Use the game’s current requirement as your starting point
The practical minimum is the space the PS5 or the game’s current store listing says is required for that title. Game installation requirements vary and can change as updates arrive, so an old estimate from a review, forum post, or earlier download may no longer match what your console needs now.

Check how much space is available at Settings > Storage. Compare the console’s available space with the requirement shown for the game you are trying to install. If the console reports insufficient space, free more room before retrying rather than relying on a generic “large game” estimate.
Treat the displayed requirement as a minimum for the current installation, not as a promise that the game will never need more room. Updates and other console data can affect available capacity later. Keeping extra room where practical can make those changes easier to accommodate, but there is no official Sony number for how much extra every player should reserve.

Why there is no one-size-fits-all free-space number
“A large game” is not a single storage category with a standard PS5 allocation. The requirement depends on the particular title and can change when its content is updated. A fixed recommendation such as “always leave 100 GB free” would therefore be a personal rule of thumb, not a Sony requirement supported by its storage guidance.
The useful decision is specific to your console and the game you want to install: look up that game’s current requirement, check the free-space figure in Settings, and make room for the difference. If you regularly install several games or want room for future updates, keeping a larger margin is a convenience choice. Sony does not establish a universal margin for that choice.

How to check space and make room
- Check available capacity. On the PS5, open Settings > Storage and review the available space.
- Check the title’s current requirement. Use the requirement displayed on the console or in the game’s current store listing. Do not assume an older figure is still current.
- Choose what to remove or move. Delete games or applications you no longer need, or move eligible content to storage that suits how you use it. The options and trade-offs are described below.
- Recheck available space. Return to Settings > Storage and confirm that the console has enough room for the title’s displayed requirement before trying again.
Sony says purchased content can be downloaded again from your game library after it has been deleted. That makes removing a game a reasonable way to solve a one-time shortage if you are willing to install it again when you want to play. Deleting it is not the same as keeping it ready to launch: you will need to redownload it to play.

These options solve different problems. Deletion costs nothing in extra hardware but means reinstalling later. USB extended storage is useful for keeping games in an archive, not for playing PS5 games directly from that location. Adding a compatible M.2 SSD expands storage while allowing PS5 games to run from that added storage.

When USB extended storage is enough
USB extended storage can hold PS5 game data, but it does not function as a place from which to play those PS5 games. To play one, move it back to the PS5’s console storage or to an M.2 SSD. That makes USB most suitable for titles you want to retain but do not need to launch immediately.
Sony’s support page lists USB extended storage capacities from 250 GB minimum to 8 TB maximum. Those are supported capacity limits, not a recommendation for how much free space to leave on the console, and they do not change the requirement to move a PS5 game back before playing it.

If you are deciding whether USB storage will solve your problem, ask whether your priority is keeping a collection available for later or playing its games without a transfer step. For the former, it can help. For the latter, an M.2 SSD is the direct add-on option covered by Sony’s guidance.

When an M.2 SSD is the better expansion
A compatible M.2 SSD can store, download, and run PS5 games. It is the more suitable option if you repeatedly run short of space and want to keep more games playable without moving them back from USB storage. Sony’s product page gives an M.2 expansion capacity of up to 8 TB; this is a capacity limit, not a prescribed free-space buffer.

Compatibility matters. Sony’s current M.2 guidance calls for an M.2 NVMe SSD using PCIe Gen4 x4, recommends a sequential read speed of at least 5500 MB/s, and requires an effective cooling structure. Sony also specifies supported drive form factors and size limits that include the heatsink. Check the current official requirements and the complete drive-and-heatsink dimensions before buying: a drive’s advertised capacity or speed alone does not establish that it will fit.
Sony cautions that meeting the listed specifications does not guarantee that every third-party drive will work. Do not rely on a general claim that an SSD is “fast enough” without checking the full current requirements, including its cooling arrangement and dimensions.
Common mistakes when estimating PS5 space
- Using an old game-size estimate. Requirements can change with updates. Check the current console or store listing for the title you intend to install.
- Treating a suggested buffer as an official rule. Sony’s reviewed storage guidance does not prescribe a universal amount of spare space for large games. Any fixed extra number is a personal planning choice.
- Assuming a PS5 game can launch from USB extended storage. It must be moved to console storage or M.2 storage before play.
- Buying an M.2 drive based on capacity alone. The interface, speed guidance, cooling structure, and drive-plus-heatsink dimensions all matter, and Sony does not guarantee every drive that meets listed specifications.
- Deleting a game without accounting for reinstalling it. Purchased content can be downloaded again from the library, but deleting it does not leave it ready to play on the console.
A simple rule for a large PS5 game
Use the title’s current displayed storage requirement as the minimum amount of space to make available. Check your free capacity in Settings > Storage. If you want extra breathing room for updates or other console data, keep more space free according to your own library and habits; Sony does not set a universal number. For a one-off shortage, delete games you can reinstall or archive PS5 games on USB and transfer them back when needed. If running out of space is recurring and you want to play more stored games without that transfer, check Sony’s current M.2 requirements before choosing an SSD.
