Plan on tens to well over 100 GB per modern console game, then reserve additional space for patches, downloadable content, captures and the console’s own working requirements. A store listing is a snapshot, not a permanent upper limit. The reliable way to estimate capacity is to total the current install sizes of the games you actually play, add update headroom, and choose expansion that lets those games run in the way you expect.
There is no honest universal “average game size” for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. Sizes vary by title, edition, language packs, optional content and later updates. The platform rules matter just as much as the advertised terabytes: a PlayStation 5 M.2 SSD can host playable PS5 games, while a USB drive can archive PS5 games but cannot run them directly.

What a game’s storage number really includes
The number shown in a digital store or download queue is usually the starting point for planning, not a promise that the installation will never grow. A complete working footprint can contain several components.
Base game files
High-resolution textures, detailed audio, large open worlds and cinematics make current-generation releases much larger than many older games. Some titles fit below 50 GB; others pass 100 GB before any later content is installed. Treat those figures as examples of a wide range, not as a platform-wide average.

- Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
- With capacities ranging from 1TB to 8TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
- Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
- Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
Patches and version changes
Post-launch updates can add features, fix bugs or replace existing files. A patch may be smaller than the game, but the console can temporarily need extra free space while it downloads, verifies and applies the update. Keep a margin above the displayed size so an update does not fail at the final step.
Downloadable content and optional packs
Expansion areas, language audio, high-resolution texture packs and multiplayer components can be separate downloads. Install only the components you use when the game offers that choice; otherwise include them in your estimate.
Captures, applications and system reservations
Screenshots, video clips, saved replays and other user data consume the same internal pool. The operating system also reserves space for system files and temporary operations. An advertised 1 TB device therefore does not present 1 TB as free game space, and the usable amount can change after system updates.

A practical capacity rule
Use this calculation for a library you want available at the same time:
Required capacity ≈ installed game sizes + expected DLC + update headroom + captures and other data.
For a quick estimate, take the total current sizes of your active games and add 20–30 percent for updates and working space. That percentage is a planning buffer, not a platform specification; titles with frequent large updates may need more. If you routinely keep unfinished games, add their full current size even if you do not play them every week.

How many games fit?
Divide free usable space by the size of each game, then round down. Because libraries mix small and large titles, the result is a range rather than a fixed count.
| Free usable space | 50 GB games | 100 GB games | 150 GB games |
|---|---|---|---|
| 250 GB | About 5 | About 2 | About 1 |
| 500 GB | About 10 | About 5 | About 3 |
| 1,000 GB | About 20 | About 10 | About 6 |
These are simple arithmetic illustrations using the stated game sizes. Real counts are lower when you reserve update space, install expansions, retain captures or account for the console’s reserved storage. Check the current store listing for each title before buying an expansion drive.
Expansion options by platform
The key question is not only “How many terabytes?” but also “Can I play a game directly from this device?”
| Platform and option | What it can hold | Can you play directly? | Capacity information | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 compatible M.2 SSD | PS5 and PS4 games | Yes, for games installed on the M.2 | Up to 8 TB, according to Sony | Adding permanently playable PS5 capacity |
| PlayStation 5 USB extended storage | PS5 games for storage and transfer; PS4 games | PS5 games must be copied back before play; PS4 games can run directly | 250 GB minimum to 8 TB maximum, according to Sony | PS4 play and inexpensive PS5 archiving |
| Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card | Native current-generation Xbox games | Designed for direct play through the console’s expansion workflow | Current capacities, prices and licensing must be checked with Microsoft because they change | Keeping Series X|S games playable without moving them |
| Nintendo Switch compatible microSD card | Digital games and downloadable content supported by the console | Yes, when the card and game are compatible | Exact requirement depends on the game and free console space; Nintendo says some games require an additional card | Expanding a digital Switch library |
Advertised capacity is decimal storage supplied by the manufacturer; the console reports less usable space after formatting and reservations. Compare devices by usable capacity and by the amount of moving or reinstalling you are willing to do, not by the printed number alone.
PlayStation 5: choose between M.2 and USB storage
M.2 SSD for playable PS5 capacity
Sony supports a compatible M.2 SSD expansion of up to 8 TB. Games installed there can be played as PS5 or PS4 titles, making this the straightforward choice when you want a larger library ready to launch. Compatibility still matters: select an M.2 model that meets Sony’s PS5 requirements rather than assuming every computer SSD will work.
After installation, use the PS5 storage controls to format the drive when prompted, then select it as the installation location for new games or move existing titles from console storage. Keep the console firmware current and follow Sony’s current compatibility and installation guidance, since specifications and supported models can change.

