How Much Storage Does a Large Open-World RPG Need on PS5—and How to Free Space

Plan on roughly 100GB for one large open-world RPG on PS5, then keep additional headroom for patches, language packs and expansions. CD PROJEKT RED’s 2023 FAQ lists approximately 99.3GB for the PS5 free trial of Cyberpunk 2077, but that is an example rather than a universal requirement. Edition, installed languages, updates and downloadable expansions can all change the final size.

Sony does not publish one free-space percentage that fits every PS5 installation or update. Instead, open Settings > Storage, see what is consuming space and leave enough room for the next game, patch or expansion you actually expect to install.

How much space should you budget for a large PS5 RPG?

A practical starting point is about 100GB per large open-world RPG. That figure reflects the scale of current games, not a PS5 rule. The clearest published example is CD PROJEKT RED’s 2023 free-trial FAQ, which says the PS5 trial of Cyberpunk 2077 requires approximately 99.3GB (CD PROJEKT RED FAQ).

Use that number as a planning baseline, not as a promise that every RPG will fit in the same space. A complete retail release can differ from a trial; a later patch can add or replace files; optional language data can increase the install; and an expansion may require substantial additional storage. The store listing and the game’s current download screen are the authoritative figures for the edition you own.

Why two editions of the same game can have different sizes

  • Edition and platform files: A PS5-native build, a cross-generation bundle and a trial may package different assets.
  • Updates: Launch versions are not necessarily the versions you will install today. Patches can add content or temporarily require extra working space while files are replaced.
  • Language and accessibility data: Optional voiceovers, subtitles or other downloadable packs can change the total.
  • Expansions and add-ons: An expansion may be a separate download or folded into the base installation.
  • Duplicates: Installing both PS4 and PS5 versions consumes space twice for portions of the same game.

Advertised drive capacity is also not the same as free usable capacity. Formatting, system software and reserved console data reduce the space visible for games. Check the live figure in Settings > Storage rather than estimating from the number printed on a drive box. Sony’s storage overview explains the supported arrangements (Sony storage solutions for PS5 and PS4).

How much free space should you leave for updates?

There is no Sony-published percentage that guarantees every future update will install. The safe rule is workload-based: before downloading a game, patch or expansion, make sure the console shows more free space than the download requires and that you are comfortable with any temporary working space the installation may need.

A reliable way to plan your headroom

  1. Open Settings > Storage and note the available space, not just the total capacity.
  2. Check the size shown for the specific game, expansion or update you plan to install.
  3. Keep enough additional room for the largest near-term download you expect. If you plan to install a full RPG and its expansion together, plan for both rather than the base game alone.
  4. Recheck storage after a major update. A patch can alter the installed size, and the next expansion may have a different requirement.

This approach is more accurate than maintaining an arbitrary “10 percent free” or “20 percent free” rule, because Sony does not state one universal percentage and game requirements vary. If an update reports insufficient space, free the amount shown by the console and try again; do not assume deleting save data is necessary.

What can be deleted safely?

PS5 separates installed games and apps, media captures and saved data. Treat those categories differently so a cleanup does not erase progress.

Games and apps

Delete an installed game you are not playing from the Games and Apps area under Settings > Storage. Sony says purchases can be downloaded again from your game library, so removing the installation does not forfeit ownership. You will need to download the game again before playing it from the console.

Saved data

Do not delete saved data merely because you removed a game. Saved data contains your progress and settings and is separate from the game installation. Remove it only when you deliberately want to erase that progress. For supported saves, PlayStation Plus cloud storage provides a backup option; verify that the save has synchronized before deleting a local copy.

Media Gallery

Screenshots and video clips can consume considerable space, especially long or high-resolution recordings. In Settings > Storage, inspect Media Gallery and remove captures you have already copied elsewhere or no longer need. Review long clips first because they generally recover more space per deletion than individual screenshots.

Duplicate PS4 and PS5 installs

Look for both versions of the same title. Keep the PS5 version when you want its native build and features, and remove the PS4 version if you no longer need it. Keep the PS4 installation only when you have a specific reason, such as using a separate save or playing on a system that does not support the PS5 build.

USB extended storage versus an internal M.2 SSD

Both options add capacity, but they solve different problems. An installed M.2 SSD is the expansion path for launching PS5 games directly. USB extended storage is generally the lower-cost archive: it can hold PS5 games, but those games must be copied back to console storage or an M.2 SSD before you can play them. PS4 games can run directly from USB.

