If your starting tight end is inactive, start the available player with the clearest path to usable work—not automatically the team’s listed backup. Confirm the status close to kickoff, compare routes and targets alongside your league’s scoring and other options, then make the move before your platform’s lineup lock.
Confirm the starter is actually inactive
Check the current week’s injury news before changing your lineup. The NFL injury report lists player practice and game status, but status can change as kickoff approaches. Recheck near the game and verify the latest designation rather than relying on an earlier report or a social post.

An injury designation is not always the same as a confirmed game-day inactive. If the starter’s status remains uncertain, consider whether you can wait for an official update without losing access to your preferred replacement.

Choose by role, not by the word “backup”
A team’s second tight end does not automatically inherit the starter’s routes, targets, or fantasy value. Look for evidence that the candidate can be involved in the passing game:

- Routes: Is the player regularly running routes, or mostly staying in to block?
- Targets: Has the player been looked at by the quarterback? A target suggests involvement, though it does not guarantee future volume.
- Opportunity created by the absence: Is there a plausible reason the inactive player’s work would shift to this candidate, rather than to another tight end or receiver?
- Scoring chances: Use current information about red-zone involvement where available; do not assume a touchdown simply because the starter is out.
Recent usage is a clue about opportunity, not a promise of fantasy points. A player with demonstrated routes and targets may be a more defensible choice than a nominal backup with little receiving involvement.
Compare your available choices in league context
If more than one tight end is an option, compare them against your league’s scoring and roster settings. Reception-heavy scoring can change the relative value of a target-catching player; yardage, touchdowns, bonuses, and roster rules can also matter. Then weigh the candidates’ roles, current projections, matchup, and team situation. Treat matchup information and one strong or poor game as context—not as a guarantee.

A dated example shows how to reason conditionally. In its 2026 Week 2 tight-end advice, NFL Fantasy recommended Michael Mayer if Brock Bowers was inactive again. The article reported that Mayer ran 23 routes in Week 1, second-most among Raiders players, and led the team with seven targets. It also cited 24.5 fantasy points allowed to Cardinals tight end Trey McBride in the Week 1 opener; that single opponent result is not a lasting matchup forecast. These figures illustrate a week-specific case, not a universal threshold or a recommendation for another week.

Check whether you can actually add the replacement
If your preferred option is not on a roster, check your league’s transaction rules before building your plan. Your league may use waiver priority, FAAB, or free-agent claims, and adding a player may require dropping someone. The NFL.com beginner’s guide describes the waiver wire, but the rules and timing in your own league determine what you can do.
Make the change before the relevant lock
Do not assume that a later-playing replacement means you can freely revise the lineup after an earlier player has started. Lock timing depends on the fantasy platform and league settings, and may apply player by player. NFL.com’s beginner guide advises: “You’ll need to make sure you set your lineup at least five minutes before the kickoff of that game.” Treat that as guidance in that guide’s context, not a universal platform rule; check your league’s exact lock mechanics. The NFL Fantasy 2025 official rules are one example of platform rules governing lineup status, but your current league settings control your move.
