As of October 19, 2026, Rockstar and Sony list the game for PS5 (and PS5 Pro) with a November 19, 2026 release date, but neither official page gives a download or installed-size figure. Any exact gigabyte number circulating before the PlayStation Store pre-load listing is an estimate, not a requirement.
The reliable answer will appear when pre-loading opens: use the PlayStation Store’s required-free-space figure, then leave additional room for patches and normal system data. If your internal storage is tight, a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD is the expansion you can play GTA VI from directly. A USB extended-storage drive can archive the game, but PS5 games must be copied back before they will run.

What is confirmed about GTA VI’s PS5 storage requirement?
No official gigabyte figure yet
Rockstar’s official GTA VI page confirms PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions and a November 19, 2026 release. Sony’s official game page lists PS5 and PS5 Pro for the same date. Neither page states the game’s download size, installed size, or day-one patch size.
That means claims such as “GTA VI is exactly X GB” should be treated as speculation until Rockstar, Sony, or the PlayStation Store publishes a number. A file-size estimate can change between a preview build and the launch build, and a download can require more temporary free space than the final installed footprint.

The pre-load listing is the source of truth
When pre-loading becomes available, open GTA VI’s PlayStation Store listing on your console or the web and check the required free-space figure shown there. That number supersedes every earlier estimate for the launch build. Keep extra capacity beyond the displayed requirement for updates, temporary installation files, saved data and other system activity; do not fill an SSD to its last few gigabytes.
The listing may also distinguish a download size from the space needed during installation. Follow the larger requirement if both appear. If Rockstar or Sony changes the requirement after launch, the game’s update prompt and the console’s storage screen become the next practical references.
How much usable space does a PS5 provide?
The capacity printed on a console is not the same as space available for games. The operating system and reserved system areas occupy part of the internal drive, so the free-space number on your own PS5 is the one that matters.

Installed games, captures, applications and saved data all compete for the same internal space. Delete or move games you no longer play only after checking that cloud or USB backups are available if you need them later. Do not assume that an “825GB” or “1TB” label leaves that amount free for one new game.

Which PS5 expansion can run GTA VI directly?
M.2 NVMe SSD: the playable expansion
Sony supports an internal expansion slot for a compatible PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe M.2 SSD. Games installed on that added SSD can be downloaded, copied and launched there, including PS5 games. This is the practical solution if GTA VI will not fit alongside the library you want to keep installed.

Capacity alone does not make an SSD suitable. A very large drive with the wrong interface, no cooling or an over-thick heatsink can fail the compatibility check even if its price looks attractive.
How to install and format an M.2 drive
- Back up important data. Sync saves to your PlayStation account or copy them according to your normal backup plan before opening the console.
- Shut the PS5 down completely. Unplug it after the power indicator has stopped flashing and allow the console to cool.
- Install the SSD in the expansion bay. Remove the appropriate cover, secure the drive at its supported length, and fit the heatsink so the cover can close without pressure. Follow the console model’s hardware guide for the exact cover and screw locations.
- Reconnect and start the console. The PS5 should detect an unformatted expansion drive and offer to format it. Formatting erases the SSD.
- Confirm the result. Go to Settings > Storage and verify the new M.2 storage capacity.
- Set an installation location if desired. In Settings > Storage > Installation Location, choose where new PS5 or PS4 games should be installed. You can also move an existing title from Console Storage to M.2 SSD through the game’s options in the storage screen.
After installation, download GTA VI to the M.2 drive or move it there from Console Storage. It will launch from the M.2 drive without a copy-back step.

USB extended storage is mainly an archive
Sony’s SuperSpeed USB extended storage supports capacities from 250GB to 8TB. It is useful for storing games you are not currently playing and freeing internal or M.2 space, but it has a decisive limitation: PS5 games cannot be played directly from USB extended storage.

