How Much Storage Do You Need on a Galaxy Phone?

For most Galaxy buyers, 256GB is a comfortable default. Choose based on your photos, video, apps, offline media, cleanup habits and the exact model’s expansion support.

For most Galaxy buyers, 256GB is a comfortable default. Choose 128GB if you mainly stream content and routinely back up or clear photos and videos; consider 512GB or more if you record lots of high-resolution video, keep large games or offline media, or want a substantial library on the phone for years. These are usage-based recommendations, not Samsung’s minimum requirements. Check the exact model and market before buying: Galaxy storage options and microSD support vary.

Choose storage for what you keep on the phone

Internal storage is a finite pool shared by the operating system, apps, photos, videos, downloads and other files. Advertised capacity is not a promise that all of it will be available for personal files. Think about what you intend to retain locally over the phone’s useful life, rather than counting only the files you have today.

128GB: for lighter use and regular cleanup

128GB can suit someone with a modest app collection who streams rather than downloads media and regularly backs up or removes large photos and videos. It leaves less headroom for years of accumulated files, so it is a less comfortable choice if you prefer to keep everything on the device.

256GB: a balanced default

256GB is a practical middle ground for regular photography and video, a range of apps, and less frequent storage housekeeping. This is a recommendation based on Samsung’s storage illustrations and listed Galaxy configurations, not a manufacturer rule.

Estimate how quickly your files use space

Samsung UK’s 2026 phone-storage guide gives these approximate examples for 128GB: around 900 photos, 60 minutes of UHD video, 1,000 songs, 100+ apps and games, or 20 movies. These are illustrations, not guaranteed counts for every Galaxy: actual file sizes depend on the device, settings and content. Samsung notes that exact photo, video and app sizes vary. Samsung UK’s storage guide also estimates video at about 100MB per minute for Full HD, 300MB per minute for 4K and 600MB per minute for 8K.

Those recording estimates make video a particularly important factor. At the guide’s approximate rates, half an hour of 4K video is about 9GB, while half an hour of 8K is about 18GB. Treat these as planning estimates rather than fixed file sizes; capture settings and the phone affect the result.

Plan for updates and future use

Samsung’s guide recommends allowing approximately 10GB for additional files and software updates, then adding a 20% buffer to your estimated needs. To apply that advice, start with the files you expect to keep, add likely new photos, videos, apps and downloads over your ownership period, reserve the update and extra-file space, and leave the buffer. Do not treat the advertised capacity as entirely free space.

  1. Open the storage section in your current phone’s Settings and note how much space is used.
  2. Decide which used files you would actually transfer and keep on the new phone; exclude content you routinely delete or access by streaming.
  3. Estimate additional local use over the years you expect to keep the Galaxy, especially video, games and downloaded media.
  4. Allow approximately 10GB for extra files and updates, then add a 20% buffer to the usage estimate, following Samsung’s guide.
  5. Compare that estimate with the advertised tier, remembering that system software and other files also occupy storage.

Check the exact Galaxy model before counting on expansion

MicroSD support is not universal across Galaxy phones. Samsung’s US support article says Samsung Android devices do not support Adoptable storage: a card does not become a seamless extension of internal storage. On supported phones, a card can hold files and media, but many apps cannot be moved to it and preloaded apps cannot be moved. Samsung recommends microSDXC for high-resolution video because of its capacity and read/write capability. See Samsung’s microSD guidance.

Compatibility varies by model, not simply by Galaxy family. Samsung’s 2026 Galaxy A-series business guide, for example, lists microSD support for the Galaxy A17 5G alongside other models with their own configurations. Check the exact model number and regional specification before buying a card; do not infer support from another phone in the same series. Samsung’s Galaxy A-series guide is one example of model-specific variation.

Compare the available storage tiers and their price difference

  • Price premium: Compare the actual price difference at the time you buy, including only an upgrade promotion that is available to you then.
  • Ownership period: More years of accumulated photos, apps, updates and downloads generally make extra headroom more useful.
  • Capture habits: Consider how often you record high-resolution video and whether you keep those recordings on the phone.
  • Games and offline media: Large games, downloaded shows, music and maps can use space quickly.
  • Management preference: Decide whether you are comfortable backing up, deleting or transferring files regularly.
  • Verified expansion: Confirm microSD support for that exact model and remember that a card is not equivalent to internal app storage.

Samsung UK’s guide lists the Galaxy S26+ with 256GB or 512GB and the S26 Ultra with configurations up to 1TB. That is market-specific guide information, not a guarantee of availability in every country or from every retailer. Verify the local model and listing before using those tiers to compare prices. See Samsung UK’s current guide.

Use older device examples only as illustrations

In its 2024 microSD brochure, Samsung Semiconductor lists 7.93GB for 30 minutes of 4K video at 30fps on a Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G under one test configuration, with other listed configurations near 10GB per 30 minutes. This historical, device-specific result illustrates why video sizes vary; it is not an exact rate for a current Galaxy. Samsung Semiconductor’s 2024 brochure.
