A microwave air fryer combo puts microwave cooking and hot-air cooking in one appliance, but the functions are distinct: microwave mode uses electromagnetic waves, while air-fry mode uses a heating element and fan to circulate hot air around food. Some models also offer bake, roast, grill, or specific combination cycles that activate microwave power alongside convection or grilling. The controls, accessories, and foods supported depend on the exact model.
How does a microwave air fryer combo work?
Think of it as a microwave with additional cooking systems, rather than one universal mode that always uses both kinds of heat. In ordinary microwave mode, electromagnetic waves heat food. In documented air-fry modes, a heating element warms the air and a fan moves it around the food; a perforated basket on some models helps air circulate around the food.

Other functions may use convection, a grill, or combinations of those systems. For example, one Whirlpool all-in-one model describes Combi Bake as using microwave and convection technology, and Combi Grill as combining convection and microwave. Maytag describes its air-fry manual function as forced air combined with a grill. These are model-specific implementations, not definitions that apply to every appliance.

Mode names alone do not establish which heat sources are active. Check the owner’s manual for the appliance’s exact cycle descriptions and recommended cookware.

What can you cook in a microwave air fryer combo?
Menus differ by model, so treat these as examples from manufacturers’ instructions—not a guarantee that every combo has the same presets or results.
Air-fry foods
Whirlpool lists roast potatoes, broccoli, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, chicken nuggets, chicken wings, and French fries among the air-fry preset categories for its documented models. GE recommends manual air-fry instructions for foods such as poultry wings or legs and frozen convenience foods.

Baked and roasted foods
On models with bake or roast functions, Whirlpool’s examples include thick-crust frozen pizza, sugar cookies, muffins, fruit pie, layer cake, whole chicken, pork loin, pork roast, and beef roast. These examples use the model’s bake or roast directions; they are not necessarily air-fry presets.
Foods for combination cycles
A combination cycle may use microwave power with convection or grilling, but its presence does not mean every recipe is suitable for that cycle. Choose a recipe and cookware compatible with the specific mode described in the manual.

How to use air-fry mode safely
- Check the manual. Confirm the correct accessory, cookware, food quantity, temperature, cooking time, and whether the appliance needs preheating.
- Use the specified accessory. Depending on the model, instructions may call for an air-fry basket, baking tray, or rack. Do not assume an accessory from another appliance will fit or be safe.
- Load and position food as directed. Some instructions call for centering the basket or turning food when prompted. A microwave-safe dish may be placed below a basket to catch drips only if that model’s directions allow it.
- Protect yourself when removing food. The cavity surfaces, basket, and glass tray can become hot. Maytag advises using oven mitts when handling its air-fry accessories.
Settings are not standardized. For instance, Whirlpool’s cited help page gives a 400°F manual air-fry default, while Maytag’s documented model gives a 425°F default and allows 400–450°F. Those values apply to the respective instructions, not to all combos. Follow your model’s directions for temperature, timing, flipping, and accessory placement.

- Countertop or over-the-range format, cavity capacity, and microwave wattage.
- Whether it includes air fry, bake, roast, grill, convection, or named combination modes—and what each mode activates.
- Which basket, tray, or rack is included, whether it is dishwasher-safe, and whether a compatible replacement is available for that model.
- Preset menus and whether the instructions give manual controls for foods not listed as presets.
As one product example—not a category-wide specification—the Whirlpool WMCS5522RS listing describes a 1.0 cu. ft. countertop appliance with microwave, air-fry, bake, roast, and combination functions. It says the bake mode uses convection up to 400°F and identifies an included dishwasher-safe air-fry basket.