Sony’s wording is explicit: “PS5 games can’t be played directly from USB extended storage, so make sure to copy PS5 game data back to your console storage when you want to play the game again.” PS4 games stored on compatible USB extended storage can run directly from that drive.
What playing an archived PS5 game involves
- Connect the formatted SuperSpeed USB drive to the PS5 directly, not through a USB hub.
- Open Settings > Storage and choose USB Extended Storage to confirm that the console recognizes it.
- Move GTA VI or another PS5 title to the USB drive when you need to make room. The game remains installed there, but its PS5 version is not playable from that location.
- When you want to play, select the title and choose the option to copy it back to Console Storage or the M.2 SSD.
- Wait for the copy to finish before launching. Copy time depends on the drive, USB connection and amount of data.
USB is therefore a good low-cost archive for a large library or for reinstall avoidance, but it is inconvenient if you expect to switch into GTA VI frequently. An M.2 SSD avoids that transfer.
Should you buy a 1TB or 2TB M.2 SSD for GTA VI?
No capacity is officially required for GTA VI yet, so a 1TB or 2TB recommendation is a planning choice, not a claim about the game’s final size. The right choice depends on how many other PS5 games you keep installed and whether you are willing to archive titles to USB.

How to choose a PS5-compatible M.2 SSD
Use the following checks on the manufacturer’s specification sheet, not only the product title:
- PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe: confirm the exact interface and protocol.
- Rated read speed: look for a sequential-read rating of 5,500MB/s or higher, Sony’s recommendation.
- Physical fit: verify a supported 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110 length, a maximum 25mm width and no more than 11.25mm total thickness with the heatsink.
- Cooling design: choose an effective heatsink or equivalent heat-dissipation structure that remains within the dimensional limit.
- Capacity: stay between 250GB and 8TB and base the choice on your library, not an unconfirmed GTA VI rumor.
- Warranty and firmware support: check the manufacturer’s policy and whether firmware updates require a separate computer or utility.
Do not remove a factory heatsink unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it. Do not stack a second heatsink on top of an existing one, and do not force the expansion cover closed. A drive that passes a speed benchmark but exceeds the physical limit is still unsuitable for the console.

- Check your current free space: open Settings > Storage and record Console Storage, not the capacity printed on the box.
- Check the PlayStation Store listing when pre-load opens: note every required-free-space figure and any separate download or installation requirement.
- Add headroom: leave room for launch patches, later updates, captures and temporary files instead of targeting an exact fit.
- Choose the storage path: keep GTA VI on Console Storage, install it on a compatible M.2 SSD, or archive other PS5 games to USB and copy them back only when needed.
- Recheck after installation: confirm the game’s location and remaining free space before starting a large update.
If the pre-load requirement exceeds your available Console Storage, you do not need to delete your entire library. Move less frequently played PS5 games to an M.2 SSD or USB archive, or install GTA VI directly on an M.2 SSD with enough free capacity. If the game’s requirement plus your desired headroom exceeds every installed location, expand capacity before pre-loading rather than waiting for the launch-day download.

Common storage mistakes and fixes
Buying an SSD based only on capacity
Symptom: the drive is 2TB or larger but the PS5 rejects it or the cover will not fit. Fix: verify PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, supported length, 25mm maximum width, 11.25mm maximum total thickness and a suitable heatsink before installation.

Assuming USB storage is playable for PS5 games
Symptom: GTA VI appears on the USB drive but cannot launch. Fix: copy the PS5 game back to Console Storage or an M.2 SSD. USB remains useful as an archive.
Filling a drive completely
Symptom: an update reports insufficient space even though the game itself is installed. Fix: remove or move another title and keep a deliberate buffer for patches and temporary installation data.
Trusting an early file-size rumor
Symptom: a purchase or deletion decision is based on a precise number posted before pre-load. Fix: wait for the PlayStation Store requirement and use that listing as the authoritative launch figure.

There is no confirmed GTA VI PS5 storage number yet. Plan around the PlayStation Store pre-load requirement when it appears, with additional free space for updates. For direct play, install the game on Console Storage or a compliant PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe SSD with Sony’s recommended 5,500MB/s read speed, correct dimensions and effective cooling.
