Make sure you’re troubleshooting Motion assist
Google calls the motion-sickness feature Motion assist. It displays small bubbles along the screen edges that respond to vehicle movement, with the aim of helping reduce motion sickness while a passenger uses an Android device in a moving vehicle. It is different from Motion Sense, the gesture and proximity feature associated with Pixel 4. Google’s Motion Sense help page covers that separate feature.

If Motion assist doesn’t activate
Check Android and Google Play services
Google says Motion assist requires Android 17 or higher and updated Google Play services. If your phone does not meet those requirements, the feature may not be available. You can look for it by searching Settings for “Motion assist,” or open Settings > profile > All services > Personal & device safety > Motion assist. Labels can vary slightly by software version or locale. See Google’s Motion assist instructions.

Enable automatic starting
In Motion assist settings, turn on Start in a moving vehicle if you want the feature to start automatically. With that option enabled, Motion assist still may not start on every trip: Google cautions that “Your device may not always be able to detect when you’re in a moving vehicle.” A missed start by itself does not show that the phone has a hardware fault.

Add a manual Quick Settings control
A tile lets you start Motion assist yourself when automatic detection does not recognize a ride. In Motion assist settings, choose Add tile to Quick Settings. Alternatively, open Quick Settings, choose Edit, and add the Motion assist tile if it is listed. Use it to turn the feature on when needed rather than relying solely on vehicle detection.
Try general Pixel software troubleshooting
If the requirements and settings are correct but Motion assist remains unavailable, restart the phone and install available system and app updates. These are general Pixel troubleshooting steps, not Motion-assist-specific diagnostics. If Motion assist keeps appearing
Stop automatic starts on future trips
Open Motion assist settings and switch off Start in a moving vehicle if you do not want it to start automatically. This changes the behavior for future trips.
Dismiss it for the current session
When Motion assist starts automatically, Google says a silent notification appears. Tap that notification to turn Motion assist off for that session. Dismissing a current session does not disable automatic starts later; switch off Start in a moving vehicle to prevent those future starts.

Use the tile for occasional control
If you want to avoid automatic activation but still use the feature sometimes, leave auto-start off and use the Quick Settings tile when you choose. Motion assist also offers bubble appearance settings for opacity, color, shape, and randomization; changing those options does not affect automatic starting.

If Motion assist is still missing or behaving unexpectedly after you have checked eligibility, settings, updates, and the general troubleshooting steps, contact Google through the Pixel Help Center or the support entry in Settings. Google’s Motion assist guidance does not prescribe a dedicated cache-clearing, sensor-reset, or repair procedure, so avoid treating those as official fixes.
