Use the installation requirement shown for the specific game as your starting point, then aim to have about twice that amount free before installing. A game showing 100GB therefore deserves roughly 200GB of available PS5 storage as a practical target. Sony describes this as an approximate installation reserve, not a universal formula, so the requirement on the current install screen remains the final authority.
The short answer: plan around twice the listed requirement
PS5 game sizes are not interchangeable. One title may ask for 25GB or more, while another can exceed 100GB. The number that matters first is the free-space figure shown by the game’s current store page, publisher instructions, or installation screen.

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s official error-code guidance explains the extra margin: “When installing data, it may be necessary to reserve approximately twice the free space required.” In practical terms, multiply the title’s displayed requirement by about two before pressing Install. This is a planning rule, not a promise that every installation will consume exactly double the game’s final size.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSony does not publish one fixed extra-gigabyte allowance for every game. The reserve is tied to the installation in progress and is described as approximate. Patches, optional content and changes to a title’s current package can also make an older size estimate less useful. If the console’s own message disagrees with a rule of thumb, follow the console.

What the two-times rule looks like in real examples
The calculation is easiest when the title’s requirement is stated clearly. These examples apply the approximate reserve to figures documented by publishers or platform guidance.
| Situation | Published or displayed requirement | Practical free-space target | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| New game showing 100GB | 100GB | About 200GB | Planning estimate based on Sony’s approximate-reserve wording |
| Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War at launch | 133GB | About 266GB | Activision launch guidance from 2020; the current package may differ |
| A PS5 title listed by SEGA Customer Support | 25GB or more | About 50GB or more | SEGA’s page does not state a year for the figure |
| PS5 system-software update | Approximately 1.1GB | Keep at least that much available, with additional headroom preferred | Sony’s system-software instructions give this approximate update requirement |
The last row is not a game-install formula. It shows why a drive kept exactly at its game threshold can still fail later when system software needs working space.
Why the console can ask for more room than the game appears to need
An installation is a process, not a single file copy. The console may need temporary working space while it places data, checks the package and completes the installation. Sony’s wording deliberately says “may be necessary” and “approximately,” so it does not promise one identical reserve for every title or explain a single fixed allocation that applies across all releases.

The size shown for a game is therefore not a guarantee that the console can begin with only that many free gigabytes. A nearly full drive can reject an installation even when its remaining capacity appears to match the headline download size. The reserve is released or converted to the installed data as the process finishes; it is not an extra permanent copy that you should expect to remain after every installation.
Check the title-specific requirement before deleting anything
Use the current listing or install screen
Look at the game’s present PS5 listing or the requirement presented when you start the download. Publisher launch articles can be useful context, but they can age as patches and content packages change. The console’s current message has the most direct relationship to the installation you are attempting.
Distinguish the base game from optional content
Some supported games let you remove optional modes or content. If the title offers that choice, install only what you need before making room for a complete package. Do not assume that every game exposes modular installation; the available choices are title-specific.

Allow for updates after the first install
A title that fits today may need additional space for a later patch. Sony documents approximately 1.1GB of free space for a system-software update, and game patches can have their own requirements. Leaving a buffer above the calculated installation target reduces the chance that the next update becomes an emergency deletion exercise.

- Review the console’s storage-management controls. Use the PS5 storage tools to see which games and data occupy the internal drive and identify the largest items first.
- Remove games you can redownload. Deleting an installed game removes its local files, not your ownership. You can download it again later, although doing so consumes time and bandwidth.
- Check for optional modes or language packs. Where the game provides separate install choices, remove components you do not use rather than deleting the entire title.
- Preserve saves separately from the game package. Treat saved progress as a different category of data when reviewing what can be removed; do not delete anything you still need simply because its name resembles the game installation.
- Retry only after the free-space figure has changed. Confirm the storage total again, then restart the installation. If the console still reports insufficient space, use the new requirement it displays instead of relying on an earlier estimate.
This approach costs no hardware money, but reinstalling later takes time and uses your connection’s data allowance. It is best when you rotate through a small number of games or need space for one immediate installation.
USB extended storage: useful archive, not a launch location for PS5 games
Sony supports USB extended storage as a way to keep PS5 game data off the internal drive. The important limitation is playability: PS5 games stored there must be copied back to the console’s internal storage or a compatible internal M.2 SSD before you can play them.

