Music creates protagonist–antagonist tension by teaching the audience a sonic expectation, then delaying, distorting or denying the expected release. A recurring motif can identify either character, their relationship or an idea; its meaning changes when the motif moves to a new instrument, key, register or point of view. Melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre, silence and production texture can therefore make a conflict feel inevitable before the characters explain it.
The most effective scores do not simply give the hero a pleasant theme and the villain a frightening one. They establish two psychological sound worlds, let those worlds interfere with each other, and force the listener to reassess familiar music as the story reveals new information.

Why musical tension feels emotional
Listeners constantly predict what music will do next. A phrase suggests a continuation, a dominant harmony suggests a tonic, a pulse suggests another beat, and a repeated theme suggests that the same character or idea is returning. Tension appears when the score creates a desire for completion and postpones, redirects or withholds it. Release can be a cadence, a return to a stable register, a reduction in dissonance or simply the restoration of a familiar texture.
This expectation is learned inside the story. The first appearance of a character’s motif may be heard only a few times, but repetition teaches its contour, tempo, instrumentation and emotional promise. Once the audience knows that promise, a composer can create conflict without adding volume: the motif can arrive a half-step away from its usual harmony, stop before its final note, or appear in the antagonist’s metallic register. The listener recognizes the identity while hearing that something is wrong.

Musical storytelling is therefore built on “tension and release,” a principle composers describe as central to narrative scoring. The technique is expressive rather than mechanical: the same unresolved chord can signal danger, grief or moral uncertainty depending on whose perspective controls the scene.
Give each side a distinct sonic identity
The protagonist’s sound
A protagonist’s material often needs an identifiable center: a singable interval, a human-sounding instrument, a regular breath or a harmony that can eventually settle. Stability does not mean cheerfulness. A vulnerable melody with an exposed pause can make the character feel human while leaving room for growth. Keep one element consistent—perhaps the contour or pulse—so that later corruption is audible.
The antagonist’s sound
An antagonist can be characterized by procedural repetition, unusual timbre, unstable harmony, extreme register or a rhythm that seems indifferent to human breath. The sound should express the character’s method, not merely announce evil. A precise sequenced pattern can suggest systems and control; a brittle upper register can imply fragility that has become threatening; a low drone can make an unseen presence feel physically close.

| Musical dimension | Protagonist option | Antagonist option | What the contrast communicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melodic shape | Uneven, breathing phrases with a recognizable rise or fall | Short cells repeated with little expressive deviation | Human choice versus imposed procedure |
| Timbre | Acoustic, woody or vocal colors with audible attack and decay | Metallic, processed or abrasive colors with rigid envelopes | Organic vulnerability versus engineered threat |
| Register | A middle register that leaves space around the line | Sub-bass pressure or an unnaturally high, thin layer | Embodied presence versus destabilization |
| Rhythm | Flexible timing, rubato or a pulse that can stop | Mechanical ostinato, asymmetrical accents or relentless subdivision | Agency versus compulsion |
| Harmony | Consonant intervals that can be reharmonized later | Clusters, tritones, shifting pedal tones or unresolved suspensions | Trust and orientation versus uncertainty |
Petri Alanko described one opposed pair with exactly this kind of vocabulary: Dylan was “rough,” “larger than life,” “gut-wrenching,” “human, yet inhuman,” and “organic,” while Hedron was “strangely familiar yet frightening,” “clangorous,” “structured and sequenced,” “mathematical and procedural.” The point is not to copy those sounds, but to make the contrast audible in every parameter. When two characters share a scene, the audience should be able to hear which psychological system is exerting pressure.
Use leitmotifs to teach expectation, then break it
Establish the promise
Introduce a motif before the central conflict becomes fully legible. Give it enough repetition for the audience to remember its interval pattern or rhythm, but avoid explaining it with dialogue. A two- or four-note cell can be more flexible than a long melody. Decide what the motif promises: safety, curiosity, authority, intimacy or danger.

Alter one feature at a time
When the protagonist encounters the antagonist, change a controlled variable. Keep the contour but reharmonize it; keep the harmony but move the motif into a colder register; keep the notes but replace a warm instrument with a sequenced pulse. The listener recognizes the identity and feels the disturbance simultaneously. Gradual alteration is useful for manipulation or seduction, while an abrupt break suits betrayal or a reveal.
Let motifs contaminate one another
Relationship tension becomes explicit when one character’s material enters the other’s musical space. Place the antagonist’s harmony under the protagonist’s melody, let the protagonist’s interval appear inside the antagonist’s ostinato, or combine both motifs in counterpoint and remove the expected cadence. This technique can show influence without a verbal confession. The score says that the characters are no longer psychologically separate.

