Unplug the phone, wipe its exterior gently, and let it dry in a well-ventilated place. Don’t charge it through a wet port, apply heat, use compressed air, or put an iPhone in rice. Drying and charging guidance varies by phone, so follow the instructions for your exact model.
What to do right away
- Disconnect power and accessories. Unplug any cable and don’t reconnect a wet cable or charge through a wet port. Charging while a connector is wet can corrode its pins; some phones also disable charging when they detect moisture. The alert and behavior depend on the model. - Wipe the outside gently. Use a clean, soft, lint-free cloth to remove water from the phone’s exterior. For an iPhone with liquid in its connector, Apple advises gently tapping the phone against your hand with the connector facing down. - Let it dry with airflow. Place the disconnected phone in a dry, well-ventilated area. A fan may help move air around a wet USB port, according to Samsung; Apple recommends leaving an iPhone in a dry area with some airflow. When is it safe to charge?
Don’t charge through a port that is still wet. There isn’t one drying interval that applies to every phone: follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model. Apple’s liquid-alert page says to wait at least 30 minutes before trying a cable; if the alert returns, continue drying with airflow, which may take up to 24 hours. Apple’s separate water-exposure guidance says to allow at least five hours before charging with a cable or connecting an accessory. These are Apple-specific instructions, not universal waiting times. What not to do
- Don’t apply external heat or compressed air. Apple warns against both. Avoid hair dryers and radiators, too; heat can harm the phone, and compressed air is not a safe shortcut. Apple Support · Associated Press consumer guidance
- Don’t put an iPhone in rice. Apple says: “Don’t put your iPhone in a bag of rice. Doing so could allow small particles of rice to damage your iPhone.” This warning is specifically about iPhones; use your phone maker’s instructions for other devices. Apple Support
- Don’t push objects into an iPhone connector. Apple says not to insert a foreign object such as a cotton swab or paper towel. Port-cleaning instructions differ by device, so don’t apply another maker’s advice to your phone without checking its model-specific guidance. Apple Support
- Don’t assume water resistance makes charging safe. Water-resistance ratings and permitted exposure vary by model. Apple lists model-specific limits and still advises disconnecting cables and waiting for complete drying after liquid exposure. Check your exact model’s instructions. If the phone got wet with something other than rain
Rain is fresh water, but spills, seawater, pool water, and other liquids may require different handling. Samsung’s US support page says that if liquid other than fresh water gets into a Samsung phone’s charging port, rinse the port with fresh water and dry it thoroughly with a soft cloth. This is Samsung-specific advice; check the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact phone before trying it. Samsung support

When to contact support
Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider if a liquid warning keeps returning, the phone still won’t charge after it has fully dried, or it malfunctions. Apple says a recurring liquid alert may require service; Samsung advises contacting support or visiting a service centre if its steps don’t resolve the issue. Apple Support · Samsung Support
