There is no universal gear-oil change interval. Check the maintenance schedule for your exact vehicle, drivetrain and market: it may list manual-transmission fluid, transfer-case oil and differential oil separately, and may call for inspection rather than replacement under ordinary use. If your manual specifies a severe-use schedule and your driving matches its definition, use that schedule instead.
First identify which fluid the schedule means
“Gear oil” can refer to lubricant in a manual transmission, transfer case or differential. These are distinct components with separate service entries and potentially different fluids. Automatic transmissions may use a specified transmission fluid rather than conventional hypoid gear oil, so do not assume that one drivetrain-fluid interval—or one product—applies to everything.

Find the maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual for your vehicle’s model year and market. Match the entry to the component and drivetrain, then note whether it says inspect or replace. An inspection entry is not a replacement interval.

Intervals depend on the vehicle, component and driving conditions. Manufacturer schedules can also distinguish normal use from severe use. The examples below illustrate how much those instructions can vary; they are not recommendations for other vehicles.
#1 Best Overall
- FlexFill squeezable pouch releases 2X more fluid with less effort for 3X faster filling vs. traditional bottle packaging
- Contains limited slip for optimal performance of the clutch pack, while also delivering 30% better protection against towing and heavy loads and 1.5X better gear wear protection
- Advanced full synthetic helps prevent noise and reduce chattering, while protecting gear teeth from wearing out prematurely
- High and low temperature protection ranges from -50F to 300F degrees for cold temperature fluidity and high temperature performance
- Fights rust and corrosion with corrosion inhibitors and safeguards against impurities, oxidation and thermal breakdown
| Vehicle and schedule | Component or fluid | Manufacturer’s listed service |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 Hyundai, relevant configuration, severe-use schedule | AWD transfer-case oil and rear differential oil | Replace every 72,000 miles (120,000 km). The same schedule gives different intervals for automatic- and dual-clutch-transmission fluid. Hyundai schedule |
| 2025 Kia, US market, severe-use schedule | AWD transfer-case and rear differential oil | Replace every 72,000 miles (117,000 km). The manual distinguishes inspection entries from replacement entries. Kia US schedule |
| 2025 Kia, Canada market, severe-use schedule | AWD transfer-case and rear differential oil | Listed every 117,000 km. This is a separate market and model example, not a universal interval. Kia Canada schedule |
| 2026 Hyundai, severe-use schedule | Intelligent variable transmission and dual-clutch transmission fluid | Listed at 60,000 miles and 80,000 miles, respectively. These are transmission-fluid examples, not a general gear-oil interval. Hyundai schedule |
Use a figure only when the vehicle, market, drivetrain component and use category match the manual you are consulting. Do not combine an inspection entry for one vehicle with a severe-use replacement interval for another.
When to use the severe-use schedule
Use the manufacturer’s own definition of severe driving; it varies by manual. Examples listed in the reviewed schedules include repeated short trips, rough or unpaved roads, dusty or muddy conditions, salt-spread roads, heavy traffic, mountain driving, towing or camping, and frequent high-speed or rapid-acceleration driving. If your driving fits the manual’s criteria, follow its severe-use table rather than the ordinary-use schedule.

What if the manual says “no service required”?
That wording does not establish that the fluid can never need attention, but it also does not provide a preventive replacement interval. Do not invent one. Follow the vehicle-specific manufacturer guidance, including any inspection instructions or conditions that call for service. If the manual’s wording is unclear for your vehicle, ask a dealer or qualified mechanic to interpret the schedule for its exact model and drivetrain.

Choose fluid by specification, not just viscosity
Use the specification stated for the exact component in your owner’s manual. Viscosity alone is not enough to establish compatibility. For example, a 2026 Hyundai manual specifies hypoid gear oil API GL-5, SAE 75W/85 for its AWD rear differential; that specification applies only where the vehicle’s own manual calls for it. See Hyundai’s recommended lubricants and capacities.

- Extreme pressure additives deliver outstanding high pressure performance, load carrying capacity and durability for towing and hauling
- Daily protection gear lubricant helps prevent noise and chattering, while protecting gear teeth from wearing out prematurely
- Exceptional high and low temperature protection ranges from -15F to 410F for dependable year-round coverage
- Fights rust and corrosion with corrosion inhibitors and safeguards against impurities, oxidation and thermal breakdown
- Meets or exceeds API Services GL-5 and non-synchronized manual transmissions calling for GL-4
Before buying fluid or arranging service, verify the vehicle’s model year, market, drivetrain, component and required specification. A label such as “75W-85 GL-5 gear oil” is useful only if it matches the manual’s requirement.