A theme first heard as noble can become coercive when played over the antagonist’s pedal tone or from a hostile point of view. Nathan Johnson has described repeating a motif and then introducing dissonance as a character moves through different masks, seeking beauty and danger at the same time. The motif remains recognizable, but its social meaning changes.
Keep suspense alive with drones, ostinatos and pulse
Drones
A sustained pitch or narrow interval can sit beneath dialogue for an extended passage. Because the drone does not provide a clear destination, it keeps the body alert while the surface music appears calm. Change its volume, filtering or orchestration rather than abandoning it when the scene seems safer; a barely audible remainder can preserve unease.
Ostinatos
An ostinato turns time into pressure. Repetition can represent an antagonist’s system, a protagonist’s determination or an external deadline. To avoid monotony, alter accents, orchestration or the harmony above the pattern. Breaking the ostinato at the exact moment the audience expects continuation can be more startling than adding a loud hit.

Subtle pulses
Nicholas Britell described sustained strings and low-volume beats in Andor as reminders of constant tension. A pulse can continue beneath a positive event, telling the listener that the apparent victory has not removed the underlying threat. The effect works because the body responds to regularity even when the conscious mind is following dialogue.

Dissonance is not synonymous with “villain music.” Its dramatic force comes from contrast and timing. If a score has established a consonant norm, a single foreign interval can pull the listener back into unease. Britell noted that dissonant tones can return the audience to tension even after something good happens. The dissonance functions as memory: the conflict is still present beneath the event.
Non-resolution can be harmonic or structural. End a phrase on a suspended note, interrupt a cadence with a cut to silence, or let a motif disappear before its final beat. Reserve the most extreme withholding for moments when the audience wants moral or physical certainty. If every cue refuses resolution, refusal stops communicating anything.
Use controlled unpredictability for a reveal
Michael Abels described making an antagonist’s reveal in The Acolyte more dissonant than the battle music, with partly aleatoric writing. Aleatoric texture does not mean random noise without design: the composer sets rules for pitch, duration, register or entrance, then allows performers limited freedom inside them. The result can sound ugly and frightening because the listener cannot reduce it to a predictable pattern.
For a practical version, keep one anchor—such as a low pedal or a fixed rhythmic duration—and make the upper events unstable. The anchor gives the scene coherence; the bounded irregularity makes the antagonist feel beyond the protagonist’s control.

