You need enough space for the distinct video and audio files you keep—not a year of new footage just because the channel broadcasts around the clock. A one-hour playlist that repeats needs roughly one hour’s worth of source files, plus any separate archives, working files, and backups you choose to retain.
For a quick estimate, add the video and audio bitrates, then use: decimal GB ≈ combined bitrate in Mbps × unique hours × 0.45. At YouTube’s recommended 1080p standard-frame-rate video bitrate with recommended stereo audio, that works out to about 3.8 GB per hour. It is a planning estimate, not a YouTube storage requirement.

First decide what you are storing
A 24/7 broadcast and a 24/7 library of unique programming are different things. A channel can send a finite playlist repeatedly; it does not need a new source file for every hour it is live. The live feed is delivered to YouTube as media segments, but that transport does not by itself require a year of distinct source videos on your device.
- Finite library loop: size storage from the total runtime of the distinct videos in the rotation.
- Unique continuous programming: size it from the unique hours you keep each day and the number of days you retain.
- Broadcast archives: add the space for recorded live outputs if you save them separately.
- Backups and working files: count additional copies, project assets, and alternate exports separately.
For example, a single one-hour playlist at the 1080p standard-frame-rate planning rate below takes about 3.8 GB of source-file storage, whether it loops for a day or all year. A daily 24-hour set of unique programming takes about 90.5 GB at that rate.

Estimate storage from bitrate and unique runtime
Use this approximate formula for decimal units:
Storage in GB ≈ combined bitrate in Mbps × unique duration in hours × 0.45
The factor converts megabits per second across an hour into decimal gigabytes. It does not include container or filesystem overhead, project files, alternate exports, or duplicate copies. For decimal terabytes, divide the resulting gigabytes by 1,000. The arithmetic is an estimate; actual file sizes are more reliable, particularly with variable-bitrate encoding.

Illustrative estimates using YouTube’s SDR recommendations
YouTube Help recommends video bitrates by resolution and frame rate, and recommends 384 kbps stereo audio. The table adds that stereo-audio rate to the listed video rate, then applies the formula. These are planning estimates from the published recommendations, not measured file sizes or channel-specific requirements.

The 24-hour and year columns mean that every hour is distinct and retained. The year calculation uses 8,760 hours and decimal units (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes; 1 TB = 1,000 GB). It does not mean a channel needs that much space to loop a shorter playlist.

Use your actual exports for a closer answer
- List each distinct video or audio file in the rotation and add its file size. That sum is the source-library requirement before overhead or extra copies.
- If files are not ready yet, note each export’s total combined bitrate and runtime. Multiply the combined Mbps by total unique hours and by 0.45 for an approximate decimal-GB estimate.
- Add the size of any archives, project assets, alternate encodes, or separate backup copies you intend to keep.
- Leave extra capacity for new content and growth based on your own publishing and retention plan.
YouTube’s upload guidance recommends MP4 with H.264 video and common frame rates. It says: “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.” The listed bitrate values are recommendations, not a guarantee that every file at a given resolution will have the same bitrate or size. Variable-bitrate files can differ with the footage and encoder settings. See YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations.
What changes the estimate?
- Resolution and frame rate: higher settings can require higher bitrates. YouTube’s SDR recommendations include 720p at 5 Mbps for standard frame rate and 7.5 Mbps for high frame rate; 1080p at 8 Mbps and 12 Mbps, respectively.
- Audio format: the table assumes 384 kbps stereo audio. YouTube lists 512 kbps for 5.1 audio; substitute the rate for the format you actually export.
- HDR or other export settings: the table is not an HDR estimate. Use the recommendation or actual bitrate applicable to that export rather than reusing the SDR examples.
- Copies retained: a backup is another copy and adds its full size. RAID or other redundancy is not a separate recoverable backup by itself.
- Content cadence: a growing library needs room for new distinct material, even if older videos continue to loop.
How much capacity should a drive have?
Base drive capacity on the total size of your actual source files, then account for separate archives, backups, and future additions. As one scale reference, Seagate lists an 8TB Expansion Desktop model. At the 1080p standard-frame-rate estimate in the table, 8 decimal TB corresponds to roughly 2,100 hours of encoded source files before overhead, backups, and other uses. Common sizing mistakes
- Multiplying 24 hours by 365 for a looping playlist: that counts unique content the channel does not have. Use the playlist’s distinct runtime unless you also retain daily unique programming.
- Treating recommended bitrate as a guaranteed file size: the published rate is a planning input. Sum actual files when possible.
- Forgetting separate copies: calculate source files, archives, and backups as separate storage needs.
- Mixing units: the estimates here use decimal GB and TB. Divide GB by 1,000 to obtain decimal TB.
Copyright and children’s programming
Storage capacity does not determine whether a video can be broadcast. Make sure you have the rights to the music, footage, and other material in your videos before uploading or looping them. Repeating a playlist does not grant permission to use its contents. YouTube’s platform policies and copyright rules apply to live streams as well as uploaded videos; review the current requirements in YouTube Help and the policies relevant to your channel before scheduling a broadcast.
