Plan for at least about 135 GB of free PS5 storage for Phantom Blade Zero, but do not treat that number as final. A third-party report reproduced a PlayStation Store listing showing a 134.857 GB download. That is a provisional listing figure, not a verified post-launch installed size. The game is scheduled for October 29, 2026, so patches, language packs and regional packaging may change the space required when you actually install it.
Before downloading, check Settings → Storage on your PS5 and leave more free capacity than the reported download figure. If the console is short on space, delete finished games and unneeded media, archive inactive PS5 games to USB extended storage, or add a compatible internal M.2 NVMe SSD. The official PlayStation Store page is the best place to recheck the live requirement after release.

What is the reported Phantom Blade Zero file size?
The only concrete pre-release figure currently available is 134.857 GB, reproduced from a PlayStation listing by Phantom Blade Zero Guide. Because that number comes from a third-party report of a store listing, describe it as about 135 GB, not as the game’s confirmed installed size. The report does not establish how much space the final installation, day-one patch, later updates or optional language data will consume.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use the reported number as a planning baseline:
- It indicates a download in the neighborhood of 135 GB.
- It is not proof of the final occupied space on the internal drive.
- It does not include a guaranteed allowance for updates, temporary installation files or every language pack.
- The live store listing can differ by region, edition and release state.
Check the store listing again immediately before pressing Download, and check it again after launch if an update is offered.
How much free space should you leave on PS5?
Sony does not publish a universal “extra buffer” number for every PS5 game. Installation can require temporary working space in addition to the package that remains after installation, and updates can need room while a new version is copied into place. For that reason, having exactly 134.857 GB available is an avoidable risk.
Instead, treat 135 GB as the minimum planning figure and create a comfortable margin beyond it. The exact margin depends on the size of the launch patch and later updates, which were not established before release. A console that reports only slightly more than 135 GB free may still reject the installation even though the download appears to fit.

- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Storage.
- Review the free-space figure and the category breakdown for games and apps, saved data, screenshots and video clips, and other system data.
- Compare the available space with the live Phantom Blade Zero listing rather than relying on the pre-release 134.857 GB report.
Do not count cloud storage or an attached USB drive as if it were free internal space. The game must be installed on the console’s internal storage or on a compatible internal M.2 SSD before it can run.
Free space safely before installing
1. Remove games you have finished
Large game installations are normally the fastest way to recover capacity. In Settings → Storage → Console Storage → Games and Apps, sort or inspect the list, select a game you no longer need, press the options button and choose Delete. Deleting the application does not normally delete its save data, but verify your save-data settings before confirming and keep a backup of anything important.

You can redownload a purchased digital game from your Game Library later. A disc-based game can also be reinstalled from its disc, although updates may need to be downloaded again. Deleting an application is therefore different from deleting progress: check the on-screen category and selection carefully.
2. Clean screenshots and video clips
Long gameplay recordings and high-resolution captures can quietly consume tens of gigabytes. Go to Settings → Storage → Console Storage → Media Gallery, select unwanted screenshots or clips and delete them. Export anything you want to keep to another device first. If automatic capture settings are producing files you never use, review the PS5’s capture and broadcast settings after cleanup.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →3. Review saved data instead of deleting it casually
Saved games are usually much smaller than installations, but they are valuable and may be the only local copy of progress. Use Settings → Saved Data and Game/App Settings to review PS5 and PS4 saved data. If you subscribe to a service that synchronizes saves, allow the latest data to upload and confirm the timestamp before removing a local copy. A save backup is not a substitute for checking that the correct profile and game are selected.
4. Empty unnecessary system and miscellaneous data
The Storage screen may show space under other categories that cannot be reduced by deleting one obvious game. Restarting the console after a large deletion can allow the displayed free-space figure to refresh. Keep the PS5 system software current, and do not remove system files through unofficial utilities or by interrupting an installation.
Can you move PS5 games to an external hard drive?
Yes, but an external USB drive is primarily an archive for PS5 games. Sony’s storage guidance explains that PS5 games can be moved to compatible USB extended storage to free internal space, but they must be copied back to the PS5’s internal storage or an installed M.2 SSD before you can launch them. PS4 games can run directly from USB extended storage.

That makes USB storage useful when you want to keep a large library without redownloading every title. It does not turn an inexpensive external drive into extra launch-ready PS5 capacity.

- Connect a compatible USB extended-storage drive to the PS5. Use a direct console connection rather than an unpowered hub.
- Open Settings → Storage → Console Storage → Games and Apps.
- Select the game, choose Move or Move to USB Extended Storage, and confirm.
- Wait for the transfer to finish before disconnecting the drive.
To play that PS5 game later, open the same storage-management area, select the title on USB extended storage and choose the option to move or copy it back to console storage. Transfer time varies with the drive and the amount of data.
Read Sony’s current compatibility and setup instructions before buying or formatting a drive: Storage solutions for PS5 and PS4. Formatting a drive as USB extended storage erases its existing contents, so copy personal files elsewhere first.
Permanent expansion: install an internal M.2 NVMe SSD
If you regularly run out of room, an internal M.2 SSD is the option that adds playable capacity without moving games back and forth. Sony supports compatible PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe drives in the PS5’s expansion bay. The SSD must have a heatsink, either integrated or fitted separately, that stays within Sony’s dimensional limits.
Sony’s published guidance lists these requirements; confirm the current instructions for your exact PS5 model before installation:

