How Much Storage Do PS Plus Games Need? A Practical PS5 Storage Guide

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

There is no fixed storage allowance or universal average for PlayStation Plus games. Each title determines its own requirement, and the figure can differ between PS4 and PS5 versions, change after patches, and grow when language packs or optional add-ons are installed. Check the current PlayStation Store listing and the download screen for the exact game, then verify available space under Settings > Storage before starting the download.

If the console is full, you can remove an installed game without losing your purchase or Plus entitlement, move PS5 games to USB extended storage for archiving, install a compatible M.2 SSD for playable expansion, or use cloud streaming for eligible titles on the Premium plan. Cloud saves protect saved data; they do not store installed game files.

What determines a PS Plus game’s storage requirement?

PlayStation Plus is a subscription and catalog-access system, not a single-size download format. The storage shown for a game belongs to that game’s current build and content selection.

PS4 and PS5 versions can be different

A title offered with both generations may have separate PS4 and PS5 packages. Textures, audio, lighting assets, frame-rate modes and other files can differ, so do not assume that the smaller PS4 figure applies to the PS5 version. If both versions appear in your library, read the size beside the specific version you intend to install.

  • Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
  • With capacities ranging from 1TB to 4TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
  • Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
  • Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
  • Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.

Patches can change the footprint

Updates replace or add files. A game that fit comfortably when first downloaded can require more space after several patches. The number shown on a store page is therefore a current estimate for that edition, not a permanent lifetime size. Leave unused capacity for future updates rather than filling the drive to its last few gigabytes.

Optional content and language files add space

Downloadable expansions, high-resolution texture packs, campaign modules and additional language audio can be separate selections. Install only the components you need when the console offers a choice. A base game and its complete edition may have noticeably different requirements even though they share a title.

How to check the exact size before installing

  1. Open the current Store listing. Select the PS4 or PS5 edition you want and read the storage figure shown with that version. Store data can change, so use the listing available in your region at the time you download.
  2. Start the download far enough to reach the PS5 download screen. The console displays the package it is preparing and the space it needs. Canceling at this point does not remove your entitlement.
  3. Confirm free space on the console. Go to Settings > Storage. The summary shows how much room remains on console storage and any installed expansion location.
  4. Inspect installed titles. Choose Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps to review game data and decide what can be removed or moved.

Do not plan around an internet-wide “average PS Plus game size.” Sony’s support pages do not publish a universal statistic, and a single average would hide the differences between editions, updates and optional packs.

Freeing space on PS5 without losing your games

Delete an installed game and redownload it later

Deleting local game data removes the installation, not the purchase record or the Plus claim. Sony says deleted purchases can be downloaded again from your game library. This is the simplest option when you have a reliable connection and want to reclaim space immediately.

  1. Open Settings > Storage.
  2. Select Console Storage > Games and Apps.
  3. Highlight the game or add-on you no longer need locally and choose the delete control.
  4. When you want it again, open your game library, select the title and download the version included with your entitlement.

Deleting a game does not automatically delete its saved data. Check the separate saved-data area if you deliberately want to remove saves, and keep a backup before doing so.

Archive games you are not currently playing

Large PS5 titles that you want to keep available can be moved to USB extended storage. The move preserves the installed files as an archive, but a PS5 game must be copied back to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before it can launch. This approach avoids downloading the entire title again while keeping internal space available for games in active rotation.

Remove optional packs you do not use

Review a title’s entries in Games and Apps and remove unused language packs or add-ons where the console lists them separately. Keep any expansion or multiplayer component you still use; deleting an optional pack may make its related content unavailable until it is downloaded again.

USB extended storage: inexpensive archiving for PS5

Sony’s USB extended-storage guide specifies a SuperSpeed USB connection rated at 5 Gbps or later and a capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB. Drives outside those limits are not covered by the stated PS5 requirement.

What you can do with it

  • PS5 games: move or copy them to the USB drive for storage, then copy them back to console storage or an M.2 SSD to play.
  • PS4 games: install and play compatible PS4 titles directly from USB extended storage.
  • Other files: the drive is intended for PS4 and PS5 game data in this context; do not treat it as a cloud-save replacement.

PlayStation’s support wording is explicit: “PlayStation®5 games can’t be played directly from USB extended storage, so make sure to copy PS5® game data back to your console storage when you want to play the game again.” Copy time depends on the drive, the amount of data and the console’s transfer rate; Sony’s cited guide does not promise a universal transfer time.

When USB is the right choice

  • You want the lowest-complexity way to archive several large PS5 games.
  • You regularly play PS4 games and want them to remain launchable without using internal space.
  • You can tolerate copying a PS5 game back before each play session.

Use a drive that meets the stated 5 Gbps-or-faster interface and 250 GB-to-8 TB range. Capacity, price and real-world transfer speed vary by model; the cited Sony page does not establish a standard cost or copy-time figure.