Check Sony’s current compatibility rules before buying. For M.2, the requirements include an NVMe interface, 250GB–8TB capacity, at least 5,500MB/s sequential read performance, suitable heat dissipation and dimensions that fit the expansion bay. The complete installation guidance is in Sony’s support article (How to add an M.2 SSD to a PS5 console). Product listings can change, so verify the manufacturer’s dimensions and measured sequential-read specification rather than relying on a “PS5 ready” label alone.

For USB extended storage, Sony specifies a capacity range of 250GB–8TB and SuperSpeed USB rated at 5Gbps or faster. A drive that does not meet those requirements may fail to format as extended storage or may disconnect under load. Sony’s overview lists the current USB and M.2 arrangements (Storage solutions for PS5 and PS4).

Step-by-step PS5 cleanup workflow

  1. Open the storage dashboard: Go to Settings > Storage. Review Games and Apps, Media Gallery and Saved Data separately.
  2. Sort your game list by what you no longer play: Remove finished campaigns, abandoned downloads and duplicate versions first. Purchased titles remain available to redownload from your library.
  3. Protect progress: Before deleting anything, confirm that the save belongs to the game you intend to keep. Leave Saved Data untouched unless you are intentionally removing progress. If you use PlayStation Plus cloud storage, allow the save to synchronize first.
  4. Clear large captures: Open Media Gallery from the storage view and delete redundant videos and screenshots. Copy anything you want to keep before removal.
  5. Choose where archived games belong: Move PS5 games to USB extended storage when you want to keep them without using console space but do not need immediate play. Move them to an installed M.2 SSD when you want to launch them without copying back.
  6. Check for both generations: If the same title has PS4 and PS5 entries, retain only the version that matches how you play. Remember that USB can launch the PS4 version directly but not the PS5 version.
  7. Recheck available space: Return to Settings > Storage and confirm the recovered amount before starting the update or installation again.

Which option fits your library?

Choose M.2 when PS5 games are your priority

An M.2 SSD is the convenient choice for a growing PS5 library. It lets you download, keep and launch PS5 games without the extra copy-back step required by USB. It costs more than basic external storage in many markets, and compatibility is less forgiving: capacity, sequential-read speed, physical dimensions and heat dissipation all matter.

Choose USB when you mainly need an archive

USB extended storage is useful when you rotate through games, want a portable library or still play many PS4 titles. It can preserve PS5 installations so you do not need to redownload them, but launching a PS5 game requires copying it to the console’s internal storage or an M.2 SSD first. For PS4 games, direct play from USB makes the archive more convenient.

Use both for different jobs

A mixed setup often makes the most sense: keep frequently played PS5 games on an M.2 SSD, archive less-used PS5 games on USB, and run PS4 games directly from the USB drive. The storage dashboard lets you decide which installations deserve fast, immediately playable space.

Common mistakes that waste space or time

  • Buying by advertised capacity alone: The number on the box is not the free space available after formatting and system reservations.
  • Deleting saves with the game: Removing an installation is different from removing Saved Data. Check the category before confirming.
  • Expecting USB to launch PS5 games: USB extended storage archives PS5 games; it does not provide direct PS5 playback.
  • Ignoring the PS4 copy: A duplicate cross-generation installation can consume space without adding value if you only play the PS5 build.
  • Trusting a generic SSD listing: Confirm NVMe type, at least 5,500MB/s sequential read speed, 250GB–8TB capacity, heatsink or other heat dissipation and expansion-bay dimensions against Sony’s guidance.
  • Using a fixed free-space percentage: Sony does not define one percentage for every workload. Check the actual requirement for the next installation or update.

Bottom line for planning a PS5 RPG library

Reserve about 100GB as the starting budget for one large open-world RPG, using the documented 99.3GB PS5 free-trial requirement for Cyberpunk 2077 as a concrete example rather than a universal limit. Keep extra room for the particular patches, languages and expansions you intend to install, and verify available space in Settings > Storage before each large download.

For immediate PS5 playback, install a Sony-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD. For lower-cost archiving, portability and direct PS4 play, use USB extended storage and copy PS5 games back when you want to play them. Clean Games and Apps, Media Gallery and duplicate versions first; leave Saved Data alone unless deleting progress is your explicit goal.
