How Nintendo Switch eShop Sales, Gold Points, and Vouchers Work (2026 Rules)

Here is the current answer: Nintendo Switch eShop discounts depend on the specific game, your account region, and which payment options its purchase page offers. Nintendo no longer awards Gold Points for digital purchases (the change took effect March 24, 2025), although existing points can be spent until they expire. Nintendo Switch Game Voucher sales ended January 30, 2026; vouchers bought by that deadline remain redeemable for 12 months after purchase. Before paying, compare the live sale price, any expiring Gold Points, and the effective cost of using a remaining voucher.

What changed in Nintendo’s digital discounts

Switch owners now deal with three different discount mechanisms rather than one unified rewards program:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • eShop sales: temporary price reductions on selected games or downloadable content (DLC). Availability, price and dates vary by country, currency, publisher and promotion.
  • Gold Points: an existing balance that can still reduce the price of eligible digital purchases, but cannot be earned from digital-content purchases made from 9:30 PM PDT on March 24, 2025 onward.
  • Game Vouchers: prepaid two-voucher sets that are no longer sold. Sets purchased no later than 11:59 PM Pacific Time on January 30, 2026 remain usable for 12 months from their purchase date.

These options are title-specific. Open the game’s live Nintendo eShop page, because that page determines whether the title can be bought directly, pre-ordered, paid for with Gold Points, or redeemed with a voucher.

How a Nintendo Switch eShop sale works

The price and dates are regional

A sale is a temporary offer displayed on the title’s eShop page. The same game can have a different discount, start date, end date or regular price in another country. Your account’s currency and Nintendo’s local storefront determine the amount you see. A publisher can also run a promotion in one region without running it elsewhere.

#1 Best Overall

Do not rely on an old screenshot, a price shown on another country’s store or a remembered promotion. Check the current price and the promotion’s end time after signing in to the account that will make the purchase.

The purchase page controls the available route

Nintendo’s purchase flow presents different buttons depending on release status and eligibility:

  • A released title may offer a normal direct download.
  • An unreleased title may offer a pre-order instead of an immediate download.
  • A title in the Game Voucher catalog may show a voucher-redemption option, provided your account has an eligible, unexpired voucher and an active paid Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  • For eligible digital content, the checkout screen can offer Gold Points as a partial payment method.

If a button is missing, that is normally an eligibility or availability rule, not a checkout error. A sale price also does not guarantee that a voucher can be used for the same game.

What a sale price does—and does not—change

A sale lowers the cash price shown for the title during the promotion window. It does not extend a Gold Point or voucher expiration date. The sale may also change the value calculation for a voucher: spending a voucher on a game that is currently much cheaper can provide less value than paying cash and saving the voucher for another eligible title.

Gold Points: the rules in force now

Digital purchases no longer earn points

Nintendo states that, as of 9:30 PM PDT on March 24, 2025, it is no longer possible to earn My Nintendo Gold Points when purchasing digital content. The older policy that described earning 5% of an eligible digital game or DLC purchase is historical context only; it does not apply to current digital purchases.

That change does not erase points already in your account. A balance earned before the cutoff can still be redeemed for eligible digital games and DLC while it remains valid.

  • This item can be redeemed on eShop only. This item cannot be redeemed on the Wii Shop
  • The perfect gift for anyone who loves to play—including you. Choose from over 1,000 new, classic and indie games – delivered directly to your Nintendo Switch, Wii U or Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
  • Nintendo eShop Digital Cards are redeemable only through the Nintendo eShop on the Nintendo Switch, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
  • Digital Card balances can be shared across Nintendo Switch, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family of systems, but may only be used on a single Nintendo eShop account.

What Gold Points can pay for

At checkout, select the number of available points you want to apply. The remaining balance is paid with Nintendo eShop funds or another payment method offered in your region. Eligible uses can include digital games, DLC and, where Nintendo makes the option available, a Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Gold Points cannot be used for the following categories:

  • Membership passes or similar pass products
  • Automatic renewals
  • In-game items
  • Virtual currency

Eligibility is checked per product. A game’s page or checkout screen is the authoritative indication that points can be applied.

Expiration is tied to the earning month

Points expire on the last day of the month that falls 12 months after they were earned. Nintendo’s example is points earned on March 24, 2026, which expire on March 31, 2027. Different batches can therefore have different expiration dates.

Check the points balance and expiration information in your Nintendo Account before starting a purchase. If several batches are available, use the ones that expire first rather than assuming the checkout system will preserve a preferred batch.

Region and account restrictions

Gold Points are limited to the currency region in which they were earned. They cannot be transferred to another Nintendo Account or exchanged for cash. Changing your account country to a different currency can make the points unavailable in that storefront; changing back does not turn them into a transferable balance.

Applying points during a sale

  1. Open the game or DLC’s eShop page and confirm that the current sale price is shown for your account region.
  2. Select the purchase option and continue to checkout.
  3. Choose Gold Points as a payment method if the product is eligible.
  4. Enter the number of points to use. The checkout total should show the points’ reduction and the remaining amount.
  5. Pay the balance with eShop funds or another available method, then review the final total before confirming.

Because points reduce the eligible purchase balance directly, they can be useful on a sale. The practical question is whether to spend an expiring balance now or preserve it for an eligible title that is not discounted.

Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers: availability and mechanics

New voucher sets cannot be purchased

Nintendo ended Game Voucher sales at 11:59 PM Pacific Time on January 30, 2026. The purchase option is therefore unavailable now. Any set bought by that deadline remains valid for 12 months from the date it was purchased, so the last redemption date depends on the individual transaction.

