Xbox Series X shooter installs range from a few dozen gigabytes for a single mode to more than 100 GB for a complete launch package. Halo Infinite‘s Xbox Series X Campaign component is approximately 34 GB, while Activision listed 136 GB of free space for the initial Xbox Series X|S installation of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Those figures are dated examples, not permanent limits: seasons, patches and asset reorganizations change the live size. For the number that matters on your console, open My games & apps → Manage game and add-ons and inspect the installed components.
What the published numbers actually mean
A store listing, a launch support article and the size shown in Xbox storage management can all describe different things. “Free space required” is the room the installer needs at a particular release. “Installed size” is what the current files occupy after updates. A mode component is only one part of the package. Treat each number according to its label and date.

| Shooter and source | Published figure | What it describes | Content that can be managed separately |
|---|---|---|---|
| Halo Infinite (Halo Support, 2023) | Approximately 34 GB | Xbox Series X Campaign component | Campaign, language packs and HD texture pack; Multiplayer is separate |
| Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (Activision, 2020) | 136 GB of free space | Space listed for the initial Xbox Series X|S installation at launch | Campaign, Multiplayer, Zombies and Dead Ops Arcade |
The 34 GB Halo figure is not the size of the entire game. It is the Campaign component on Xbox Series X. The 136 GB Cold War figure is a launch-time free-space requirement, not a promise that every current installation occupies exactly 136 GB. After updates, either title can be larger or smaller than an old article or screenshot suggests.

Halo Support says that, since launch in late 2021, the Campaign and Multiplayer experiences shared many files and systems. In Season 4, the content was separated. That change makes it possible to remove Campaign without removing the free Multiplayer installation, although the complete installation can become larger because formerly shared assets are no longer packaged in the same way.

On Xbox Series X, the Campaign download is approximately 34 GB according to Halo Support’s 2023 guidance. Language packs and the HD texture pack also appear as managed components. The exact list and sizes can change with later builds, so use the Manage Game screen rather than relying on that historical figure.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War: a large base install with removable modes
Activision listed 136 GB of free space on Xbox Series X|S for the initial installation in 2020. Its storage-management guidance explains that console players first install the entire base game—Campaign, Multiplayer, Zombies and Dead Ops Arcade—and can then remove individual content packs.
This explains why the first download can look excessive when you only intend to play one mode. After installation, the in-game Game Installs menu lets you keep Multiplayer while removing Campaign, Zombies or Dead Ops Arcade. Those components can be downloaded again through the Xbox Store if you change your mind.

Why a shooter can be much larger than its store listing
Full package versus the mode you actually play
Large shooters are commonly delivered as one base package so the console can complete authentication, shared technology and initial setup. Campaign cinematics, competitive maps, cooperative missions and other modes may then be exposed as independent install options. A listing that describes the base game does not necessarily show the smallest playable configuration.

Conversely, a mode-only figure such as Halo’s 34 GB Campaign number does not include Multiplayer, optional textures or languages. Compare like with like: full installation to full installation, or Campaign to Campaign.
Updates, seasons and asset reorganizations
Live-service shooters replace, add and reorganize files. A seasonal update can add maps or high-resolution assets; a later patch can remove files that are no longer needed. Activision’s Black Ops 6 support guidance specifically notes that older files may be removed automatically in a later update to free storage. Therefore, a launch article, search-result snippet or screenshot can be stale even when it accurately reported the size at publication.
Language and high-definition texture packs
Optional languages and HD texture packs are easy to overlook because they may be listed below the main game entry. They can add substantial data without changing the mode you play. If you do not need a language or texture pack, remove that component from the title’s install-management screen rather than deleting the whole game.