Score point of view, not only character identity
The same theme can carry opposite moral meanings when the camera’s viewpoint changes. Abels said the themes in The Acolyte were tied more to emotion, point of view or literary theme than to a particular character. A traditional-sounding figure may feel reassuring when heard with the Jedi on Coruscant, then become uncomfortable when the same culture is viewed by people on Brendok who experience it as hostile.
To shift viewpoint, keep the motif’s notes but change its acoustics. Move it from a full, centered orchestration to a distant or muffled perspective; place an unfamiliar harmony beneath it; alter the rhythmic emphasis so that a confident march sounds like an approaching threat. This avoids a simplistic “hero theme versus villain theme” model and lets the audience discover that moral certainty was conditional.
Use silence and texture to make the audience supply the threat
Dense scoring can signal conflict, but reduction often creates stronger anticipation. Remove bass, shorten reverberation or leave a single exposed tone before a reveal. The ear becomes sensitive to small changes because there is no musical clutter to mask them. Silence also gives dialogue, breathing and room tone dramatic weight.
Mica Levi’s score for The Zone of Interest begins over black with a roiling, descending sound mass before yielding to ordinary environmental sounds. The contrast creates cognitive dissonance: domestic normality is heard alongside an unseen horror. The score does not illustrate every violent detail; it makes the audience imagine what the normal surface is concealing. A protagonist–antagonist scene can use the same strategy by allowing the antagonist’s sonic residue to remain outside the frame while the protagonist performs an everyday action.
A step-by-step method for composing the relationship
- Define the dramatic question. Write the exact uncertainty the scene must sustain: Can the protagonist trust the antagonist? Who is controlling the encounter? Is the apparent ally concealing a motive? This determines whether the music should lean toward intimacy, pursuit or revelation.
- Choose one sonic promise for each side. Select a motif, a timbral family and a rhythmic behavior for the protagonist and antagonist. Keep the choices distinct enough to identify without dialogue.
- Introduce the motifs separately. Give each character a clear first appearance. Avoid combining them until the audience has learned their identities.
- Set the baseline tension. Decide whether the scene begins consonant, dissonant, pulsed or silent. A stable opening creates room for escalation; an already chaotic opening requires a different kind of change, such as sudden stillness.
- Choose the interference point. Mark the moment when one character gains information or power. At that instant, alter one musical parameter: harmony, register, instrument, tempo, accent or texture.
- Build pressure without constant loudness. Sustain a drone, tighten an ostinato, shorten phrase lengths or reduce the space between entrances. Let intensity rise through density and expectation, not only volume.
- Withhold the expected release. Stop before the cadence, displace the final note or cut to silence. Make the withholding correspond to the unresolved story question.
- Re-score after the reveal. Return to a familiar motif in its new context. If the audience now knows that the antagonist has influenced the protagonist, allow the antagonist’s timbre or harmony to remain inside the protagonist’s theme.
Shape the musical arc as the relationship changes
First encounter: recognition with distance
Present both motifs with separate orchestration and a shared neutral element, such as a common pulse or pedal tone. The shared element hints at connection while the contrasting surfaces preserve opposition.
Best Value
Negotiation or temporary alliance
Let the motifs overlap without fully resolving. The protagonist’s melody may borrow the antagonist’s rhythm, or the antagonist’s harmony may briefly support the protagonist. Keep one irregularity—an unstable bass note or missing cadence—to prevent the alliance from sounding secure.
Betrayal or contamination
Invert the hierarchy: place the antagonist’s material in the foreground and force the protagonist’s motif into a reduced register or fragmented rhythm. The audience hears loss of agency before the scene confirms it visually.
Reveal and aftermath
For the reveal itself, use the greatest contrast between expectation and result. A controlled aleatoric layer, sudden register change or abrupt silence can expose the antagonist. Afterward, do not reset immediately. Reintroduce the protagonist’s theme with the contamination that the reveal has made meaningful.
What the major examples demonstrate
| Example | Primary device | How tension is produced |
|---|---|---|
| Petri Alanko’s Dylan and Hedron pairing | Contrasting identities | Dylan’s organic, human qualities oppose Hedron’s clangorous, sequenced and procedural sound world, making their conflict audible as a clash of psychologies. |
| Nathan Johnson’s motif practice | Repetition followed by dissonant alteration | A familiar motif persists as a character changes masks, combining beauty with danger instead of replacing one emotion with another. |
| Nicholas Britell’s Andor approach | Drones, sustained strings and low-volume beats | A bodily pulse and sustained tension continue beneath calm or positive events, preventing easy emotional release. |
| Michael Abels’s The Acolyte reveal | Dissonance and bounded aleatoric texture | Unstable, ugly sonorities make the reveal more frightening than a conventional action cue, while rules keep the unpredictability purposeful. |
| Mica Levi’s The Zone of Interest | Texture, silence and cognitive dissonance | A roiling opening sound mass gives way to ordinary environmental sound, making unseen horror coexist with domestic normality. |
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Making the antagonist permanently loud. Constant intensity removes contrast. Use a quiet drone, a thin high register or a missing cadence so the audience remains alert without fatigue.
- Writing two unrelated themes. Separate identities are useful at first, but conflict becomes dramatic when motifs share a contour, interval or pulse that can later be transformed.
- Using dissonance without a baseline. Establish what consonance means in this score before breaking it. Otherwise every interval sounds equally unstable.
- Explaining the reveal musically too early. Foreshadow with a small timbral or harmonic anomaly, then reserve the strongest distortion for the moment of recognition.
- Ignoring viewpoint. A theme can sound heroic only because of its orchestration and camera alignment. Re-score it from the other character’s perspective before deciding what it “means.”
- Resolving every scene. Leave the cadence incomplete when the story question remains open, but provide release when the narrative has genuinely answered it; selective closure gives both outcomes weight.
A practical decision rule
When a scene needs more tension, first ask what the audience already expects to hear. Then choose one precise disruption—an altered motif, an invading timbre, a displaced pulse, a withheld cadence or a strategic silence—and connect that disruption to the change in power or knowledge between the characters. Emotional tension is strongest when the musical disturbance is not decorative: it is the audible evidence that the protagonist and antagonist can no longer occupy separate worlds.
