Choose a feature phone if you want fewer connected functions built in and can do without some smartphone services. Keep your smartphone and add limits if you rely on its apps and want to make distracting features harder to reach. Neither option guarantees a change in habits or well-being. The practical test is whether your essential services still work with the level of connectivity you want.
What changes when you switch?
| Choice | What it changes | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Feature phone | Reduces available connectivity and functionality by design while retaining basic phone functions. Capabilities differ substantially by model. | Less access may mean less temptation, but losing smartphone services can add friction to everyday tasks. |
| Smartphone with limits | Keeps smartphone apps and services while using controls such as app timers, usage summaries, focus modes, or notification limits. Availability varies by operating system, version, and device. | More flexible, but requires setup and ongoing choices; consider whether you can easily bypass the controls you choose. |
Start with the services you actually need
Before deciding, list the functions you use away from home or work, then mark which must be available on your phone. A feature phone may suit someone whose essentials are calls and texts. A smartphone is harder to replace if daily routines depend on mobile services.

When a feature phone is the better fit
Consider a feature phone if you want internet access and app-based distractions absent or substantially reduced by design, and your essential tasks can be done without a smartphone. It is a product category, not a guarantee of a particular feature set: check the specific model rather than assuming all feature phones work alike.

Check compatibility before buying
For any specific handset, verify supported network technology and bands, local coverage, SIM or eSIM requirements, and access to the services you need in your region. None of the sources reviewed establishes compatibility for a particular model, so there is no universally safe handset recommendation here.
Account for friction
Reduced connectivity can make some activities less convenient. If you rely on smartphone-only navigation, payments, transit, accessibility tools, or work apps, consider how you would handle them before switching.

When keeping your smartphone makes more sense
If you need smartphone apps, first check what controls your device offers and use the ones that match your goal. Apple documents Screen Time for managing a child’s iPhone or iPad, while Google documents Digital Wellbeing for Android; exact options and menus vary by device and software version. See Apple’s Screen Time guidance and Google’s Digital Wellbeing guidance.

Start with the apps or alerts that interrupt you most. If you can readily dismiss or bypass a limit, treat it as a reminder rather than a hard barrier; choose stronger restrictions if your device supports them and they fit your needs.

What evidence says about reducing connectivity
A 2025 study published in PNAS Nexus reported that a two-week intervention blocking mobile internet on participants’ smartphones improved sustained attention, mental health, and subjective well-being. The intervention retained calls and texts while blocking mobile internet, according to the PubMed record. This is evidence that restricting connectivity may help under the conditions studied; it does not show that every feature phone or every user will have the same outcome.
Screen time alone does not establish what is driving a person’s well-being. The OECD’s 2025 analysis found an association between more than two hours a day of personal screen time and a greater likelihood of reporting poorer subjective well-being, using poll data gathered in early 2025 across 14 countries. The OECD also reported that sleep deprivation, low physical activity, and financial hardship were stronger predictors, and the association does not prove cause and effect. Its brief puts the caveat plainly: “Yet, screen time alone does not tell the whole story.” Read OECD’s analysis.

Be especially careful with claims about children
Concerns and survey responses are not proof that phones cause mental-health problems. HMD reported GWI Core Q1–Q2 2024 findings that 36% of internet users aged 16–24 believed they spent too much time on social media and 28% described themselves as prone to anxiety; neither figure establishes that phone use caused anxiety. HMD also reported a July 2024 survey commissioned from Perspectus Global: among 10,092 parents surveyed in the UK, US, India, Germany, and Australia, 54% wished they had waited longer to give their child a smartphone and 65% had concerns about their child’s phone use and mental well-being. These are commissioned survey results, not clinical findings. Details are on HMD’s page.

A phone choice can be a practical household boundary, but these sources do not establish it as a treatment or prove a causal effect.
Quick Recap
A practical way to decide
- Write down your non-negotiables. Include communication, payments, travel, work or school, accessibility, and emergency needs.
- Ask whether they must be on your phone. If calls and texts cover your essentials, a feature phone may be workable. If important tasks require smartphone apps, keep the smartphone for now.
- Try built-in limits if you need the apps. Review your device’s available focus, timer, and notification controls; test whether the limits meaningfully change access for you.
- Check a particular handset and carrier before switching. Confirm network support, coverage, SIM needs, and the services you depend on in your location.
- Compare the purchase with the no-purchase option. You can test your smartphone’s built-in controls first; current device and plan prices are not established here.