- Press the Xbox button and open My games & apps.
- Select See all, highlight the shooter and press the Menu button (the button with three lines).
- Choose Manage game and add-ons.
- Open the game entry and review the installed items, their individual sizes and the total shown by Xbox.
- For titles with their own content manager, launch the game and open Game Installs or the similarly named install menu. Compare its mode list with the Xbox list before changing anything.
- Record which modes you use. Leave those items selected and clear only components you can redownload when needed.
Menu wording can vary slightly between a base game, a cross-generation package and an installed add-on. If a component is not listed as a separate item, do not assume it is safe to remove: the title may bundle it with another mode.
What you can delete safely
“Safe” means the deletion removes only an optional component and does not erase your ownership entitlement or saved progress. It does not mean the mode remains playable offline after removal. The mode will be unavailable until its files are installed again.
| Component | Delete it when… | Keep it when… | Result of deletion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Campaign | You play only online or cooperative modes and do not plan to start the story soon. | You are partway through the story or want immediate offline access. | Campaign cannot launch until the pack is redownloaded. |
| Multiplayer | You never use competitive or online matches. | You rely on online matchmaking or multiplayer practice. | Online multiplayer is unavailable until the pack returns. |
| Zombies or another co-op mode | You do not play that mode. | You regularly use its maps, missions or progression. | That mode and its maps are unavailable until reinstalled. |
| Dead Ops Arcade | You do not use the arcade mode. | You want its missions available without another download. | The mode is removed, while other installed modes remain. |
| Language pack | You use another installed language. | You need the language for voice or text. | That language’s audio or text must be downloaded again to use it. |
| HD texture pack | You prefer a smaller install or do not need the enhanced textures. | You want the pack’s higher-resolution assets and have room. | The game falls back to the remaining installed assets until the pack is restored. |
Halo Infinite deletion plan
- Open My games & apps → See all → Halo Infinite → Menu → Manage game and add-ons.
- Expand the Halo Infinite entry and identify Campaign, Multiplayer, language packs and the HD texture pack.
- Clear Campaign if you play only Multiplayer. Leave Multiplayer selected.
- Clear an unused language or HD texture pack only after checking that your preferred voice and text language remains installed.
- Select Save changes (or the equivalent Xbox confirmation) to apply the removal.
Removing Halo Campaign does not remove your purchase entitlement; it removes the local files. Reinstall Campaign from the same managed-content screen before playing the story again. If you do play Campaign, keep that component installed to avoid a new download at your next session.

- Finish the initial base installation before trying to reduce it; Activision says the console first installs Campaign, Multiplayer, Zombies and Dead Ops Arcade together.
- Open the title’s Game Installs menu, or use My games & apps → Manage game and add-ons.
- Keep Multiplayer selected if online matches are your priority.
- Clear Campaign, Zombies or Dead Ops Arcade when you are not using those modes.
- Confirm the change and check the new total in Xbox storage management.
Activision states that uninstalled content can be redownloaded through the platform Store. Recheck the Game Installs list after updates, because a patch can add, replace or reorganize mode files.

What deletion does—and does not do
- It removes local game data for the selected component and immediately returns that space to the drive.
- It does not cancel ownership or licensing. The component remains associated with the game or account and can be installed again.
- It does not make an uninstalled mode playable. Starting that mode will prompt a download or show it as unavailable until the files return.
- It can change the title’s total size after a patch, because the game may rebuild shared files or add a new required dependency.
Use the game’s own install manager whenever one exists. Deleting the entire game from the general library is less precise and can remove every mode, pack and local installation at once.
Troubleshooting unexpected storage use
The number is higher than the store page
Check the date and definition of the store figure first. It may be a launch free-space requirement rather than the current installed size. Then inspect every component under Manage game and add-ons, including language and texture packs. Finally, open the in-game Game Installs menu and look for mode packs that Xbox groups under the main title.
A patch appears to reinstall content
Live-service updates can replace shared files or add a dependency that another mode needs. Reopen the component list after the update finishes and remove only packs that are still marked optional. If a mode you removed returns, the update may have restored a required base file; remove it again only if the menu identifies it as independently uninstallable.
There is not enough free space for an update
- Open Manage game and add-ons for each large shooter and sort your decisions by mode rather than by title.
- Remove unused Campaign, Zombies, Dead Ops Arcade, language or HD texture components first.
- Keep the mode you need for the next play session and verify its checkbox before confirming.
- Retry the update after Xbox reports the reclaimed space. If the update still fails, inspect another installed title; the console may need additional temporary working room beyond the final patch size.
When an expansion card is the better answer
If you regularly rotate several large shooters and need Campaign, Multiplayer and cooperative content available at the same time, repeatedly deleting and redownloading packs becomes a scheduling problem. An Xbox Series X|S storage expansion card is the most direct hardware remedy: it adds console-compatible game storage so more complete installations can remain ready. Choose the capacity and current price from the listing available in your region; those details are not fixed by the install figures above.
An expansion card does not make a game’s files smaller and does not stop seasonal updates from changing them. It simply gives you more room, reducing the need to remove a mode you expect to play soon.
A practical storage routine for shooter libraries
- Measure before deleting: record the current total and each component in Manage game and add-ons.
- Keep by activity: retain the modes you play weekly; remove one-time Campaigns or dormant co-op packs.
- Review after every major season: updates can change shared files and optional-pack requirements.
- Use the title’s manager: it exposes mode-level choices that a generic uninstall does not.
- Plan for redownload time: an uninstalled mode is not available until its files finish downloading again.
- Escalate hardware only when needed: add an expansion card when mode-level trimming no longer leaves enough room for the games you actually keep installed.
The reliable answer to “How many gigabytes does this shooter need?” is therefore the number shown for your installed build today, separated into the modes you use. Published figures such as Halo Infinite’s approximately 34 GB Campaign component and Cold War’s 136 GB launch free-space requirement provide useful scale, but the Xbox management screen determines what your console needs now.