| Specification | Sony’s published guidance | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Interface | PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe M.2 | A SATA M.2 drive or a different PCIe generation is not the supported class for the PS5 expansion bay. |
| Capacity | 250 GB to 8 TB | The drive must fall within the supported capacity range. |
| Supported form factors | M.2 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110 | The number identifies the module’s width and length; the console bay must accommodate the chosen size. |
| Sequential read performance | 5,500 MB/s or faster is Sony’s recommended target | A higher advertised speed does not override the physical and interface requirements. |
| Maximum module width | 22 mm | Wider modules are outside the bay’s supported width. |
| Maximum total length | 110 mm | The module and its mounting position must fit the bay. |
| Maximum total height | 11.25 mm including the heatsink | Excessive heatsink height can prevent the cover from closing or interfere with the console. |
The complete installation and safety details are in Sony Interactive Entertainment’s M.2 SSD installation guide. Measurements must include the heatsink, not just the bare storage module. Check the seller’s specification drawing, because a drive that meets the interface and capacity requirements can still fail the height or width limit once cooled.
How to choose a PS5-compatible M.2 SSD
- Confirm the interface: look for PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, not merely “M.2.”
- Check capacity: choose between 250 GB and 8 TB, with enough room for several large games if you are solving a recurring capacity problem.
- Verify the physical size: match the 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110 form factor and stay within 22 mm width and 110 mm length.
- Include cooling in the measurement: total height, including the heatsink, must not exceed 11.25 mm.
- Check read-speed guidance: Sony recommends 5,500 MB/s or faster sequential reading, but compatibility also depends on every other requirement.
- Look for a clear PS5 compatibility statement: treat marketing language as a starting point and compare the complete specification with Sony’s page.
Install and format the SSD
- Back up important saves and shut down the PS5 completely; do not work on a console that is in Rest Mode.
- Disconnect the power cable and follow the model-specific cover-removal and expansion-bay instructions in Sony’s manual.
- Insert the M.2 drive at the correct angle, secure it with the supplied spacer and screw, and ensure the heatsink does not obstruct the cover.
- Reassemble the console, reconnect it and start the PS5.
- When prompted, format the drive as M.2 storage. Formatting erases the drive, so a new SSD should contain no files you need.
- After formatting, use Settings → Storage to confirm the added capacity and choose where new games and applications should be installed.
If the PS5 refuses to format the drive, reports that its read speed is insufficient or cannot detect it, turn the console off and recheck seating, the spacer position, the heatsink dimensions and the drive’s interface. Do not force the module into the slot. A drive that is physically incompatible should be returned rather than modified.

Launch updates
A game may ship with a day-one patch that changes files after the store package was measured. The patch can require additional temporary room while it installs, even if the final update is smaller than the original download.
Language and regional data
Store listings can vary by region and edition. Optional voice-over or text languages may add data, while a particular region may package content differently. Compare the listing for the account’s actual country or region.

Releases and patches after launch
Post-launch updates can increase or sometimes reorganize the installed footprint. Recheck the listing and the console’s download screen instead of assuming the pre-release number remains valid.

A practical decision guide
| Your situation | Best first move | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| You need roughly 135 GB once | Delete completed games and media, then check Storage again. | Free space may be consumed again by future releases. |
| You want to keep games but rarely play them | Move PS5 games to USB extended storage. | They must be copied back before launching; PS4 games can run from USB. |
| You frequently install large PS5 games | Add a compliant internal M.2 NVMe SSD. | It requires careful model, size, heatsink and interface checks. |
| You are about to install Phantom Blade Zero | Check the live store listing and leave a margin above the reported 134.857 GB. | The final installed, update and language-pack sizes were not established before release. |
Troubleshooting an installation that will not start
The PS5 says there is not enough space
Open Settings → Storage and check console storage, not just the combined capacity shown by connected devices. Delete or move a large title, remove captures, empty any pending deletion, restart the console and check the figure again. Then retry from the current regional store listing.
The download stops near completion
Leave additional room for temporary installation files and updates. Pause other downloads, verify the network connection, and avoid powering off while the system is applying the package. If the problem persists after freeing space, cancel the download and start it again from the game hub or Game Library.
A moved game will not launch from USB
That behavior is expected for PS5 games. Move or copy the game from USB extended storage back to console storage or the internal M.2 SSD, then launch it from the home screen. A PS4 version can run directly from compatible USB extended storage.
The M.2 SSD is not recognized
Power down fully, reseat the module and verify that the drive is PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, within the 250 GB–8 TB range, and fitted with a heatsink that stays within Sony’s width, length and height limits. If the specification is correct and the console still cannot detect it, consult the drive manufacturer and Sony support rather than repeatedly formatting it.
Bottom line
Reserve more than 135 GB for Phantom Blade Zero, because the often-quoted 134.857 GB is a provisional third-party report of a store listing rather than a final installed-size measurement. The game is scheduled for October 29, 2026; check the live listing at launch. For a one-time cleanup, remove finished games and captures or archive PS5 titles to USB. For lasting playable capacity, install a Sony-compatible PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe SSD with the required capacity, speed, form factor and heatsink dimensions.
