To hide sensitive information in a screenshot, cover each private detail with a fully opaque mark, save or export an edited copy, then open that exact copy and inspect it before sharing. Keep the unedited original private. If the file is a PDF rather than an image, use a PDF redaction tool that applies redactions; drawing a box over page content is not the same thing.
Choose the right approach for the file
A screenshot image and a PDF need different treatment. For a raster image, the practical goal is to share a saved output in which the sensitive pixels are covered. For a PDF, text and other content may remain selectable or hidden beneath a drawn shape, so use the document’s actual redaction workflow.

Redact a screenshot image before sharing
- Review the entire frame. Look beyond the obvious message or account field. Check names and avatars, email addresses, browser tabs and URLs, notifications, account or order details, faces, timestamps, location clues, and the status bar. These are useful places to look, not an exhaustive or statistically ranked list.
- Crop unnecessary areas. Remove parts of the image that the recipient does not need, as long as the remaining image still provides enough context. Cropping does not protect information that remains visible.
- Cover each private detail completely. Use a solid, fully opaque shape or mark over sensitive text. Extend it slightly beyond the text edges to avoid leaving a character exposed. A translucent mark or light blur may leave clues; the reviewed guidance does not establish a universally safe blur setting.
- Save or export an edited copy. Do not rely on an unsaved annotation or assume that an overlay is final. Keep the original private if it still shows the information.
- Inspect the exact saved file. Open the exported copy at full size. Check that no text shows through, no sensitive detail was missed, and surrounding context such as tabs, notifications, names, or status-bar items is safe to share.
- Share only the checked copy. Before attaching or uploading, confirm that you selected the edited file rather than the original.
On iPhone: use Markup, then check the saved copy
Apple’s iPhone screenshot instructions describe drawing with Markup, cropping, and saving or sharing a screenshot. The page says that iOS 26 displays quick tools after capture; the exact interface can differ by iOS version. In supported apps, Markup shapes provide fill-color and opacity controls.
For sensitive text, choose a shape with a fill and set it to fully opaque before placing it over the detail. Save or export the edited image, then reopen and inspect that copy. Apple documents annotation and editing features; its cited guidance does not describe Markup as security-grade redaction.

For a PDF, apply an actual redaction
A rectangle drawn over a PDF page may change what is visible without removing the underlying text. Adobe’s redaction tutorial separates marking content for redaction from applying the redactions, and describes sanitizing hidden information. Its current tutorial identifies the feature as available in Acrobat Pro, Premium, or Studio.
Use the PDF tool’s redact-and-apply process rather than drawing a shape over the page. Consider sanitizing the document to remove hidden information such as comments, metadata, or hidden layers, then save and inspect the resulting file. Adobe’s Acrobat Help describes saving a sanitized document.

Can someone undo a screenshot blur or cover?
There is no universal recovery rule for every editing app or blur effect, and the cited sources establish no safe blur threshold. For sensitive text, prefer a fully opaque cover over blur or translucency, then verify the exported image. Do not treat an annotation as a guarantee about how every editor handles the original image or other saved data.
When repeated screenshot redaction needs a workflow
For occasional personal sharing, the save-and-inspect process is usually enough. For recurring documentation capture, Scribe says its extension supports manual screenshot redaction and Smart Blur during capture on Pro and Enterprise plans. That is the vendor’s description of its own feature, not an independent product test. Scribe states of its saved redactions: “Redaction is permanent. Once saved, it cannot be undone or removed.” This statement applies to Scribe’s feature, not to every screenshot editor.
