How Nintendo Switch 2 Compatibility and Upgrade Packs Work for Original Switch Indie Games

Most original Nintendo Switch indie games can be played on Nintendo Switch 2, but compatibility is not universal. Nintendo identifies some titles as unsupported or only partially compatible, so check the individual game’s compatibility entry before relying on it. If a compatible game has a Switch 2 upgrade, you normally keep your existing physical card or digital license and buy (or, for selected titles, claim) an upgrade pack rather than buying the original game again.

A Switch 2 Edition bundles the original Switch game with its game-specific upgrade pack. The pack may improve resolution or frame rate, add modes or features, or enable capabilities such as GameShare. Those enhancements run only on Switch 2; the original version remains playable on an original Switch.

What happens to an original Switch indie game on Switch 2?

Nintendo Switch 2 is compatible with many Nintendo Switch products and features, and compatible physical and digital games can be used on the newer console. “Many” is important: Nintendo also lists games that are unsupported or playable only with noted issues. There is no rule that every indie game works perfectly, and there is no single compatibility result for the entire indie category.

For a specific game, use Nintendo’s title-level compatibility listing and the current regional store page. A game can fall into one of three practical categories:

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Compatibility result What you can expect What to verify
Fully playable The original game starts and plays on Switch 2 as listed. Whether a separate enhancement, patch or upgrade pack exists.
Playable with noted issues The game runs, but Nintendo documents a limitation, changed behavior or required condition. The exact issue, the required system or game update, and whether your play style is affected.
Unsupported The title is not expected to run on Switch 2. Do not buy an upgrade on the assumption that the original software will work.

Compatibility status can depend on the title, software version, accessories or a publisher’s implementation. Treat the game’s own listing as authoritative rather than inferring support from another indie game.

What is a Switch 2 Edition and what is an upgrade pack?

Nintendo defines a Switch 2 Edition as a bundle containing the original Nintendo Switch game and its upgrade pack. The upgrade pack is a title-specific add-on that adapts the game for Switch 2. Depending on the publisher, it can improve image quality or performance, add new modes or features, or use Switch 2 capabilities that are unavailable in the original version.

An upgrade pack is not a universal Switch 2 license. It exists only when a publisher creates one for a particular game, and the contents differ by title. Some publishers deliver enhancements as a free game update instead; others sell a paid upgrade pack, release a separate native Switch 2 game, or announce no enhanced version. Do not assume that an update called “Switch 2 Edition” has the same scope or price as another title’s update.

Enhancements can be technical or substantial

  • Technical improvements: higher resolution, steadier or higher frame rates, faster loading, or visual settings tuned for Switch 2.
  • Content additions: new modes, features, challenges or other game content supplied by the publisher.
  • System-specific functions: features such as GameShare when the title supports them.

The store description should identify which benefits are included. A performance improvement is not evidence that new content is included, and a new mode is not evidence that every visual setting was upgraded.

Do you have to buy an original game again?

Usually, no. If you own a compatible physical game card or digital copy, you can purchase an upgrade pack where one is offered. Nintendo lists Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store and participating retailers as purchase channels. A retailer may provide a download code that you redeem in the eShop; that code is an access method for the pack, not necessarily a second copy of the base game.

Your ownership format determines how you access the original software:

What you own Typical access to the original game Upgrade action
Physical Switch game card Insert the card in Switch 2 whenever Nintendo lists the game as compatible. Buy or redeem the game’s upgrade pack, if available; keep the card available when the game requires it.
Digital Switch license Use the Nintendo Account that purchased the game and redownload it on Switch 2 as allowed by Nintendo’s transfer and account rules. Purchase or claim the matching upgrade pack on that account.
Physical Switch 2 Edition package The package may include the original game and upgrade pack on one card. Follow the package instructions; some publishers instead include a download code.

Prices are title- and region-specific. Nintendo’s official material used for this guide does not establish a universal price, a universal discount or a recurring fee. Check the current store listing for your country before paying.

