Yes—but not every Nintendo Switch game supports cloud saves. Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud backs up compatible games for each Nintendo Account user, then lets that same account download the backup to another Switch-family console. You need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and an internet connection. Compatibility is decided title by title: several major games, including Animal Crossing: New Horizons and multiple Pokémon releases, are excluded from the ordinary service.
What Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud actually stores
Save Data Cloud copies a compatible game’s save data from the console’s internal storage to Nintendo-managed servers. The backup belongs to a specific Nintendo Account user and a specific software title; it is not a single pool shared by everyone who uses the console.

Nintendo says one backup can be stored per Nintendo Account for each software title. An account linked to multiple console users still has only one cloud copy for that account and that game. Nintendo does not state a limit on total backup capacity or on the number of supported software titles you can back up.

Save data is kept in the console’s internal storage. It is not stored on the game card or microSD card, so inserting a physical cartridge or moving a microSD card to another console does not move your progress and is not a substitute for a cloud backup.

Membership, account and expiry rules
You need Nintendo Switch Online
Only users whose Nintendo Accounts have an active Nintendo Switch Online membership can back up save data. The console also needs internet access to upload or download a backup. A game can work offline after its save has been created, but cloud operations require the connection and membership.
The backup follows the Nintendo Account
To restore a save on another console, sign in with the same Nintendo Account that created the backup. Nintendo does not merge saves from different users, and save data cannot be shared with another user. If two people played the same game under separate accounts, each account has its own save and its own cloud eligibility.
What happens when membership ends
When Nintendo Switch Online expires, Nintendo says the server backup cannot be used. Nintendo also says the backup becomes available again if you rejoin within 180 days. Treat that period as a recovery window, not as permanent storage: renew the membership before relying on an old backup, and download the data to a console as soon as access returns.
How automatic backups work
Automatic Save Data Cloud backup is enabled by default in Nintendo’s documented Switch workflow. The console can upload while it is sleeping or after you close the game. If you are playing a game that communicates over the internet, backup pauses during play; the upload can resume after you stop playing and the console has a connection.
Because a cloud copy is a snapshot, it may not contain the very latest moments of a session until the upload finishes. Before changing consoles, leave the game, connect the console to the internet and allow the backup to complete.

Back up or download a save manually
Manual controls are available separately for each title. Use these steps on the console containing the save you want to protect:
- Open the HOME Menu and highlight the game.
- Press the + button to open Options.
- Select Save Data Cloud.
- Choose the relevant user, then select the command to back up the save data.
To retrieve a backup on a console, follow the same HOME Menu path—highlight the game, press +, choose Save Data Cloud—and select the download command for the user whose account owns the backup.
Important overwrite warning
A manual backup replaces the server copy. Nintendo says that overwrite cannot be undone. If you use more than one console, first open the game on each device and determine which one has the intended progress. Backing up the wrong console can replace the better cloud snapshot.
Move a save to another Switch console
For a title that supports Save Data Cloud, the practical sequence is:
- On the original console, connect to the internet, close the game and confirm that the correct user is selected.
- Open HOME > game > + (Options) > Save Data Cloud and perform a manual backup if you need a current snapshot.
- On the destination console, link the same Nintendo Account. Do not create a different local user and expect Nintendo to combine the data.
- Install or insert the game, open its Save Data Cloud menu from the HOME Menu and download the backup for that account.
- Launch the game and verify the progress before deleting or resetting the original console.
This process downloads the one cloud copy for that account and software. It does not merge newer progress on the destination with older progress on the server, and it does not create a shared save that other users can access.

