In Nepal, mutual-fund costs come from two places: recurring expenses deducted inside the fund’s NAV and transaction charges paid when you buy or redeem units. A commonly cited management-fee ceiling is 1.5% of NAV, while depository and supervisor charges are often around 0.20% each, but every scheme’s prospectus and current schedule controls. Open-ended funds may also apply an exit load, depository (DP) fees and capital-gains tax when you sell.
What mutual-fund fees pay for
A mutual fund pools investors’ money and hires licensed parties to manage, safeguard, value and report on the portfolio. Those services are not free. Some expenses are taken from the fund’s assets before the daily or periodic NAV is published; others are charged directly to an investor’s purchase or redemption transaction.

The percentage printed in a prospectus is usually an annual rate, even though the economic effect appears gradually through NAV calculations. If a fund’s portfolio earns a return before expenses, the NAV reflects the permitted expenses deducted during the period. Your account statement may therefore show no separate debit for management or depository costs, while your return is still lower than the portfolio’s gross performance.

Who regulates mutual funds in Nepal?
The Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON) is the securities regulator. Its stated role is to “Register mutual funds, grant permission to operate collective investment schemes, and supervise and monitor them.” SEBON publishes the Mutual Fund Guidelines-2069 and compiles securities laws that govern collective investment schemes.
Regulatory ceilings and disclosure rules provide a framework, but they do not make every fund’s charge identical. A scheme can disclose a supervisor fee below a commonly cited ceiling, use a different NAV-averaging base, or set its own exit-load schedule within the applicable rules. SEBON amendments, tax rules and each fund’s updated documents should be checked before subscribing or redeeming.
Recurring costs deducted through NAV
The following are the main recurring categories identified in Nepalese mutual-fund disclosures. Percentages are normally expressed against NAV, but the exact averaging method and timing matter.

| Charge | Rates reported in Nepalese sources | How it affects you |
|---|---|---|
| Fund-management fee | Up to 1.5% of NAV in a 2020 summary of Mutual Fund Regulation 2067; 1.5% is also listed on current Nabil and NMB scheme pages. | Compensates the investment manager. It is accrued in the fund’s expenses and lowers NAV rather than usually appearing as a separate bill. |
| Depository fee | 0.20% of NAV in the same regulation summary; 0.2% is listed by Nabil and NMB pages. | Pays for custody and depository functions. The charge is reflected in the scheme’s expense calculation. |
| Supervisor fee | A 0.20% ceiling is reported in the regulation summary. NIMB Ace Capital disclosed 0.12% of NAV in its 2021 annual report, while NMB Hybrid Fund L-II lists 0.10% of average weekly NAV on its current scheme page. | The actual rate and NAV base depend on the scheme documents. Older annual-report figures should not be treated as current rates for another fund. |
| Operating and transaction expenses | No single percentage applies. Permitted costs can include audit, listing and renewal, brokerage on portfolio trades, notices and publications, reporting, CDS registration and other scheme expenses. | These may be charged at actual cost when allowed by the prospectus. They can make two funds with the same headline management fee produce different net returns. |
Why the NAV-averaging base matters
A fee quoted as a percentage of NAV is not necessarily calculated from the NAV you see on one particular day. NIMB Ace Capital’s annual report says fees were calculated using the applicable NAV-averaging method and SEBON rules. NMB Hybrid Fund L-II specifies average weekly NAV for its 0.10% supervisor fee. A prospectus should state whether the base is daily, weekly, monthly or another permitted average and how accruals are posted.
Illustrative recurring-cost calculation
Suppose a scheme has an average NAV of NPR 10,000,000 for a year and its disclosed rates are 1.5% management, 0.20% depository and 0.10% supervisor. The illustrative amounts would be NPR 150,000, NPR 20,000 and NPR 10,000 respectively, before operating expenses. That is NPR 180,000, or 1.80% of the assumed average NAV. This is a teaching example, not a forecast: rates can use different bases, periods can be shorter than a year, and actual expenses can change the result.
What you pay when buying units
Entry load is not universal
An entry load is a sales charge deducted when you subscribe. Some Nepalese schemes may have no entry load, while another product can disclose a purchase charge. Do not infer the answer from the fund category or from a different manager’s product; read the current offer document and application instructions.

Transfer or transaction fees
Nabil Invest’s NI31 product page states: “For Buying: There are no charges except Transfer fee of NPR 5 for one transaction while buying.” That is a scheme-specific example of a small direct transaction charge. It does not mean every open-ended fund uses NPR 5, nor that recurring NAV expenses disappear. Confirm whether a transfer fee is charged per order, per folio or per transaction and whether the amount can change.

