There is no single uninsured motorist (UM) limit that fits every U.S. driver. Start by checking your state’s rules and the limits your policy offers, then choose protection with serious injuries and your household’s finances in mind. Compare quotes only when UM bodily-injury, underinsured motorist (UIM), and any UM property-damage limits match.
What UM and UIM coverage protect
Uninsured motorist coverage can protect insured people injured in a qualifying crash with an at-fault driver who has no bodily-injury liability insurance. Depending on state law and the policy, it may also apply to hit-and-run crashes, or when the other driver’s insurer denies coverage or becomes insolvent. Underinsured motorist coverage applies when the at-fault driver has insurance, but not enough to cover serious losses. The NAIC explains these coverage types in its Uninsured Motorist Coverage Model Act.

UM and UIM may include bodily-injury and property-damage components, but availability and terms vary. Do not assume that a bodily-injury limit also covers your car. Liability insurance covers harm you cause to others; UM/UIM addresses certain losses caused by another driver. Collision and comprehensive are separate coverages for damage to your own vehicle.

How to choose an amount
The NAIC’s consumer guide does not set a universal limit for every driver. It warns that “The state-required minimum coverages are usually not enough to fully protect you and your assets.” Use the minimum as a legal starting point, not an automatic measure of adequate protection.

- Check your state’s rules and options. Find out whether UM is required, whether you can reject it, what limits are available, and whether bodily-injury and property-damage coverage are treated separately. State requirements and rejection procedures differ. The NAIC’s 2025 Auto Insurance Database Report says 23 states require UM coverage, while 19 additional states require it unless rejected in writing. Those are categories reported in that database, not a substitute for checking current law in your state.
- Read your declarations page and policy. Identify the current UM bodily-injury and UIM limits, any UM property-damage limit, and relevant deductibles, exclusions, and coordination rules. Check how your policy defines covered people, hit-and-run claims, and an underinsured driver. If the policy shows limits per person and per accident, use those actual figures when comparing options.
- Think through a serious injury, not just a minor crash. Ask whether the limit would provide meaningful help if an uninsured or underinsured driver seriously injured you or a covered household member. Consider the financial consequences and protection available from other sources. Health insurance, disability coverage, personal injury protection (PIP), or medical payments coverage (MedPay) serve different purposes; their presence alone does not establish that UM/UIM is unnecessary.
- Ask what higher limits cost. Request prices for the limits you are considering, including UM property damage where available. Compare insurer quotes with the same limits and coverage types. The NAIC’s Consumer Auto Insurance Shopping Tool advises shoppers to “Note the limits of coverage below for each company’s quote to be sure you are comparing the same coverage.”
- Confirm details with your state insurance department or insurer. If the available options or policy language are unclear, ask the insurer or agent to explain them, and consult your state insurance department for state-specific requirements or consumer assistance.
Compare the coverage parts separately

Use the policy’s terms rather than assuming that a particular claim will qualify. State law and contract language determine how UM/UIM applies.
What uninsured-driver statistics can—and cannot—tell you
The NAIC reports an Insurance Research Council estimate that 15.4% of motorists were uninsured in 2023—about one in seven. The reported state estimates ranged from 5.7% in Maine to 28.2% in Mississippi. These figures describe population-level estimates for that year; they are not your personal odds of a crash and do not calculate the limit you need. Keep UM separate from other auto coverage
UM/UIM is not a replacement for liability coverage, which protects others when you cause harm. Nor is it the same as collision or comprehensive coverage for your own vehicle. A lender may require physical-damage coverage on a financed car, but that requirement does not determine an appropriate UM bodily-injury limit.

For general consumer guidance, the NAIC’s A Consumer’s Guide to Auto Insurance describes UM as protection for a policyholder hit by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver, and UIM as coverage for cases where the at-fault driver lacks enough insurance to cover the loss. The guide’s explanations do not override your state’s rules or your policy wording.
