Nintendo currently lists Super Mario RPG at 6.5 GB and Trials of Mana at 10.7 GB for the full downloadable game. A Nintendo eShop comparison reported for Oninaki lists a 1.4 GB demo and a 2.7 GB full game.
Use those figures as examples, not a universal rule. Open the exact RPG’s current Nintendo eShop listing before downloading; patches, regional listings and revised store data can change the displayed requirement. If the available internal space is too low, Nintendo Switch software can be stored on a compatible microSDXC card.

What the example sizes tell you
RPGs on Switch do not share a standard demo-to-full-game ratio. Some demos are small, separately packaged portions of a game. Others may include large areas, high-resolution assets or voice files, so their size can be a substantial fraction of the finished release. A demo can also be updated after launch, changing the amount shown in the store.

The Oninaki numbers are launch-era figures from 2019, so they should not override the current eShop page. The two Nintendo listings are useful current examples of how far full-game requirements can differ: one is 6.5 GB, while the other is 10.7 GB.

How to find the exact RPG’s requirement
The store listing for the particular game is the only reliable answer for that game. Check it immediately before starting the download, especially if you are using an older listing, a different region or a console that already contains updates.
- Open Nintendo eShop on the Switch user account that will download the game.
- Search for the exact RPG title and select the correct edition. Avoid confusing a demo, a full game, downloadable content and a bundle.
- Scroll to the software information or download-size area. Record the number shown for the edition and region you intend to use.
- On the console, open System Settings from the HOME Menu, then choose Data Management to see free space in System Memory and on the microSD card.
- Compare the listing’s requirement with the free space on the destination storage. Leave additional room if the console needs to install an update or if you plan to keep other software there.
The number on the store page is the best planning figure, but it is not a promise that the installed footprint will never change. A patch can add data, replace files or alter the amount of free space required during installation.
Demo versus full game: what you are actually downloading
A conventional demo
A conventional demo is a separate, limited software package. It normally contains selected content rather than the complete game, so its size may be much smaller than the full release. The Oninaki figures illustrate this: the reported demo was 1.4 GB versus 2.7 GB for the full game.
Recommended Free Tools
That ratio is not a conversion formula. A different RPG could have a demo that is only a few hundred megabytes, close to the full-game size, or unavailable altogether. The demo may also use different compression or duplicate files instead of sharing data with a later purchase.

A Nintendo Switch Online Game Trial
Nintendo describes a Game Trial as “a free, downloadable full version of a game made available to Nintendo Switch Online members.” It is playable only for a limited period. This is different from a conventional demo: the download is the full version, but access is time-limited.
Because a Game Trial is a full downloadable version, plan for storage close to the size shown for that game’s full listing rather than assuming a small demo-sized file. Nintendo does not set one Game Trial size for every RPG, so check the specific trial and account eligibility in Nintendo eShop.
Why the distinction matters
- A conventional demo may fit when the full game does not.
- A Game Trial can require almost the same storage planning as buying the full game.
- Deleting a demo does not necessarily remove a separately purchased full game, because they can be separate software entries.
- A trial’s end date affects access, not necessarily the amount of storage it occupies while installed.
Will the Switch’s internal storage be enough?
That depends on the console’s remaining free space and the game’s current listing. A 6.5 GB download may fit on one console with few installed titles but fail on another that has screenshots, videos, updates and several games. The 10.7 GB Trials of Mana listing demonstrates why Nintendo warns that additional storage may be required.
Do not compare the game size with the console’s advertised total capacity. Compare it with the free space shown under System Settings > Data Management. The operating system and existing content already occupy part of the internal storage, and installation can require temporary working space.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Before downloading, check these items
- Free System Memory space, not total advertised capacity.
- Existing software updates and downloadable content.
- Saved screenshots and video captures if the storage is nearly full.
- Whether the download is directed to System Memory or a microSD card.
- Whether the game’s listing has changed since you last checked it.
If the available space is only barely above the displayed download size, archive an unused title or use a microSDXC card instead of relying on a narrow margin. The console may need to download and process update data after the initial installation.
Using a microSDXC card for Switch RPGs
Nintendo Switch software can be stored in System Memory or on a compatible microSDXC card. This is the relevant expansion option when an RPG demo or full game will not fit internally. The card does not change the game’s download requirement; it provides another destination with its own available-space total.
Install or prepare the card
- Turn the console off before inserting or removing the card, following Nintendo’s handling guidance for your Switch model.
- Insert a compatible microSDXC card into the console’s card slot.
- Turn the Switch on. If the card requires formatting, use the on-screen Data Management prompt and understand that formatting erases data on that card.
- Open System Settings > Data Management and confirm that the card appears with its free-space figure.
- Start the RPG download and confirm the destination if the console offers a choice.
Use a card with enough free space for the game, its updates and the other software you expect to keep. Nintendo’s warning on the Trials of Mana listing is a reminder that an additional storage device may be necessary depending on the hardware and how it is being used.
Moving existing software
If the internal memory is crowded, go to System Settings > Data Management and use the option for moving data between System Memory and the microSD card. Follow the on-screen selection for the software you want to move. Save data is managed separately from downloadable software; do not delete save data merely to reclaim space unless you have deliberately backed it up and no longer need it.