Requirements for redeeming a voucher

  • One voucher covers one eligible digital game from Nintendo’s voucher catalog.
  • The Nintendo Account that bought the set must be the account redeeming it; vouchers cannot be transferred.
  • An active, paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required at the time of redemption. A free trial or an expired membership does not satisfy that requirement.
  • Redemption must occur in the region where the voucher was purchased.
  • Vouchers cannot be used for Switch 2-exclusive games.

Vouchers have no cash value and cannot be returned. The eligible catalog, platform designation and account-region match should all be checked before you commit one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expiration and which voucher is consumed

Each voucher expires 12 months after the set’s purchase date. When more than one unredeemed voucher is present, Nintendo uses the voucher that expires soonest first. If you are planning to buy a game near an expiration date, verify the exact date in your account rather than relying on the month of purchase.

Vouchers generally do not stack with promotions

Nintendo says voucher redemptions may not be combined with another sale or promotion unless Nintendo specifically allows it. In practice, redeeming a voucher normally means giving up the cash-sale price shown for that title. A game that is temporarily discounted can therefore be a poor voucher choice even when it appears in the eligible catalog.

How to compare the three payment choices

Use the live cash price first, then account for what each option costs or risks. The following comparison keeps the relevant limits together.

Option Can you obtain it now? Expiration Eligibility and restrictions How value is determined
eShop sale Yes, while the regional promotion is live Promotion end date shown on the title page Only selected titles; price and dates vary by country, currency, publisher and promotion Pay the reduced cash price; compare it with points or a voucher before checkout
Existing Gold Points Only from a balance earned before March 24, 2025 for digital purchases Last day of the month 12 months after earning Eligible games, DLC and some memberships; not passes, auto-renewals, in-game items or virtual currency; currency-region limited Points reduce the eligible checkout balance; the remainder is paid normally
Game Voucher No new purchases after January 30, 2026; previously purchased sets remain 12 months after the set’s purchase date One eligible digital game per voucher; active paid Nintendo Switch Online required; purchaser’s account and purchase region; no Switch 2-exclusive games Compare the pair’s purchase price with the regular prices of two eligible games; sales usually cannot be combined

The voucher break-even test

A voucher pair is financially advantageous only when both vouchers are redeemed for eligible games whose combined regular prices exceed the price paid for the pair. This is a two-game calculation, not a promise that every individual redemption is cheaper than buying cash.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before redeeming, write down the current cash prices of two games you genuinely intend to play. If either game is on sale, compare the pair’s current cash total with the voucher-pair price. Paying cash during a deep sale and reserving the voucher for a full-price eligible game can produce more value. If a voucher is close to expiring, include the value of losing it in your decision rather than assuming it can be extended.

Step-by-step buying decisions

When the game is on sale

  1. Open the title page in your account’s eShop region.
  2. Record the sale price and the promotion’s end date.
  3. Check whether Gold Points can be applied and whether your points expire soon.
  4. If you own a legacy voucher, compare the sale price with the voucher’s effective cost before selecting a payment route.
  5. Complete checkout using the option with the lower effective cost that still fits your expiration and eligibility constraints.

When using Gold Points

  1. Confirm the product is a qualifying digital game, DLC item or other supported purchase.
  2. At checkout, select Gold Points and choose the amount to redeem.
  3. Verify the remaining cash balance, then pay it with eShop funds or another offered method.
  4. Save the receipt or transaction record if you are tracking several expiration dates.

When using a Game Voucher

  1. Confirm that the account has an unexpired voucher and an active paid Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  2. Check that the game is in the eligible catalog, is not Switch 2-exclusive, and belongs to the voucher’s purchase region.
  3. Compare the title’s current cash price with the value you expect from saving the voucher for another eligible game.
  4. Select the voucher-redemption option on the title page and review which voucher will be consumed.
  5. Confirm the redemption before the voucher’s individual expiration date.

Adding funds with an eShop gift card

Nintendo’s published materials list eShop card denominations of €15, €25 and €50. Those denominations do not guarantee availability in every country. Check the card’s denomination, delivery type, currency and regional compatibility before buying; an eShop card issued for one currency region generally cannot be applied to an account using another.

After adding funds, the balance can cover a sale price or the cash remainder left after applying Gold Points. Funding the account does not revive expired points or extend a voucher.

Common problems and what to check

The voucher option is missing

  • The game may not be in the eligible catalog.
  • Your Nintendo Switch Online membership may be inactive or unpaid.
  • The voucher or account may belong to a different purchase region.
  • The title may be a Switch 2-exclusive game.
  • The voucher set may have passed its 12-month expiration date.

Gold Points are not shown at checkout

  • The product may be an excluded category such as a pass, auto-renewal, in-game item or virtual currency.
  • The points may have expired, or the account storefront may use a different currency region.
  • You may be checking a purchase made after the March 24, 2025 digital-earning cutoff and expecting new points that cannot be awarded.

The sale price looks better than the voucher

That is possible and expected. A voucher is not an automatic discount on every eligible game. Compare the current cash price, the voucher-pair cost and the regular price of another game you could redeem before the voucher expires. Redeem only after that comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical checklist before confirming payment

  • Is the displayed price from your own country and currency?
  • What is the promotion’s end date?
  • Is the game released, pre-orderable or voucher-eligible?
  • Can Gold Points be applied, and when does the oldest batch expire?
  • If using a voucher, is the membership active, is the game in the catalog, and does the voucher’s 12-month window remain open?
  • For a voucher pair, do the two intended games’ regular prices exceed what the pair cost?
  • Will a regional account change make your points or voucher unavailable?

The safest choice is the one that uses an eligible balance before it expires while preserving the larger discount for a title that is not already cheaper in a live sale.