When is an upgrade pack free?

Selected upgrade packs are included at no additional cost for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members. This is a title-specific benefit, not a blanket entitlement for every Switch game. You must also own the original game that the pack upgrades. Membership alone does not grant all Switch 2 enhancements.

For an eligible game, open its eShop listing while signed in to the Nintendo Account with the qualifying membership and ownership. Confirm that the page identifies the correct upgrade pack and shows the member benefit before downloading. If the pack is not listed as included, the game may be outside the selected catalog, your membership may not qualify, or the account may not own the base game.

What remains playable on the original Switch?

Buying an upgrade pack does not remove the original version. The base Switch game remains playable on Nintendo Switch, subject to the game’s existing requirements. The enhancement content is designed for Switch 2 and does not run on the original console.

Nintendo Switch 2 System with Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 Bundle
  • The next evolution of the Nintendo Switch system
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Supports up to 4K resolution** when using a compatible game and TV connected via the included Nintendo Switch 2 dock
  • Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.***

This creates two practical versions tied to one purchase:

  • On an original Switch, you continue using the standard Switch software.
  • On Switch 2, the console can run the compatible base game and, after the upgrade is installed or redeemed, its Switch 2 enhancements.

If a publisher releases a separate Switch 2 game instead of an upgrade pack, ownership and save behavior can follow different rules. Read that game’s listing rather than treating it as an upgrade-pack transaction.

How physical Switch 2 Edition packaging works

Nintendo says a physical Switch 2 Edition can place the original game and its upgrade pack on one card. That is the simplest case: insert the card into Switch 2 and follow any on-screen update instructions.

Packaging is not identical across publishers. Some boxes contain a physical card plus a download code for the upgrade content. In that case, the card supplies the original software and the code must be redeemed through the Nintendo eShop. Check the box, the included insert and the product page before assuming all content is on the card.

A download-code package can also have regional restrictions or a redemption deadline set by the publisher or retailer. Redeem it with the Nintendo Account and store region that the product specifies, and retain the code receipt until the content appears in your software library.

What this means specifically for indie games

There is no blanket indie-game policy. Each indie publisher decides whether to issue a free update, a paid upgrade pack, a separate Switch 2 release, a bundled Switch 2 Edition or no enhanced release. Nintendo’s compatibility result and the publisher’s product page answer different questions: the first tells you whether the existing Switch software runs, while the second describes optional enhancements and their access method.

For every indie title you own, check these points in order:

  1. Search Nintendo’s compatibility guidance for the exact game name and edition.
  2. Confirm whether your physical card or digital version matches the listed title; similarly named editions can have different products.
  3. Look for a Switch 2 Edition, upgrade-pack listing or free-update notice from the publisher.
  4. Compare the listed enhancement scope with what you actually want, such as smoother performance versus new content.
  5. Check the price, membership eligibility and regional availability in your own storefront.
  6. Read the publisher’s save-transfer or import instructions before starting on Switch 2.

Documented example: Stardew Valley

Nintendo lists Stardew Valley: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition with a December 25, 2025 release date. Nintendo also lists a separate Stardew Valley Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack, demonstrating the upgrade-pack path for an indie game.

The listing includes GameShare support: when one player owns the copy, that player can invite up to three friends under the feature’s stated conditions. GameShare is a concrete example of an added capability, not a promise that every Switch 2 Edition supports multiplayer sharing or adds new modes.

Stardew Valley shows why checking the individual listing matters. Its edition and pack are documented products; another indie game may have only a free update, a paid pack with different content, a separate Switch 2 release or no announced enhancement.

Will your saves and cartridges carry over?

Physical cards can be inserted into Switch 2 when Nintendo lists the title as compatible. The card identifies the game; it does not by itself guarantee that every save or enhancement transfers automatically.