M.2 SSD: playable internal expansion

A compatible M.2 SSD is the internal expansion route for playing games without the USB copy-back step. Sony’s storage-management information says an installed M.2 SSD can download, copy and launch both PS5 and PS4 games. Compatibility must be checked against Sony’s requirements for the particular drive and PS5 model before purchase or installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why choose an M.2 SSD

  • PS5 games launch directly from the expansion location.
  • PS4 games can also be stored and played there.
  • Games can be downloaded or copied to it instead of occupying console storage.

The official pages cited here do not state one universal M.2 capacity, price or transfer-time figure. Those values depend on the SSD selected and the current compatibility requirements. Follow Sony’s installation and formatting instructions for your console rather than assuming that every M.2 drive will work.

Cloud saves and cloud streaming solve different problems

Cloud saves preserve progress, not installations

PlayStation Plus cloud storage is for saved data. Sony lists 100 GB of cloud storage for members on each current plan on its PlayStation Plus support page. Uploading a save does not upload the game itself, its patches or its add-ons, so you still need local storage, an expansion drive or a fresh download to play.

Use cloud saves when you are deleting a local installation but want your progress available after reinstalling. Confirm that the latest save has synchronized before removing local data, especially if you play on more than one console.

Premium cloud streaming avoids a local game download

Premium members can stream select catalog games without downloading the streamed title to the console. PlayStation describes this as requiring no downloads or game updates for eligible games and no need to free console space for that streamed title on its PS5 features page. Availability depends on the game, country or region, subscription plan and network conditions; not every Plus game is streamable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sony’s current Plus support information lists 5 Mbps as the minimum connection speed for streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. Those are connection requirements, not guarantees of image quality or latency. Wi-Fi congestion, household traffic and distance from the streaming service can still affect play.

A practical PS5 storage workflow

1. Check before every large download

Read the edition-specific Store figure, then open Settings > Storage. If the available space is close to the requirement, remove or move another title first. This prevents an interrupted installation when a patch or optional pack also needs room.

2. Keep active PS5 games on playable storage

Use console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD for games you launch frequently. Reserve USB extended storage for PS5 titles you want to archive and PS4 games you play directly from the drive.

3. Rotate, rather than hoard, installed games

After finishing a campaign or pausing a multiplayer game, delete its local installation if you have dependable broadband and cloud-synchronized saves. If the download is large or your connection is limited, move the PS5 data to USB instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Separate saves from game files

Before deleting anything, identify whether you are removing the game, an add-on or saved data. Cloud storage can preserve saves, but it cannot restore an installation without a download or a stored copy on an expansion drive.

5. Use streaming selectively

When a Premium catalog title is available to stream in your region, streaming can let you try it without allocating local space. Download the game instead when you need offline play, the title is not streamable, or your connection cannot maintain the required quality.

Troubleshooting common storage problems

The PS5 says there is not enough space

  • Check Settings > Storage for the actual free-space figure rather than relying on a rough estimate.
  • Open Console Storage > Games and Apps and remove an unused installation, move a PS5 game to USB, or relocate content to an M.2 SSD.
  • Recheck the Store listing for the correct PS4 or PS5 edition and any selected add-ons.
  • Leave additional headroom for updates instead of filling the drive exactly to the displayed package size.

A PS5 game on USB will not start

This is expected behavior, not necessarily a defective drive. Copy the game back to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD, then launch it from that playable location. PS4 games are the ones Sony identifies as playable directly from compatible USB extended storage.

You deleted a Plus game and cannot find it

Open your game library and check the account that claimed or purchased the title. Removing the installation does not remove the entitlement; download the game again while the entitlement remains valid. If the catalog listing has changed, verify whether you originally claimed a monthly game or accessed a catalog title under a current plan.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Your save is missing after reinstalling

Check whether the save was synchronized to Plus cloud storage before deletion and whether you are using the same PlayStation account. Cloud storage contains saved data only, so reinstall the game first and then restore the appropriate save.

Streaming quality is poor

Confirm that your connection meets Sony’s listed minimum of 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. A speed test alone does not guarantee stable play: congestion, wireless interference and regional service availability can affect latency and image quality. Download the title or use local storage when the connection cannot sustain the stream.

Key takeaways

  • Every PS Plus game has its own storage requirement; there is no universal size.
  • Check the current Store listing and PS5 download screen for the exact edition you are installing.
  • Updates, language files and optional content can increase the installed footprint.
  • USB extended storage must meet Sony’s 5 Gbps-or-faster and 250 GB-to-8 TB requirements; it archives PS5 games but plays compatible PS4 games directly.
  • A compatible M.2 SSD lets you download, copy and launch PS5 and PS4 games without moving them back to console storage.
  • Cloud saves use the Plus allowance for progress, not game installations.
  • Premium streaming can avoid a local download for eligible catalog games, subject to plan, region and network limits.