How much extra space should you leave?
There is no universal spare-space number because the eShop listing, update size and installation behavior differ by title. A practical approach is to treat the displayed download size as the minimum planning figure, then keep a buffer for patches and normal console use. The larger the RPG, the less sensible it is to fill the destination to its last few megabytes.
For example, a 6.5 GB full game should be planned against the free space shown on the console, not against a nominal card capacity. A 10.7 GB title should be checked even more carefully, particularly if the card already contains other games. The exact buffer is your decision; the current listing remains the authoritative starting point.

“Not enough free space” appears before the download
Check both System Memory and microSD card space in Data Management. Archive an unused game, delete unneeded captures, or move software to a compatible microSDXC card. Recheck the destination after each change; the console may still be targeting the fuller storage location.
The demo fits, but the full game does not
This is expected when the demo is a smaller, separate package. Keep the demo only if you want it for continued access, then free enough space for the full listing and any update. Do not assume that deleting the demo automatically creates a full-game installation package.

The displayed size differs from an older article
Prefer the current eShop listing for your region and edition. The Oninaki 1.4 GB and 2.7 GB figures were reported in 2019, while updates or listing revisions can change what a current console displays. Older numbers are useful historical examples, not a guarantee for a present download.
A Game Trial is larger than expected
That follows from Nintendo’s definition: it is a downloadable full version, not a short demo. Check the game’s trial listing, ensure the Nintendo Switch Online account meets the trial requirement, and reserve storage comparable to the full game.
The download stops after a card is inserted
Return to Data Management and verify that the card is recognized and has free space. If the Switch asks to format a new card, read the warning carefully because formatting erases its contents. Do not remove the card while software is downloading or being moved.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A simple decision guide
- Identify the format. Is it a conventional demo, a purchased full game or a Nintendo Switch Online Game Trial?
- Read the current listing. Record the exact GB figure for your region and edition.
- Check free space. Use System Settings > Data Management, including the destination card if one is installed.
- Plan for change. Leave room for updates and avoid filling storage to the displayed minimum.
- Expand only when needed. Use a compatible microSDXC card when internal space is insufficient.
What you can conclude from the published examples
The safest general expectation is a range, not a single number. A conventional RPG demo can be around 1.4 GB, as reported for Oninaki, while full RPG downloads in Nintendo’s current examples are 6.5 GB and 10.7 GB. Those values show why “How many GB is the Switch RPG demo?” cannot be answered accurately without the game’s name.
Check the current eShop page for the exact RPG, distinguish a conventional demo from a full-version Game Trial, and compare that figure with free space in Data Management. If the internal memory is short, a compatible microSDXC card is Nintendo’s supported expansion path.
