For bottle-conditioning homebrew, use bottles specifically designed for packaged carbonated beer and follow the exact product’s carbonation or pressure rating. A stainless-steel or glass growler made to carry draft beer is not automatically suitable for conditioning. For transporting or serving finished beer, either material may work if the particular growler is designed for carbonated beer and its rating is adequate.
Material alone does not establish pressure suitability, carbonation retention, or safety. Choose by intended use, verified product specifications, closure, cleaning access, and light exposure.

First decide: conditioning bottles or a draft-beer growler?
Bottle conditioning means fermenting beer in sealed bottles so carbonation develops inside the package. Use a bottle intended for that purpose, and confirm its rating with the manufacturer or supplier. A growler used to transport finished draught beer is a separate vessel category; do not assume it can safely withstand conditioning pressure.

The Brewers Association advises using only growlers specifically designed for packaged carbonated beer and asking the supplier to verify that the pressure rating meets or exceeds the pressure from carbonation in the beer being filled. Its growler handling guidance applies to the specific container and use, not to every vessel made of a given material.

Glass vs. stainless steel at a glance
| Decision | Glass | Stainless steel |
|---|---|---|
| Bottle conditioning | Use a bottle sold for packaged carbonated beer and follow its product-specific rating. | A stainless growler is not automatically a conditioning vessel; verify that the specific product is intended and rated for the use. |
| Light protection | Amber or dark brown glass protects beer better from light than clear glass. | Opaque stainless steel blocks light. |
| Closure | Cap and neck finish must match. A cited amber longneck listing has a 26 mm crown-cap finish. | Lid and seal performance depend on the specific model. |
| Cleaning | Follow care instructions; the Brewers Association cautions against brushes with exposed metal parts on glass growlers. | Follow the maker’s care directions and consider access to the interior and removable parts. |
| Comparative carbonation retention | No general glass-versus-steel result is established by the sources cited here; do not assume one material holds carbonation longer. | |
For bottle conditioning, choose a rated bottle—not just a material
A product-specific example is MoreBeer’s Traditional Longneck Amber Glass Bottles: the listing specifies 12 oz capacity, a 26 mm crown-cap finish, and a rating up to 3 volumes of carbonation. That is a supplier specification for this product listing, not a universal rating for glass bottles or an independent comparison with steel.
Match crown caps and a capper to the bottle’s finish; do not assume caps or equipment fit other necks. MoreBeer’s home-brew starter kit instructions describe bottling with pry-off bottles, caps, and a capper. Before filling, inspect bottles for chips or other damage, and stay within the product’s stated limit.

- PRY-OFF LONG NECK STANDARD DESIGN: Amber Long Neck Glass Beer Bottles are the standard industry bottle commonly associated with a pry-off crown finish, long neck and narrow body. The beer bottle is designed to hold up to and including 3.0 volumes max.
- KEEPS BEER FRESH LONGER: The FastRack amber colored refillable beer bottles helps to keep your homebrew beer tasting fresh longer by providing protection from UV rays spoiling your beer.
- KEEPS BEER FRESH: The amber colored glass provides protection to light sensitive products such as hydrogen peroxide and sulfuric acid chemicals, oils, skin care, and pharmaceutical drugs, along with beer by blocking out UV rays for a fresh taste.
- PROUDLY MADE IN THE USA: FastRack bottles for beer manufactured in the United States tend to have a stronger, thicker glass than imported glass bottles. Unlike some brown beer bottles from China, United States.
- SATISFACTION GUARANTEE: At FastRack we pride ourselves on creating products that can be trusted by our customers. Buyer satisfaction is our top priority, maybe, sometimes accidents happen during shipping.
Light exposure: amber glass or opaque steel beats clear glass
Beer can be affected by light. The Brewers Association’s growler guidance says dark brown glass and opaque materials such as stainless steel or ceramic protect beer best from light-related “skunking”; clear glass does not provide that protection. This is a reason to prefer amber over clear glass, or to use an opaque vessel when light exposure matters—not a reason to treat all glass as equivalent.

The Brewers Association’s 2019 Draught Beer Quality Manual identifies glass, ceramic, stainless steel, and aluminum among materials used to transport draught beer in growlers. That list describes transport vessels; it does not establish that every growler is suitable for conditioning.

Closures and cleaning are product-specific
For bottles, verify that the cap type and capper match the bottle finish. For growlers, inspect the lid and seal according to the maker’s directions; no general retention advantage for either material is established here. Cleaning convenience depends on the opening, shape, and removable components as well as the material.
When cleaning a glass or ceramic growler, the Brewers Association cautions against brushes with exposed metal parts. For stainless-steel growlers, use the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions rather than assuming a generic care method suits every product.

How to make the choice
- For conditioning: Choose a bottle explicitly intended for packaged carbonated beer. Confirm its stated carbonation or pressure limit with the supplier.
- For carrying or serving finished draught beer: Select a growler whose maker specifies it is for packaged carbonated beer, then verify the rating is adequate for the beer being filled.
- For light protection: Prefer amber glass to clear glass, or choose an opaque stainless-steel vessel.
- Before filling: Check bottle or vessel condition, closure compatibility, and cleaning requirements for the exact product.
There is no supported blanket claim here that stainless steel retains carbonation longer, is always safer, or lasts longer than glass. The Brewers Association’s Draught Beer Quality Manual discusses multiple growler materials, but the available sources do not provide a controlled material comparison for carbonation retention, durability, cost, weight, or temperature performance.
