When a newspaper press plant closes, the paper usually does not disappear: its finished page files are transmitted to another compatible plant, printed overnight on a web-offset press, bundled, trucked through a wholesale or distribution network, and delivered by carriers, the postal service or newspaper partners. The production address changes; the masthead, newsroom and subscription relationship can remain the same. What most often changes is the timetable, because a more distant plant leaves less time for late print edits and overnight delivery.
What a press-plant closure changes—and what it does not
A closure is primarily a relocation of manufacturing. Editors and designers can continue producing the same edition, but the digital page files leave the usual pressroom and travel electronically to a receiving plant. That plant must have the right web-offset equipment, plate-making workflow, page-format and color capabilities, available press time, trained staff and a transport route that fits the publication’s delivery territory.

Printing may stay within the publisher’s corporate network or be outsourced to another publisher or commercial printer. The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre describes both arrangements: printing can be done in the publisher’s own plant or outsourced to another publisher or printer. After printing, copies move to a wholesaler or distribution facility, then to stores and newsstands or to subscribers through postal and home-delivery networks.

The production chain after the old plant shuts
The replacement route is an industrial sequence with tightly timed handoffs.
1. The publisher selects a receiving plant
Operations teams map the circulation area against candidate plants. They assess press compatibility, page count and color capacity, open press slots, labor, cutoff times, trucking distance, carrier coverage and backup options. A plant that is technically suitable but too far away may miss the overnight delivery window; a nearby plant without spare capacity cannot absorb the run reliably.
Large publishers often combine owned facilities with contract sites. The New York Times Company reports printing at its College Point, New York, production and distribution facility and under contract at 20 remote print sites across the United States; its international edition is printed under contract at 22 sites worldwide. Those figures illustrate a network strategy, not a universal requirement for every newspaper.

2. Pages are transmitted and imposed
Once the newsroom closes the print edition, finalized page files are sent to the receiving plant. Prepress staff check file integrity, convert the pages into the plant’s production format and impose them in the order required by the press and folder. The same content may be prepared in several regional editions, each with its own advertising, local pages or delivery instructions.
3. Plates are made and mounted
Computer-to-plate equipment images each page onto an aluminum plate. Technicians bend or punch the plates for the specific press cylinder, mount them in sequence and verify that the page order, registration and color separations are correct. A plate problem found after the press starts can require a stoppage and threaten the truck departure time, so prepress checks are part of the deadline discipline.

4. Web-offset printing runs from newsprint rolls
Unlike sheet-fed commercial printing, a newspaper press feeds a continuous web of newsprint from large rolls through several printing units. Inked plates transfer text and images to the moving paper; color pages pass through the required units before the web enters the folder. The UK Valuation Office Agency’s 2017 guidance says newspaper presses can run at up to 60,000 copies per hour. That is a published process limit, not a promise that every modern press or every job reaches that speed.
Press crews sample copies while the run is under way. They check color balance, readable type, page order, registration, ink coverage and physical defects. If a plate, roll or color unit fails, operators may stop, correct it and restart, consuming time in a schedule that is already constrained by transport.

The continuous web is slit, cut and folded into individual newspapers. A folder can create the tabloid or broadsheet format specified for the edition and produce inserts or separate sections in the required order. Finished copies are counted and stacked for dispatch rather than left as a continuous roll.
6. Bundles are wrapped for shipment
Copies are grouped into route-sized bundles, wrapped and labeled for their next destination. Government guidance describes bundles in quires of 24; actual bundle sizes can vary with the publisher’s route plan and handling equipment. Labels identify a wholesaler, depot, store, newsstand or carrier route so that the right quantity reaches each handoff.
7. Line-haul trucks move the finished papers
Bundles leave the plant on scheduled trucks. They may go directly to a regional depot or first to a wholesaler that breaks the load into local routes. Moving production farther from the circulation area adds road miles and can consume part of the overnight window, even when the press itself runs at the same speed.

8. Local carriers complete delivery
At the final depot, bundles are sorted by route. Independent locally based distributors, newspaper partners, postal services and third-party delivery agents may deliver to homes; stores and newsstands receive separate drops. Gannett says daily distribution is typically outsourced to independent local distributors. The New York Times describes a mixture of its own drivers, newspaper agreements and third-party agents. The exact mix depends on geography, labor contracts and the publisher’s network.

There is no single industry formula that assigns universal weights to the decision. A practical comparison looks like this:
| Decision factor | Why it matters after a closure | Questions operations teams ask |
|---|---|---|
| Distance and overnight transit | Road time determines when bundles can reach depots and carriers. | Can trucks leave after the final edition and still arrive before route sorting? |
| Press compatibility and capacity | The plant must accept the page size, edition count, color work and total copy volume. | Are the required press units available on the publication’s nights, with spare capacity for peaks? |
| Labor and cutoff times | Skilled prepress and press crews turn files into plates and saleable copies. | What is the latest file handoff, and how quickly can a correction be made? |
| Delivery-carrier coverage | A plant can print successfully but still fail if the final-mile network cannot collect on time. | Do existing distributors, postal arrangements and newspaper partners serve the new route? |
| Redundancy | A second capable site or contract option limits the effect of a breakdown. | Where would an emergency run go if the primary press lost a night? |
| Total cost | Lower plant costs can be offset by longer trucking, handling and capital requirements. | What is the combined production and transport cost, not just the press rate? |
Geographic optimization can make outsourcing sensible even when a publisher owns other presses. Gannett describes using fewer pressrooms, geographic planning and outside capacity to reduce operating costs and future capital expenditure. A publisher may therefore close an underused building while preserving print through a regional contract.
Why print deadlines move earlier
The clearest reader-facing effect of a distant plant is a tighter editorial cutoff. If the former press was nearby, a late page could be transmitted, printed and trucked with relatively little slack. A farther plant needs more time for file transfer, plate production, press time and line haul. To protect delivery, the publisher may require news, sports and advertising pages to close earlier.
The Minnesota Star Tribune’s 2025 Minneapolis closure provides a documented example: printing moved to a Gannett facility in Des Moines, and earlier print-story deadlines were required to allow for shipping. That does not mean every relocation causes the same change. The Los Angeles Times moved printing from its Olympic plant to Riverside in 2024 while keeping circulation numbers the same. The Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald moved production from Doral to the South Florida Sun Sentinel’s Deerfield Beach facility in 2020 and announced that delivery times were expected to remain unchanged.

