NASA astronauts returning from the International Space Station ride home inside Crew Dragon: the spacecraft undocks, moves away from the station, separates from its trunk, and performs a deorbit burn aimed at a selected ocean landing area. After atmospheric reentry, drogue and main parachutes slow the capsule for splashdown. Recovery teams then check the capsule, bring it aboard a ship, and assess the crew before they go ashore.
What happens after Crew Dragon undocks?
Before departure, mission managers assess primary and alternate splashdown opportunities, taking into account weather, recovery-team readiness, the time from undocking to landing, and daylight where possible. They revisit the decision at several go/no-go gates.

Dragon then performs departure maneuvers to clear the International Space Station (ISS). These burns move the spacecraft away from the station while preserving options for the return. The number and timing of maneuvers depend on the mission: NASA’s Demo-2 explainer, for example, describes four departure burns followed by a later phasing burn. That sequence is not a universal schedule.

What does the deorbit burn do?
After Dragon has aligned its orbit with the selected landing opportunity, the spacecraft separates from its trunk. The trunk is discarded and burns up in the atmosphere; the crew capsule continues toward Earth.

The deorbit burn changes Dragon’s orbital path so it enters the atmosphere on a trajectory aimed at the chosen splashdown region. NASA’s return-operations reference describes a final go/no-go decision before deorbit. If teams proceed, Dragon maneuvers and performs a burn lasting several minutes. The burn is the transition from preparing and positioning in orbit to committing to atmospheric entry.
How does Crew Dragon get through reentry?
As the capsule enters the atmosphere, it encounters intense heating and slows rapidly. For the Demo-2 return in 2020, NASA estimated an entry speed of about 17,500 mph and a maximum temperature of around 3,500°F. NASA also expected a communications blackout of about six minutes on that return. These are Demo-2 estimates, not fixed figures for every Dragon flight.

The capsule’s heat shield protects it during entry. Once Dragon has slowed and reached the appropriate altitude, parachutes deploy in two stages: drogues first to stabilize and slow the capsule, then mains to reduce its speed further for water landing. NASA’s Demo-2 explainer describes two drogue and four main parachutes.
For the Crew-12 return, NASA reported on Oct. 8, 2026, that the drogues deployed at about 18,000 feet and roughly 350 mph, followed by the main parachutes at about 6,000 feet and roughly 120 mph. Those reported deployment conditions apply to that mission; they should not be treated as universal values.

Where does Dragon splash down, and can the plan change?
Crew Dragon is designed to land in water, not on a runway. The planned location and timing vary by mission, and teams monitor weather and sea conditions before committing to the return. NASA lists wind, waves, lightning, rain, and helicopter operating limits among the considerations; criteria may also depend on mission-specific spacecraft analyses.
If conditions are unsuitable, teams can delay, select another supported opportunity, or wave off and keep the crew in orbit for a later attempt. NASA’s current return-operations reference says a wave-off targets a backup opportunity about 48 hours later.

Landing-site lists are time- and mission-dependent. NASA’s current operations reference describes three supported sites off California near Los Angeles, Oceanside, and San Diego. A NASA recovery article published in April 2021 described seven sites off Florida. Neither list should be read as a permanent, all-mission set of landing locations.

To keep the landing area clear, NASA and SpaceX coordinate with the FAA and U.S. Coast Guard on a 10-nautical-mile safety zone, notices to mariners and air missions, and patrol boats.

What happens after splashdown?
Recovery begins with checks before personnel work close to the capsule. Two fast boats approach: one checks the capsule’s condition and tests for hypergolic fuel vapors, while the other handles the parachutes. Once the area and capsule are cleared for recovery, the recovery vessel hoists Dragon aboard. The hatch is opened, medical professionals conduct initial checks, and the astronauts are transferred to shore.
The elapsed time from splashdown to crew egress depends on the capsule and sea state. NASA’s 2021 recovery article gives an approximate range of 45–60 minutes; its current return reference rounds the operation to about an hour, depending on conditions.
Quick Recap
Which parts of the return are consistent, and which vary?
| Part of the return | What to expect | What can vary |
|---|---|---|
| Departure from the ISS | Dragon maneuvers away from the station. | Burn count and timing; Demo-2’s four departure burns and later phasing burn are mission-specific. |
| Deorbit and entry | The capsule separates from its trunk, then performs a burn to target atmospheric entry toward a landing region. | Selected opportunity, timing, and entry conditions. |
| Parachute descent | Drogues deploy before the main parachutes. | Reported deployment altitudes and speeds; figures from a particular mission update should remain tied to that mission. |
| Splashdown and recovery | Dragon lands in water, is checked, hoisted aboard a recovery vessel, and opened for crew assessment. | Landing site, sea and weather conditions, and time to crew egress. |
