A multi-game Sega Genesis cartridge stores many game ROM images on one cartridge and presents them through a menu. When you choose a title, the cartridge maps that ROM into the Genesis cartridge address space, selects the mapper mode the game needs, and boots it as though it were in an original single-game cartridge. The games do not run simultaneously: changing titles is a reset-and-reload operation.
Save behavior depends on the cartridge hardware and on how you leave a game. Battery-backed SRAM, automatic SD-card backup, EEPROM support and save states are different mechanisms. On flashcarts documented by Krikzz, returning to the menu or pressing RESET before switching off is essential because the active save may still be held in volatile memory.

What a Genesis multi-game cartridge actually contains
A conventional Genesis cartridge contains one ROM image and, for save-enabled games, additional save hardware. A multi-game cartridge replaces that one-image arrangement with storage for many ROMs, plus logic that chooses which image the console can see. In inexpensive fixed multicarts, the ROM files are preloaded at the factory. In an EverDrive-style flashcart, the games are read from an SD card and loaded into the cartridge’s flash or RAM resources.

The cartridge menu reads a file list, waits for your selection and configures the hardware for that title. The selected ROM is then mapped into the same address ranges used by an original cartridge. The Genesis’s Motorola 68000 processor runs the game’s native code; the cartridge is not emulating a different console in software.

Mega EverDrive documentation describes separate modes for standard Genesis software, Super Street Fighter II (SSF), CD BIOS, Master System, 32X and large-ROM games. Those modes exist because cartridges do not all use identical address maps or mapper behavior. A correct mode lets the game see the memory layout it expects.
Why games are loaded one at a time
Cartridge memory is presented as the currently selected title. Selecting another file cannot safely replace that mapping while the first game is running, so the normal sequence is:
- Exit the game to the cartridge menu, usually with the cart’s in-game menu or a console RESET.
- Choose a different ROM from the file list.
- Let the cartridge configure the required mapper and copy or map the image.
- Allow the new title to boot from its reset vector.
This is why switching games resembles rebooting a computer rather than changing channels on a television. Unsaved progress in the running game is at risk if you simply cut power.
How game switching works in practice
Starting a game from a fixed multicart
Turn on the Genesis with the cartridge inserted, wait for its menu, highlight a title and press the menu’s confirm button. The cartridge selects the corresponding ROM region and resets the console into that game. A fixed cart normally offers only the titles and menu options programmed into it; adding a new ROM requires replacing or reprogramming the cartridge.

Starting a game from an SD-based flashcart
With an EverDrive-style cartridge, the menu scans the SD card’s folders and displays the ROM files. Select a file, confirm, and wait for the cartridge to finish loading before pressing buttons or switching off the console. Folder navigation is the practical difference from a fixed multicart: the library is maintained on the card rather than being permanently limited to a factory list.
Returning to the menu
Use the cartridge’s documented in-game menu shortcut when available. Otherwise press the Genesis RESET button. The Mega EverDrive manual’s “Select And Start” and “Select Only” options describe menu paths that return to the loader; the exact shortcut depends on the firmware and cartridge generation. Do not assume that pulling the cartridge out or cycling the power performs a safe save operation.
How normal Genesis saves work
Battery-backed SRAM in original cartridges
Many save-enabled Genesis games use static RAM (SRAM) instead of writing progress back into the ROM. The game enables that RAM through registers commonly located in the 0xA13000–0xA130FF range, then reads and writes save data there. A battery supplies power to the SRAM while the console is off, preserving the bytes until the battery fails or the memory is cleared.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The game itself decides when to write a save. Some titles save at a menu; others save after a checkpoint or when you explicitly choose “Save.” A cartridge can provide compatible SRAM and still appear not to save if the game has not reached its own save command.

How a flashcart preserves those saves
A flashcart must expose the type of save memory the ROM expects and then move the data to non-volatile storage. The Mega EverDrive v2 manual states that, with SRAM backup enabled, changing games creates a save file in /MEGA/SAVE/ using a name matching the ROM. When you select that game later, the cartridge copies the file back into SRAM before launch.
This automatic file path applies to games that actually use battery-save SRAM. A title with no built-in save system will not gain one merely because it is running from a flashcart. Conversely, a ROM hack or translated version may use a different save layout and should be tested separately.
The critical power-off rule
An older Mega EverDrive manual warns: “During game play the game save data is placed in the cart’s SDRAM memory.” SDRAM is volatile, so its contents disappear when power is removed. The documented safe procedure is to press RESET, wait for the cartridge to return to its menu and allow it to copy the current data to the SD card before turning off the Genesis.
In practical terms, use this sequence after saving in a game:

- Complete the game’s own save operation and wait for its confirmation.
- Press RESET or invoke the documented return-to-menu shortcut.
- Wait until the cartridge menu is fully visible and SD activity has stopped.
- Only then switch off the console.
If the console loses power while the save is still in SDRAM, the previous SD-card file may be all that remains. Keep a backup copy of the /MEGA/SAVE/ directory when a save matters.
Save states are not the same as game saves
A normal save is data the game understands and can usually load on an original cartridge. A save state is a snapshot of the emulator-like execution state maintained by the flashcart: CPU registers, RAM and other machine state at one instant. It may resume in places where the game offers no save point, but it is not interchangeable with the game’s SRAM file.
The cited Mega EverDrive manuals describe snapshot files as experimental and warn of hangs, missing sound and graphical glitches. They also document modes in which snapshots are unavailable, including 32X and Sega CD on the referenced firmware. Treat save states as a convenience, not as the only copy of long-term progress, and verify that the feature is supported for the specific mapper and firmware you are using.
Fixed multicart versus EverDrive-style flashcart
| Feature | Fixed multi-game cartridge | EverDrive-style flashcart |
|---|---|---|
| Game selection | Preloaded menu with a fixed list | SD-card library with folders and user-selected ROM files |
| Storage | Factory ROM or flash contents | Cartridge flash/PSRAM plus removable SD or microSD storage, depending on model |
| Save persistence | Varies; may use a battery-backed SRAM and may require a power-cycle procedure | Compatible SRAM is backed up to per-ROM files; the Mega EverDrive v2 documents /MEGA/SAVE/ backup when SRAM backup is enabled |
| Mapper coverage | Depends on the cart’s fixed hardware | Documented modes include regular Genesis, SSF, CD BIOS, Master System, 32X and large-ROM layouts |
| Save states | Usually absent | Supported on some modes and firmware; documented snapshots are experimental and have limitations |
| Maintenance | Limited to battery or hardware repair where applicable | SD-card file management, firmware compatibility, possible battery maintenance and safe-reset discipline |
There is no universal “multicart save” behavior. The exact model, firmware and game determine whether saves are battery-backed, written to an SD card automatically or unsupported.

Compatibility: Genesis models, 32X, CD and regions
32X games still need a 32X
A cartridge that supports 32X ROMs does not replace the physical 32X add-on. The console must have a working 32X installed, with its own cables and video path, for a 32X game to run. The flashcart supplies the ROM and mapper support; it does not provide the add-on’s processors or video hardware.
Mega-CD and CD BIOS software
Documentation lists a CD BIOS mapper mode, but CD software also depends on the Mega-CD hardware and its BIOS. A cartridge menu entry cannot turn a cartridge-only Genesis into a CD system. Save-state availability may also differ in Sega CD mode.
Master System and special mappers
Some flashcarts include a Master System mode, allowing compatible Master System ROMs to use the Genesis hardware and adapter path. Super Street Fighter II and very large ROMs have their own documented mapper selections. If a game shows a blank screen, loops at boot or has severe graphics errors, the first check is whether the correct mode and a known-good ROM dump were selected.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Console revisions and regional timing
Genesis and Mega Drive revisions can differ in timing, audio behavior and region signaling. Imported ROMs may expect a different region or video standard. A title that works on one console can require a region setting, a compatible ROM revision or a different firmware configuration on another. Compatibility claims should therefore be read as product-generation claims, not guarantees for every motherboard, clone console or ROM hack.
What the Mega EverDrive Pro specification adds
The official Mega EverDrive PRO specification lists a Cyclone IV FPGA, 16 MB of PSRAM and 1 MB of SRAM. It states support for Genesis, 32X, Mega-CD and Master System software, Pier Solar mapper support, an in-game menu, full EEPROM saves, a real-time clock for save logging and 100 save-state slots per game.
| Listed capability | What it means for a user |
|---|---|
| Cyclone IV FPGA | Programmable logic can implement multiple cartridge mappings rather than one fixed ROM wiring. |
| 16 MB PSRAM | Provides working memory for large ROM images and runtime mapping. |
| 1 MB SRAM | Provides space for cartridge-style save data and system operations. |
| Full EEPROM saves | Supports games whose original cartridges store progress in EEPROM rather than battery SRAM. |
| Real-time clock | Enables time information for save logging and software that depends on a clock. |
| 100 save-state slots per game | Offers many snapshot slots where the selected mode and firmware support save states. |
The 2014 Mega EverDrive v2 manual says it “Supports 99% of games from SEGA library.” That is a manufacturer claim for that product generation, not an independently audited compatibility test. Special hardware, unusual ROM revisions, region differences and firmware changes can produce exceptions.
Troubleshooting lost saves and failed boots
The save disappeared after switching off
- Confirm that the game completed its own save command.
- Return to the cartridge menu with RESET before removing power.
- Check whether the matching file exists in
/MEGA/SAVE/. - Restore a known-good backup of that save file if the SD card was corrupted.
- For an original or fixed cartridge, test the save battery and SRAM; a depleted battery cannot retain data while the console is off.
The game boots to a blank screen or crashes
- Verify that the ROM is intended for Genesis/Mega Drive hardware and is not a damaged dump.
- Try the mapper mode required by the title, such as SSF, large-ROM or 32X.
- Check region and video-standard expectations on the console.
- For 32X or Mega-CD software, confirm that the physical add-on and its BIOS are present.
- Update firmware only with files intended for the exact cartridge model, then retest with a known-compatible ROM.
The menu cannot see games
- Use an SD or microSD card formatted in the file system supported by the cartridge and copy files into a simple folder structure.
- Check that the card is fully inserted and that filenames use ordinary characters.
- Test another card if the menu freezes, reports read errors or shows an empty directory.
A safe routine for everyday use
- Start the Genesis with the cartridge and wait for the menu to finish scanning.
- Choose one ROM and let it boot completely.
- Save through the game’s own menu or checkpoint.
- Use the documented return-to-menu shortcut or press RESET.
- Wait for the menu and any SD-card activity to finish.
- Select the next game, or power off only after the save-backup step is complete.
- Back up the save directory periodically to another device.
Following that routine preserves the distinction between a game’s normal save, the flashcart’s temporary memory and its permanent save file. It also makes switching titles predictable: every change is a controlled reset, mapper selection and reboot.