Print and digital deadlines are different clocks. A website can publish a late development after the print pages have closed, while the newspaper delivered the next morning reflects the earlier cutoff. A plant move can make that distinction more noticeable, but it does not prevent digital updates.

Changing the plant does not automatically require changing every local carrier. Publishers can redesign the line haul so that trucks meet existing depots at different times, or they can add a cross-dock where bundles are transferred from a long-distance trailer to local vehicles. If the new arrival misses a depot’s sorting window, however, a subscriber may receive the paper later even when the press run finished on schedule.
- Home subscribers: Bundles are sorted into carrier routes, then delivered by independent contractors, newspaper partners, postal workers or a combination.
- Retail outlets: Wholesalers or distributors allocate copies to stores, kiosks and newsstands according to standing orders and expected demand.
- Remote areas: Longer routes may use postal delivery or an additional depot handoff, increasing sensitivity to weather and transport delays.
- Edition changes: Regional editions can be separated at the plant or depot, so a replacement press must preserve the correct local advertising and page sequence.
A publisher may keep the same circulation count while changing the route. The Los Angeles Times example shows that a production relocation can preserve the product even though its overnight logistics are different.
Why publishers close press plants
Declining print demand
Fewer paid copies spread fixed building, maintenance and staffing costs across a smaller run. Readers shifting to online news can leave a pressroom with unused capacity on many nights.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFacility and technology economics
Press buildings require major equipment, utilities, maintenance and specialized labor. An expiring lease or a need to replace aging technology can make a contract plant cheaper than renewing or rebuilding. The Los Angeles Times cited changed technology and economics, along with an expiring lease, when it moved production.
Best Value
Network consolidation and purchased capacity
When several newspapers operate in one region, one larger plant can print multiple titles more efficiently than several underused rooms. The Miami Herald cited online readership and consolidation across its parent company. Buying unused capacity from another printer lets a publisher retain print without owning every machine.
What readers should watch for after a closure
- Earlier newsroom cutoffs: Late-breaking items may appear online first because the print file must leave earlier.
- Stable or revised arrival times: Delivery can remain unchanged when routes are redesigned, but a longer line haul may reduce buffer time.
- Edition-specific differences: Local advertising or regional pages can vary even when the masthead is unchanged.
- Occasional missed copies: A press fault, truck delay, weather event or depot error can affect one route without indicating that printing has stopped.
- Changed customer-service contacts: The subscription desk may remain the same while a separate distributor handles the final-mile complaint.
If a copy is late or missing, report the delivery date, address, edition and whether nearby subscribers were affected. That information helps the publisher distinguish a plant-wide delay from a single carrier-route problem.
Three documented relocations, three different outcomes
| Newspaper | Closure and replacement | Reported operational result |
|---|---|---|
| Minnesota Star Tribune (2025) | Minneapolis Heritage Center closed; printing moved to Des Moines. | Print-story deadlines had to move earlier to allow for shipping. |
| Los Angeles Times (2024) | Olympic plant closed; printing moved to Riverside. | Circulation numbers remained the same, showing that the product can continue after a plant relocation. |
| Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald (2020) | Doral production moved to the South Florida Sun Sentinel facility in Deerfield Beach. | Delivery times were expected to remain unchanged under the redesigned logistics plan. |
These cases are not contradictory. Distance, press capacity, truck schedules, depot windows and carrier coverage determine whether readers notice an earlier deadline, a different arrival time or neither.
The practical answer to “Where is my newspaper printed now?”
After a closure, it is printed wherever the publisher has contracted or designated a compatible receiving plant for that edition. The page files move electronically; plates and newsprint remain at the receiving site. From there, completed bundles travel by line haul to a wholesaler, distribution center or local depot before the usual delivery network takes over. The plant’s location may change, but the newspaper can still arrive through the same carrier and retain the same editorial identity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a press-plant closure mean the newspaper has stopped printing?
Not necessarily. A closure usually transfers the run to an owned regional plant or an outside printer; the print edition ends only if the publisher separately announces that decision.
Why did my paper arrive on time even though the plant moved farther away?
Publishers can alter truck departure times, depot handoffs and carrier schedules. If the new route has enough capacity and buffer, the longer trip may be absorbed without changing the subscriber’s delivery time.
Why was a late story online but not in my printed paper?
The website and print edition have different deadlines. A replacement plant may require the print file to close earlier, while the website can continue publishing after plates have been made.