Nintendo’s transfer guidance says digital games, certain save data and settings can move from Switch to Switch 2. The available transfer method and the data that qualifies depend on Nintendo’s system process and your account setup. A particular indie game may additionally require an in-game export, import or account link.

Before switching consoles, identify which of these applies to your game:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • System transfer: the save moves with Nintendo’s console-transfer process.
  • Cloud or account transfer: the game uses the save service and account associated with your software.
  • Title-specific import: the publisher requires an in-game export file, menu command or one-time import.
  • No supported transfer: the publisher or Nintendo documents a limitation for that title.

Do not delete the original console’s save until the game loads correctly on Switch 2. If the publisher provides a separate import step, perform it before beginning a new Switch 2 save that could overwrite or complicate the transfer.

A safe upgrade procedure

  1. Record ownership. Note whether you own a card or a digital license, and which Nintendo Account purchased the digital copy.
  2. Check compatibility. Search Nintendo’s title-specific listing and read any partial-compatibility notes.
  3. Update first. Install the latest available system and game updates while the original save remains backed up or otherwise recoverable.
  4. Verify the upgrade route. On the game’s eShop page, distinguish a free update, a paid upgrade pack, a membership inclusion and a separate Switch 2 game.
  5. Confirm the region. Prices, availability and redemption rules can differ by regional storefront.
  6. Transfer or import saves. Use Nintendo’s system process or the publisher’s documented in-game method.
  7. Install the enhancement. Redeem a retailer code if supplied, or download the pack from the eShop with the owning account.
  8. Test before erasing anything. Launch the upgraded game, open your save, and test the advertised feature before removing the original console’s data.

Common problems and fixes

The game launches but the upgrade is missing

Confirm that the installed base game and the pack are the same title and region, then check the eShop’s redownload or downloadable-content section while signed in to the purchasing account. A physical-card package may require code redemption even though the card is inserted.

The eShop asks you to buy the full game

You may be viewing a separate Switch 2 release rather than the upgrade pack, or the console may be using a Nintendo Account that does not own the original digital license. Recheck the product name, account and ownership format before purchasing.

The game runs with visual or control issues

Read Nintendo’s compatibility note for the title. If it is listed as partially compatible, the observed behavior may be documented rather than fixed by buying an upgrade. Install current patches and follow any publisher-specific instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The save is not visible

Verify that the transfer completed for the correct user profile and that the game’s edition supports the save you moved. Look for a publisher-provided import command; do not overwrite the original save until the import succeeds.

A download code will not redeem

Check the code’s region, expiration or redemption conditions and use the Nintendo Account associated with the intended copy. Contact the retailer or publisher for a code-specific failure rather than buying the pack again.

How to compare indie games before spending money

Decision axis Questions to ask Why it matters
Compatibility status Fully playable, playable with issues, or unsupported? Determines whether the original software is usable at all.
Upgrade route Free update, free or paid pack, separate Switch 2 release, or none? Changes what you must download, buy or keep.
Ownership format Card, digital license, or package with a code? Determines how the base game and enhancement are accessed.
Enhancement scope Resolution and frame-rate changes, new content, or GameShare? Lets you judge whether the cost delivers a meaningful benefit.
Save handling Automatic system transfer, cloud process, or title-specific import? Prevents loss of progress during the move.
Cost and access What is the current regional price, and does Expansion Pack membership include it? Prices and eligibility are not universal.

No universal upgrade-pack price or market-wide availability figure has been established. Use the live regional listing at the time you buy, because publishers can change availability and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack eligibility is title-specific.

Bottom line for original Switch indie owners

Start with compatibility, not the upgrade price. A compatible original card or digital license generally remains usable on Switch 2, and an upgrade pack—when the publisher offers one—adds game-specific enhancements without requiring another purchase of the base game. Selected packs are included for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members who own the original title, while other packs are paid or unavailable. Verify the exact listing, region, packaging, enhancement scope and save-transfer method for each indie game, then keep the original console data until the Switch 2 version is confirmed working.
