How NASA Made Space-Dust Analogs in a Laboratory

NASA’s COSmIC chamber produced laboratory dust analogs from cold argon and hydrocarbons, letting researchers study particles without claiming they were collected from space.

NASA researchers used the Cosmic Simulation Chamber (COSmIC) at Ames Research Center to make and study laboratory analogs of space dust. In a 2014 experiment, they expanded cold argon gas mixed with hydrocarbons and used an electric discharge to start chemical reactions. The resulting particles were collected and imaged; they were not dust gathered from a star or formed in a miniature star.

How COSmIC simulates space chemistry

COSmIC stands for Cosmic Simulation Chamber. Developed at NASA Ames, the facility is used to generate, process and analyze laboratory analogs of materials associated with interstellar clouds, stellar envelopes and planetary environments. It can reproduce selected gas-phase conditions relevant to those settings, rather than recreating an entire star or space environment.

For the experiment described in NASA’s May 2014 release, researchers seeded argon with hydrocarbon precursors, expanded the gas into a cold jet and applied an electric discharge to initiate chemistry. They detected and characterized molecules formed in the process, then collected solid grains and examined their structures with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The controlled setup let researchers investigate how chemistry can produce particulate material under selected conditions.

What particle sizes NASA reported

NASA’s 2014 release reported several size scales from that experiment. These are measurements for the reported work, not a universal range for cosmic dust:

Particle description Reported size Context
Nanoparticles On the order of 10 nm NASA, 2014; reported for COSmIC experiments.
Grains 100–500 nm NASA, 2014; grains were collected and their structure observed with SEM.
Aggregates of grains Up to 1.5 μm in diameter NASA, 2014; an aggregate is a grouping of grains, not a single grain.

NASA attributed those measurements to Ella Sciamma-O’Brien, a BAER Institute researcher and Ames research fellow. The range matters: nanoparticles, individual grains and aggregates are different particle scales, so the largest figure should not be read as the size of every grain.

Why later experiments report different ranges

Particle size depends on the experimental mixture and conditions. A later NASA Technical Reports Server record gives separate grain-size ranges for argon mixed with methane and argon mixed with acetylene:

LINKTOR Chemistry Molecular Model Kit (444 Pieces), Student or Teacher Set for Organic and Inorganic Chemistry Learning, Motivate Enthusiasm for Learning and Raising Space Imagination, A Fullerene Set
  • FOR BASIC TEACHING TO ADVANCED SCIENCE: 444 pieces molecular model kit, including 136 atoms, 158 bonds and 150 parts for Carbon-60(Fullerene), provides to students from Grade 7 to Graduate level.
  • TWO CHEMICAL STRUCTURE MODELS: The ball-and-stick models use spheres to represent atoms and sticks to represent chemical bonds. In the space-filling model, the spheres are drawn to scale and are next to one another as atoms are in real molecules.
  • CHEMISTRY EDUCATIONAL MOLECULE MODEL IN 3D: It can display chemical structure, molecular bond, and bond angle in all directions. Demonstrate fundamental molecular geometry, chemical molecular structure, stereochemistry with 3D modeling studies.
  • EASY TO LEARN: The universal standard adopted for each atom's color makes it easier for you to use and learn. Atoms and chemical bonds combine tightly and firmly and can be easily disassembled by disconnecting tools.

Precursor mixture Reported grain range Source and qualification
Ar/CH4 (argon/methane) 15–385 nm NASA Technical Reports Server; under the study’s specified conditions.
Ar/C2H2 (argon/acetylene) 40–650 nm NASA Technical Reports Server; under the study’s specified conditions.

These later ranges should not be merged with the 2014 release’s figures into one supposed standard size distribution. They refer to different experimental work and precursor mixtures; the reported dimensions characterize those particular laboratory conditions.

What the experiment can—and cannot—show

Laboratory analogs give researchers a way to study particle formation and examine material under controlled conditions that are difficult to reproduce in space. They can help scientists investigate possible dust-formation chemistry and interpret astronomical observations. As NASA project leader Farid Salama noted in the 2014 release, “The harsh conditions of space are extremely difficult to reproduce in the laboratory, and have long hindered efforts to interpret and analyze observations from space.”

That value does not make the chamber a direct substitute for observing or sampling space. The reported grains were produced in a laboratory; the findings do not show that these exact grains formed around a star, nor do they establish that the laboratory material formed planets.
