An NBA player does not automatically become a free agent—or get traded—because of a contract dispute. The route back depends first on whether his contract is still in force, then on what the player and team agree to and what the NBA’s collective bargaining and transaction rules allow.
Start with the player’s contract status
The first question is whether the player is still under contract with the team. A disagreement or holdout, by itself, does not establish that the contract ended, that the player was released, or that he became a free agent. The NBA and NBPA’s collective bargaining agreement (CBA) governs employment terms and the parties’ rights and obligations. The NBPA identifies the current agreement as effective July 1, 2023, running through the 2029-30 season, with an opt-out opportunity after 2028-29. See the NBPA’s CBA page.

That means a player who remains under contract may return to the same team by resolving the dispute and resuming the contracted relationship. The specific remedies or consequences depend on the contract, applicable CBA provisions, and the facts. The general framework alone cannot establish what a particular player owes, what discipline may apply, or what the team must accept.

What routes can lead to a return?

Free agency can involve different mechanisms, including qualifying offers, offer sheets, and sign-and-trade arrangements where the player and teams meet the relevant conditions. Those routes depend on the player’s status and CBA rules; they are not interchangeable with a negotiated return under an existing contract. Can a player simply come back after holding out?
There is no universal reinstatement procedure that applies to every dispute. If the player’s contract remains in force, returning generally means resolving matters with the team and reporting back under the existing relationship. Whether any particular terms, consequences, or formal steps apply depends on the individual contract, the CBA, and the facts. A holdout should not be described as a release unless the player was actually released or the contract otherwise ended.
Nor does a player’s preference decide the outcome by itself. A player may seek to return, leave, or negotiate different terms, but the title of the dispute does not establish that the team must grant a request or that either side has accepted a settlement.

Does a player who wants out have to be traded?
No general rule in the sources says a player must be traded simply because he asks to leave. A trade is one possible route for a player who is under contract, but it requires a valid transaction under NBA rules. If the contract ends and the player is eligible for free agency, a later signing may be another route; its availability depends on timing and eligibility.
Trade rules also limit attempts to use free agency as a workaround. The NBA says teams generally cannot sign a free agent under an agreement that he will later be traded to another team, with an exception when the free agent is signing with his own team. The league explains the restriction in NBA trade deadline explained. A player and team therefore cannot assume that a short-term signing can be arranged freely as a bridge to a different club.

Why timing and case details matter
Free-agency and trade windows affect when a route is available. The NBA’s free-agency explainer describes a July 1-6 moratorium during which teams may not sign most free agents or make trades; the applicable league calendar and rules should be checked for the relevant season because timing details can change.
For any named player, establish the contract status and the dated record before drawing conclusions. A reliable account needs case-specific reporting or primary documents showing any negotiated resolution, formal team or league action, trade, release, or free-agent signing. Without those details, it is not possible to say which route applies or what consequences followed.