When USB storage makes sense
- You want to keep a large game installed without using internal capacity every day.
- You have a reliable USB drive and would rather copy a title back than download it again.
- Your internet connection makes repeated redownloads slow or expensive.
What to expect operationally
USB storage is an archive workflow. Copy the game to the extended drive when you need to clear internal space, then copy it back before launching. The copy takes time, so it is not equivalent to adding always-available internal capacity. Compare the drive’s usable capacity with the number and size of games you actually keep in rotation; the printed capacity is not the same as space available for game data.
Internal M.2 SSD: the direct expansion path for playable PS5 games
A compatible internal M.2 SSD can download, copy and launch PS5 games without the copy-back step required by USB extended storage. Sony’s supported range is 250GB to 4TB, using a PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe M.2 drive that fits the console’s dimensional and heat-dissipation limits.
Compatibility checks that matter
- Interface: PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe is the supported type identified by Sony.
- Capacity: Supported drives range from 250GB through 4TB.
- Physical fit: The module must meet Sony’s specified size limits.
- Thermal design: The drive and its heatsink must stay within Sony’s heat-dissipation requirements.
Check Sony’s current compatibility instructions before purchasing because a drive that has the right capacity can still be unsuitable if its dimensions or thermal hardware fall outside the limits. An M.2 upgrade costs more than deleting and redownloading, but it is the most convenient option when you regularly keep several PS5 games installed.

Choosing the right remedy for your situation
| Your situation | Most suitable response | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| You need room for one new game today | Delete or move a game you can redownload | No hardware cost, but reinstalling later uses time and bandwidth |
| You want to archive several large PS5 games | Use USB extended storage | Each archived PS5 game must be copied back before play |
| You routinely keep many PS5 games ready to launch | Install a compatible internal M.2 SSD | Requires purchase, installation and compliance with Sony’s specifications |
| Your free space is just above the download size | Clear more room before starting | Avoids an installation failure caused by the approximate reserve |
Capacity is only one part of the decision. A larger drive is useful only to the extent that its usable space covers the games you keep installed. Convenience, download speed and the need to launch directly from the storage location can matter more than the headline terabyte figure.
Troubleshooting an installation that says there is not enough space
The free-space number matches the game’s advertised size
That is not necessarily enough. Apply the approximate reserve Sony describes, then retry. A 100GB requirement may need roughly 200GB available for the installation to begin.
You freed space but the error remains
Recheck the storage total after deletion or moving data. If the console presents a revised requirement, use that current number. Also account for the approximately 1.1GB Sony identifies for a system-software update if an update is waiting.
The game is on USB extended storage
Move the PS5 game back to internal storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before attempting to play it. USB extended storage can hold the data, but it is not the play location for PS5 games under Sony’s instructions.
An older publisher figure conflicts with the console
Use the console’s current install screen. The 133GB figure published for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War in 2020 is a historical launch reference, not a guarantee for the game’s present package. Requirements can change as content and patches change.
Quick Recap
A practical storage routine for new releases
- Check the title-specific figure. Record the number shown for the PS5 version you intend to install.
- Plan approximately twice that amount. Treat the result as a safety target derived from Sony’s approximate-reserve guidance, not as a universal guarantee.
- Keep update headroom. Leave room beyond the installation target so a system-software update, including Sony’s approximately 1.1GB example, does not immediately fill the drive.
- Choose a remedy before the download starts. Delete and redownload for a no-cost solution, archive to USB when copying later is acceptable, or add a compatible M.2 SSD for direct playability.
- Let the console’s current message overrule estimates. If the install screen requests more space, follow it; if it requests less, the title-specific figure remains the better guide than a generic internet number.
What to remember
- The game’s own current installation requirement is the baseline.
- Sony says an installation may need approximately twice the required free space, so a 100GB listing merits about 200GB available as a practical target.
- There is no single Sony-published extra-gigabyte figure that applies to every game.
- USB extended storage archives PS5 games; internal storage or a compatible M.2 SSD is required to play them.
- Sony supports compatible PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe M.2 SSDs from 250GB to 4TB within its size and heat-dissipation limits.
- Keep additional headroom for system software and changing game packages.
