Rockstar has not announced an official installation or download size for Grand Theft Auto VI. As of October 20, 2026, the company’s support and product pages confirm the platforms and release date, but they do not state a required number of gigabytes. Any figure circulating online is an estimate until a PlayStation Store or Xbox Store preload listing shows the final package.
GTA VI launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. The physical edition does not avoid the download: Rockstar says its box contains a code for the digital game.

That means there is no responsible way to answer “How many GB will GTA 6 be?” with a number today. A rumor can be close, but it is not a capacity requirement. The first authoritative figure should appear when a storefront exposes the downloadable package or preload information.
Why a download size and a free-space requirement are different
Storefronts can show several related measurements. The download package is the data transferred from the internet. The installed size is the space occupied after installation. A console may also require temporary working space while it downloads, decrypts, verifies, and installs files, and a launch-day patch can change the final footprint.

Until the listing is live, none of those values is known for GTA VI. Do not treat a reported “file size” as a guaranteed amount of free space, and do not assume that a physical disc would supply all of the game files. Rockstar’s stated download-code arrangement makes the physical edition a redemption-and-download purchase rather than an offline installation.
How to prepare a PS5
Check the console’s available space
On PS5, open Settings > Storage to see the free space on Console Storage and any installed M.2 SSD. Before preload day, remove games you no longer play or move them to storage that supports launching them. Keep the amount shown by the GTA VI listing available, plus sensible headroom for the installation process and updates; the exact headroom cannot be calculated until Sony publishes the requirement.
Add an M.2 NVMe drive when internal space is tight
Sony supports an internal M.2 SSD for expanding PS5 storage. Its published requirements include a PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe drive; the complete Sony compatibility, size, cooling, and performance requirements should be checked before buying a model. Once installed and formatted by the console, the added drive can be used to download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games.
A product described as a PS5 2TB M.2 NVMe SSD is therefore a capacity option, not evidence that GTA VI requires 2TB. Two terabytes may be useful for a library that includes several large PS5 games, but the game’s own requirement could be lower or higher. Choose the drive for your overall library and budget, then verify that its specifications meet Sony’s current support page.

Install and select the expansion location
- Turn off the PS5 completely, unplug it, and install the compatible M.2 drive according to Sony’s hardware instructions. Do not install a drive that does not meet the required interface, dimensions, or cooling provisions.
- Restart the console. PS5 will prompt you to format a newly detected M.2 SSD; formatting erases the drive.
- Use Settings > Storage > Installation Location to choose where new PS5 and PS4 games are saved. You can also move an existing title from Console Storage to the M.2 SSD through the game’s storage options.
- When the GTA VI preload appears, read the listing’s required free-space figure and select the destination with enough room.
The important distinction is that a compatible internal M.2 drive can run PS5 games directly. It is not merely an archive that requires moving the game back before you can play.
How to prepare an Xbox Series X or Series S
Use the dedicated expansion-card slot for playable capacity
Xbox Series X|S supports proprietary Storage Expansion Cards that plug into the console’s dedicated expansion port. Xbox describes these cards as providing additional game storage at the same performance as the internal storage, so Series X|S games can be kept and played from the card rather than being moved back to the internal drive.
Seagate’s Xbox Series X|S documentation lists cards in 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities. Those are product capacities, not a forecast of GTA VI’s size. Availability and pricing vary by region, model, and date, so check the exact card and current price before ordering.

- Open My games & apps > Manage > Free up space to identify unused games, duplicate add-ons, and captures that can be removed.
- In Settings > System > Storage devices, confirm the internal drive and any connected expansion card are recognized.
- Set the preferred installation location in the storage settings if you want new games to go to the card automatically. You can change the destination for an individual installation when the preload is offered.
- When the GTA VI listing becomes available, follow the displayed free-space requirement rather than relying on a social-media estimate.
A card is the straightforward Xbox solution when the internal drive is crowded. Because the card is designed for Series X|S performance, it is more suitable for keeping a current-generation game playable than treating ordinary external storage as the default destination.

This comparison is about preparing your console, not assigning a size to GTA VI. Buy extra capacity because your library needs it, not because an unverified post claims a particular GTA VI number.
What the physical edition changes—and what it does not
Rockstar states that the physical version contains a download code usable for the digital download of the game. You will still need to redeem that code, connect the console to the internet, download the software, and reserve local storage for installation. The box may be preferable for resale or collecting, but it should not be treated as a way to bypass a large download or a storage requirement.
The same storage question applies to a digital pre-order. The practical difference is how you obtain the license, not whether the console needs room for the installed game.

Check the listing on the storefront for the console version you own. A PS5 listing and an Xbox listing can show different package details, and the requirement can change if the publisher updates the build before launch. Read the number beside the installation or preload information, not a screenshot with no date or platform label.

On preload day, allow the console to finish downloading and installing before deleting additional games. If the listing reports a required amount larger than the space you have, the reliable fixes are to uninstall an unused title, move compatible games to the installed expansion device, or add the appropriate PS5 M.2 SSD or Xbox expansion card. Do not interrupt an installation merely because the progress bar appears to have downloaded the advertised package; verification and unpacking can continue afterward.

Buying hardware because of a rumor
No confirmed GTA VI capacity is available as of October 20, 2026. A headline claiming an exact number may be quoting a leak, a prediction, or a different measurement. Treat it as unverified until Rockstar or the relevant console storefront publishes the requirement.
Assuming 2TB is mandatory
Two terabytes is one available expansion capacity, not a GTA VI specification. A smaller compatible drive may be sufficient for the game and your existing library; a larger one may be worthwhile if you keep many large titles installed.

Choosing an incompatible PS5 drive
PS5 M.2 support is conditional. Check Sony’s full requirements, including the PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe interface and the physical and cooling specifications, before purchase. A drive that fits physically but misses the supported specification should not be assumed to work.

Expecting every external device to run Series games
For Xbox Series X|S, the documented expansion path for additional storage with internal-drive performance is the dedicated Storage Expansion Card. Confirm that a device is an Xbox Series X|S expansion card before expecting to launch the game from it.
Forgetting the code in a physical box
A physical GTAVI edition with a download code still depends on code redemption, an internet download, and enough local space. Plan for those requirements even if you prefer boxed games.
Preload-day checklist
- Confirm that the console is a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S; those are the launch platforms identified by Rockstar.
- Install pending system updates and sign in to the account that owns the pre-order or download code.
- Open the console’s storage screen and record the free space before starting.
- On PS5, verify that any M.2 SSD is installed, formatted, and recognized under Storage.
- On Xbox, verify that the Storage Expansion Card appears under Storage devices.
- Read the platform listing’s exact installation requirement when preload opens.
- Choose the destination with enough free space and leave the console connected until installation and verification finish.
- Keep the listing’s platform and date with any number you share; a bare figure without those details is not a dependable specification.
Rockstar’s announced November 19, 2026 launch date gives players a target for preparation, but it does not turn an estimate into an official storage requirement. The only dependable GTA VI number will be the one published for your console when the final package is available.