Games excluded from ordinary Save Data Cloud
Nintendo’s official Save Data Cloud page lists the following Nintendo and Pokémon software as unsupported as of July 30, 2026:
- 1-2-Switch
- Splatoon 2
- Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu!
- Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!
- Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons, including its Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
- Pokémon Café Mix
- Pokémon UNITE
- Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl
- Pokémon Legends: Arceus
- Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet
- Pokémon Legends: Z-A, including its Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
- Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen
The list is a compatibility statement, not a prediction about a game’s online features. Nintendo specifically warns that software supporting online play can still be unsupported for Save Data Cloud.
Check an unlisted game before you rely on it
On a connected console, highlight the title in the HOME Menu, press +, and look for Save Data Cloud. Nintendo also shows compatibility in the game’s Nintendo eShop product details. If the option is absent or the title is marked unsupported, do not assume that an online subscription or online multiplayer mode provides a backup.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons uses a separate island system
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the important exception. It is excluded from ordinary user-based Save Data Cloud, including the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, but Nintendo provides a separate island backup and restore service.
Enable the island backup
Enable the backup from inside the game while the console is connected to the internet and the player has Nintendo Switch Online. Island data is shared by the residents on that console, including residents whose individual users are not Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. That makes the method island-wide rather than a separate cloud slot for each resident.

Restore after loss or damage
If the console is lost or damaged, Nintendo’s process requires contacting Nintendo Support. The player cannot freely choose an earlier restore point. This is different from standard Save Data Cloud, where the account holder initiates a per-title download from the HOME Menu.
Replacing a console
Nintendo says Animal Crossing: New Horizons cannot use the ordinary user-transfer or save-data-transfer tools when replacing a console. Use the game’s island-transfer service instead; attempting a normal user or save transfer is not the supported route for the island.

| Question | Compatible software with Save Data Cloud | Animal Crossing: New Horizons | Titles excluded without a stated replacement |
|---|---|---|---|
| What is protected? | One save backup for one Nintendo Account user and one software title | One island shared by that console’s residents | No ordinary Save Data Cloud backup |
| Membership needed? | Active Nintendo Switch Online membership and internet access | Nintendo Switch Online and an enabled in-game island backup | Ordinary cloud service is unavailable |
| Who can use the data? | The same Nintendo Account that created the backup | Residents of the backed-up island, including residents whose users are not subscribed | No user-based cloud restore through this service |
| How is it restored? | Per-title download from HOME Menu > + (Options) > Save Data Cloud | Use Nintendo’s island-transfer or support-assisted restore process | Use only a title-specific method if Nintendo or the publisher provides one |
| Can the player choose a restore point? | The available server copy is downloaded; a manual backup replaces the prior copy | Nintendo Support handles a lost-or-damaged-console restore; the player cannot arbitrarily select a point | Not stated by Nintendo’s ordinary cloud service |
Common problems and the safest response
The Save Data Cloud option is missing
- Confirm that the highlighted title is the exact software release you intend to use; compatibility is title-specific.
- Check that the selected local user is linked to a Nintendo Account with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Connect the console to the internet and check the game’s Nintendo eShop product details.
- If the title is on Nintendo’s exclusion list, ordinary cloud saving is not available; look for a documented game-specific transfer or backup feature instead.
The downloaded save is not the progress you expected
You may have backed up the wrong console, user or moment in the game. A manual backup overwrites the server copy and cannot be undone, so compare the consoles before uploading again. Verify the Nintendo Account on the destination before downloading.
You moved the game card or microSD card
That does not move save data. Save data resides in internal console storage, so use Save Data Cloud for a supported title or the title’s own transfer system when one exists.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Your membership expired
The server backup is unavailable while the membership is expired. Rejoin within Nintendo’s stated 180-day period to regain access, then download the save to a console. If more than 180 days have passed, Nintendo’s stated recovery window has elapsed.
A practical pre-switch checklist
- Identify every game you plan to move and check Save Data Cloud compatibility individually.
- For supported games, launch the title on the console with the best progress, close it, connect to the internet and perform a manual backup.
- Confirm the destination user is linked to the identical Nintendo Account.
- Download and test each save before wiping, selling or sending away the original console.
- For Animal Crossing: New Horizons, enable island backup and follow Nintendo’s island-transfer or support instructions rather than the ordinary save-transfer tools.
- Keep Nintendo Switch Online active, or remember the 180-day rejoin window if the membership ends.
The key distinction
Nintendo Switch Online cloud saving is an account-and-title service, not a universal copy of every save on a console. Compatible games get one server snapshot per Nintendo Account user, while excluded games need another documented method—or have no Nintendo cloud recovery at all. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is handled separately as a shared island, and its lost-console restoration can require Nintendo Support.