Redemption, exit loads and tax
Open-ended funds allow investors to sell units back under the scheme’s redemption process. The amount you receive can be reduced by an exit load, a depository or DP charge and tax on a taxable gain. The timing of your sale is therefore as important as the fund’s published return.
NI31 exit-load schedule
| Holding period stated by the scheme | Exit charge | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Up to one year | 1.5% of the transaction amount | A redemption during this period incurs the highest listed load. |
| More than one year and up to two years | 0.75% of the transaction amount | The charge drops after the first anniversary but remains until two years. |
| Beyond two years from allotment | No charge applicable | The page states that no exit charge applies after the two-year threshold. |
Nabil Invest also says capital-gains tax may be charged when a gain remains after the exit charge, together with the NPR 5 transfer fee. NMB Capital’s FAQ similarly describes open-ended-fund redemptions as generally involving an exit-load fee, DP fees and capital-gains tax on profitable sales, with DP fees calculated on purchase. Tax treatment can change, so use the current rule and the amount shown by the fund or intermediary for your transaction.

Worked redemption example
Assume you redeem units for NPR 110,000 while still within the first year under the NI31 schedule. A 1.5% exit load on the transaction amount would be NPR 1,650, leaving NPR 108,350 before any applicable tax or other stated transaction charge. If the same transaction occurred after more than one year but no more than two years, the 0.75% load would be NPR 825. After two years, the stated exit load would be zero, although tax or another disclosed fee could still apply. Your actual taxable gain depends on the relevant cost basis and tax rules, not merely on the redemption value.

There is no published, current nationwide average expense ratio covering all Nepalese mutual funds in the available regulator and fund-manager material. The practical answer to “Which fund has the lowest charges?” is therefore a document-by-document comparison, not a permanent league table.

| Comparison axis | Questions to answer in the documents |
|---|---|
| Management fee | What is the percentage, is it a ceiling or the current rate, and what NAV-averaging base is used? |
| Depository and supervisor fees | Are the rates 0.20%, 0.10%, 0.12% or another figure for this scheme? Are they calculated on daily, weekly or another average? |
| Entry and transfer charges | Is there an entry load? Is a transfer fee charged per transaction, and when is it collected? |
| Exit-load tiers | What holding periods trigger each rate, and is the percentage applied to the transaction amount or another stated base? |
| Operating expenses | Does the scheme charge audit, listing, renewal, brokerage, reporting, publication, CDS and other costs at actual cost? What did the latest annual report actually disclose? |
| Tax and redemption mechanics | How is a profitable sale reported, which DP fees apply, and what documents or cut-off times govern redemption? |
Look beyond the headline percentage
A fund advertising a 1.5% management fee is not automatically cheaper than one with the same rate. One may have lower supervisor or operating expenses, fewer portfolio trades, or a shorter exit-load period. Conversely, a lower management rate can be outweighed by higher actual-cost expenses or a costly early redemption. Compare the latest audited figures and the contractual schedule together.

Practical checklist before investing
- Download the latest prospectus and scheme information. Record every stated fee, the effective date and whether the amount is a ceiling, a recurring rate or an actual-cost item.
- Check the annual report. Look for the expense notes, the NAV-averaging method and the rupee amount spent on audit, brokerage, listing, reporting and other operations.
- Separate NAV expenses from transaction charges. Management, depository and supervisor costs normally reduce NAV; entry, transfer and exit charges can reduce the cash you pay or receive directly.
- Model your holding period. Apply each exit-load tier to the amount you expect to redeem, then allow for tax and DP or transfer fees.
- Confirm redemption details. Ask the fund manager or authorised intermediary about cut-off time, required forms, settlement timing and the exact net amount before submitting an order.
- Recheck before a large order. Fees, tax rules and scheme terms can be amended. Use the current SEBON information and the manager’s latest notice rather than an old social-media post or a historical annual report.
Common mistakes that make funds look cheaper than they are
- Comparing only management fees: depository, supervisor, brokerage and other permitted expenses also reduce investors’ net returns.
- Treating a regulatory ceiling as a universal price: a 0.20% ceiling or a 1.5% reported rate does not prove that every scheme charges exactly that amount.
- Ignoring the averaging base: “0.10% of average weekly NAV” is not the same disclosure as a fee on a single end-of-day NAV.
- Forgetting the holding-period clock: an early redemption can trigger an exit load even when the fund’s NAV has increased.
- Assuming a zero exit load means zero cost: tax on a gain, DP fees or a transfer charge may still apply.
- Using old figures as current: the 0.12% supervisor fee disclosed by NIMB Ace Capital was in its 2021 annual report and must be labelled by that fiscal period.
What “lowest charges” really means
The lowest advertised rate is not necessarily the lowest total cost for your situation. A long-term investor may care most about recurring expenses and actual operating costs, while someone who may redeem within a year should focus on exit-load tiers and tax. The defensible comparison is the expected rupee cost over your intended holding period, using the latest scheme documents and your likely transaction amount.
Because Nepal does not publish one current, comparable expense-ratio average for all funds, investors must build that comparison themselves. Keep a copy of the fee schedule, note its effective date, and recalculate whenever the fund issues an amendment or a new annual report.
