Rockstar has not announced GTA VI’s install size or a minimum free-space requirement. Until the official PlayStation and Xbox listings show a number, keep about 200 GB free on the storage where you will play—internal storage or a compatible expansion device—and leave additional headroom for updates. That is a planning estimate, not a confirmed requirement.
What is officially known about GTA VI storage?
There is no published install-size figure to quote yet. Rockstar’s support documentation and the reviewed PlayStation store listing identify the supported consoles but do not state how many gigabytes the game will occupy or how much free space installation will require.

| Question | What is established |
|---|---|
| Official install size | Not stated by Rockstar in the available support material or by the reviewed store listing. |
| Official minimum free space | Not stated. |
| Supported consoles | PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. |
| Preload timing | Rockstar support says preload begins at local midnight on November 12, 2026. |
| PS5 release date | The official PlayStation listing gives November 19, 2026. |
The November dates matter because the store pages can be updated when preload opens. Recheck the listing for your region at that point; its download-size field is more authoritative than any estimate circulating before launch.
How much free space should you reserve?
A current storage guide recommends having at least 200 GB free before preload. Treat that figure as a practical buffer for planning, not as Rockstar’s specification. It is intended to cover a large initial download while preserving room for installation overhead and early updates.

- Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
- With capacities ranging from 1TB to 4TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
- Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
- Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
Frequently repeated estimates of 150–200 GB are guesses. They may eventually turn out to be close, but no official GTA VI statistic supports them today. The sensible approach is to use 200 GB as a temporary floor and then follow the exact requirement shown by your console’s store or download screen.
Do not rely on the viral “676.7 GB” figure. The same guide identifies it as a hoax, and store checks in September 2026 still did not list an official size. Quoting that number as a requirement would mislead you into deleting far more than necessary.
Will GTA VI fit on your PS5 or Xbox Series S?
It will run on the supported current-generation consoles, but “fit” depends on the free space shown on your particular unit and on where you intend to install it. A game parked on an archive drive is not equivalent to a game installed on playable storage.

- Xbox Series X|S: Keep the installation on internal storage or a licensed Storage Expansion Card for direct play. A USB 3.x drive is useful for moving and storing games, but Series X|S titles generally need to be copied back to internal storage or an expansion card before launching.
Because the final download size is unknown, check your free-space figure rather than assuming a console model has enough room. Open the storage screen described below and use the 200 GB target as your pre-preload check.

2. Remove old captures
Open the PS5 Media Gallery and delete obsolete 4K video clips first. High-resolution recordings can consume substantial space without appearing in your games list, so checking captures is often faster than deleting several smaller games.
3. Archive games to USB storage
Move games you want to keep but do not play regularly to a USB drive. This preserves the installation for later copying and avoids downloading it again. The trade-off is important: PS5 games stored on USB cannot be played directly. When you want to resume one, copy it back to playable storage.

Use a USB drive as an archive, not as a way to expand the PS5’s directly playable capacity. Keep the drive connected or label it clearly so you know where each archived game resides.
4. Add a compatible internal SSD when deletion is not enough
For permanent playable capacity, install a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD that meets Sony’s PS5 requirements. The storage guide summarizes these requirements as:
- Capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB.
- A recommended sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster.
- A heatsink, while staying within the console’s permitted thickness and physical dimensions.
A 2 TB model is the guide’s practical suggestion for someone preparing for a large game, but the cited example was not independently tested. Check the manufacturer’s dimensions, heatsink arrangement and performance claims against Sony’s current installation instructions before buying.

An M.2 drive is different from a USB archive drive: once installed and formatted correctly, it becomes playable PS5 storage. Installation also requires opening the console’s expansion-bay cover, so follow the console manual and back up important data before starting.
Free up space on Xbox Series X|S
1. Inspect installed games and captures
- Open Settings.
- Choose System.
- Open Storage devices.
- Review installed games, apps and captures, then remove items you no longer need.
Deleting an unused game is the quickest way to reclaim playable capacity. If you want to preserve it for a later return, move it instead of deleting it.
2. Use a USB 3.x drive for games you are parking
Move games you plan to revisit to a USB 3.x drive. This is a cost-effective way to keep a library nearby and free the internal drive for GTA VI and other current-generation titles. Series X|S-optimized games still need to be copied back to internal storage or a licensed expansion card before they can be played.
The storage guide also cites Seagate’s Game Drive for Xbox as offering up to 5 TB of USB capacity and supporting Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Its role is consolidation and archiving; it is not a replacement for the console’s high-speed playable storage.
3. Add a licensed Storage Expansion Card for direct play
For capacity that behaves like the internal drive, use a licensed Xbox Storage Expansion Card. The guide reports offerings ranging from 1 TB to 4 TB from Seagate and 1 TB to 2 TB from SanDisk. Confirm the license, capacity and current availability for your region before purchase.

| PS5 internal SSD | Yes | PS5 | Built-in capacity varies by console; free space must be checked in Settings > Storage. | None | Primary playable location. |
| PS5 M.2 NVMe SSD with heatsink | Yes, when it meets Sony’s requirements | PS5 | 250 GB–8 TB; 5,500 MB/s or faster recommended | Open the expansion bay, install and format | Permanent playable expansion. |
| PS5 USB drive | No for PS5 games; copy back first | PS5 archive storage | Not stated in the available guidance | Connect and format | Low-cost parking of games and captures. |
| Xbox internal storage | Yes | Xbox Series X|S | Check Settings > System > Storage devices | None | Primary playable location. |

Prices and stock change, and the available evidence does not establish a current cost comparison. Capacity alone should not decide the purchase: direct play, console compatibility and transfer time are the practical differences.
A sensible preparation plan before November 12, 2026
- Check now: Open your console’s storage page and record the available free space.
- Remove obvious waste: Delete abandoned games and old 4K captures before buying hardware.
- Archive selectively: Move infrequently played titles to USB storage, remembering that current-generation games must be copied back to play.
- Choose playable expansion only if needed: Use a compliant PS5 M.2 SSD or an Xbox licensed expansion card when deletion and archiving will not leave about 200 GB free.
- Check again at preload: At local midnight on November 12, open the official store listing for your region and follow its displayed size and free-space requirement.
- Leave update headroom: Do not fill the drive to the last few gigabytes after installation; future patches may require additional temporary space.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing archive capacity with playable capacity
A large USB drive can hold many games but does not make PS5 or Xbox Series X|S titles playable from that drive. Plan for a copy-back operation or buy the platform-specific expansion hardware.
Treating an estimate as a requirement
The 200 GB figure is a cautious planning target. It is not a confirmed download size, and it does not guarantee that installation will succeed if Rockstar’s final listing requires more. Conversely, you may not need all 200 GB if the official package is smaller.
The Tool Desk

Capacity alone is insufficient. Verify PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe support, the recommended 5,500 MB/s read performance and heatsink dimensions against Sony’s requirements. A drive that fits physically but misses the performance or thickness limits is a poor choice.
Believing the 676.7 GB hoax
No official listing supports that number. Wait for the console store’s own figure instead of planning around a viral screenshot or post.
Bottom line
There is still no official GTA VI storage number. Keep roughly 200 GB free as a temporary, update-conscious target, clean unused games and captures first, and use USB drives only for archiving. If you need to play more current-generation games without moving them back and forth, add a compliant PS5 M.2 SSD or an Xbox licensed Storage Expansion Card. Confirm the final requirement on the official listing when preload starts on November 12, 2026.