- DESIGNED FOR THE PS5 CONSOLE: Engineered to fit perfectly and easily into the PS5 console's SSD expansion slot for a quick and easy install.
- REVOLUTIONARY COOLING: Made from High-Quality CNC'd aluminum, the Sabrent Heatsink for the PS5 console was specifically designed to maximize cooling performance and simplify installation.
- UPGRADE YOUR CONSOLE! Rather than creating a heatsink that would only trap the heat in the metal cover, we designed a heatsink that replaces the native PS5 consoles cover. This allows for better cooling using the native fan as well as being a larger heatsink.
- INDUSTRIAL QUALITY: This SSD heatsink method also uses Sabrent's "Sandwich Design" which ensures even pressure throughout the SSD for efficient and consistent heat transfer unlike methods used by other brands.
- CONVENIENCE: Comes with an installation guide as well as screws and thermal tape for easy convenient installation.
USB extended storage for PS4 play and PS5 archiving
Sony lists USB extended-storage capacities from 250 GB through 8 TB. A PS5 game can be stored there, but Sony’s rule is explicit: PS5 games can’t be played directly from USB extended storage, so make sure to copy PS5 game data back to your PS5 console storage when you want to play the game again.
PS4 games can be played directly from the USB extended drive.
That makes a USB hard drive or SSD useful when you rotate through PS5 games and want to avoid downloading them again. It is not a substitute for an M.2 drive if your priority is launching PS5 games without a transfer step. A USB device also has to be connected and recognized by the console before its games appear as available.
Moving, deleting and reinstalling on PS5
- Open the PS5 storage management screen and review game, media and saved-data categories separately.
- Sort your installed games by size or recent use. Move infrequently played PS5 titles to USB extended storage, or to an M.2 SSD if you want them immediately playable.
- Delete a completed game when you need space. Your purchase remains in your library, so you can reinstall it later without buying it again.
- Before a large update, leave enough free space for the download and the console’s temporary installation work; do not wait until the drive is completely full.
- Use the PlayStation App to review and manage supported storage tasks remotely when that feature is available for your console and account.
Protecting PS5 saves
Game installations can be downloaded again; an unsynchronized save may not be recoverable. PlayStation Plus members receive 100 GB of cloud storage for saved data under Sony’s documented service terms. Confirm that synchronization has completed before deleting a local installation, and keep separate backups for irreplaceable captures or files.

Xbox Series X|S uses a dedicated Storage Expansion Card workflow for native current-generation games. The card is designed to preserve the performance and feature set expected by Series X|S titles, so it is the relevant option when you want those games stored externally and playable without repeatedly moving them.
Microsoft’s current capacities, retail prices and licensing arrangements can change. Check the Xbox Support Storage Expansion Card page and the listing for your region before purchase. Do not assume that a generic USB drive provides the same behavior for Series X|S games.
Use USB storage strategically
A USB drive remains useful for compatible older games, captures and temporary storage, but current-generation titles may require the internal drive or the dedicated expansion card to run. If the console labels a game as needing a transfer, treat that as a compatibility rule rather than a fault with the drive.

Keep a rotation plan
Players with a large Game Pass or digital library can keep frequently played Series X|S titles on the internal drive or expansion card and move dormant games to another device. Moving is usually faster than downloading a very large game again, but it still requires waiting before play. Leave free space for updates instead of filling every byte with archived games.
Nintendo Switch: when a microSD card becomes necessary
Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ warns that some Switch games require an additional microSD card. A digital purchase may need a card depending on the game’s storage requirement and the free space remaining on the console. The requirement is therefore title-specific: check the game’s current listing and your console’s available space before purchase.
Install and manage digital data
- Insert a compatible microSD card while the console is powered down according to Nintendo’s instructions.
- Open System Settings > Data Management to view free space, software sizes and the location of downloadable content.
- Move or archive software you are not currently playing when the menu offers that option, then redownload it later from your account if needed.
- Keep the card inserted when launching software stored on it; removing it makes that software unavailable until the card is restored.
Physical cartridges reduce the amount of game data downloaded, but updates and downloadable expansions can still require internal or microSD space. A physical copy is not a guarantee that no storage is needed.

Start with the largest, least-used items
Open the platform’s storage screen and sort by size. Remove finished campaigns, duplicate installations and video captures before deleting games you still play. Reclaiming one very large title can solve an update problem faster than clearing dozens of small files.
Archive instead of repeatedly reinstalling
Use a USB drive for PS5 archives, an Xbox-compatible rotation workflow, or Switch’s data-management options according to each platform’s rules. Record which device contains each title if you rotate several drives; a simple note prevents unnecessary downloads.

Control captures
Long video clips can consume more room than expected. Move important captures to a computer or another backup location, then delete old clips from the console. Keep at least one copy outside the console before clearing it.
Separate saves from installations
Deleting a game and deleting its saved data are different actions. Confirm the save location and synchronization status first. Cloud storage protects against a console failure only when the save has actually uploaded and the subscription or service terms still apply.
How to compare an expansion purchase
Use the following checklist rather than choosing the largest advertised number.
- Playable directly: Does the device run the games you care about, or only store them for transfer?
- Interface and compatibility: Is it a PS5-compatible M.2 SSD, PS5 USB extended storage, an Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card, or a Nintendo Switch-compatible microSD card?
- Usable capacity: How much remains after formatting and system reservations?
- Transfer convenience: How often will you move a game before playing it?
- Price per usable terabyte: Divide the current purchase price by usable terabytes, not the label capacity. Prices were not specified in the platform guidance and vary by region and date.
- Portability: Will the drive stay with one console, or do you need to move it between consoles? Reformatting or account permissions may affect portability.
- Reliability and backup: Expansion storage is not a backup. Keep saves and irreplaceable media in a separate protected location.
Troubleshooting common storage problems
The console says there is not enough space for an update
Delete or move a large inactive game, clear unnecessary captures, and retry with a buffer left free. The update may require temporary working space beyond the final installed size.
A PS5 game on USB will not start
That behavior is expected for PS5 titles on USB extended storage. Copy the game back to PS5 console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before launching it. PS4 games are the exception and can run from the USB extended drive.
An expansion device is not recognized
Check that the device meets the platform’s interface and compatibility requirements, is connected directly as specified, and has been formatted by the console when required. Test another port or cable only after confirming that the device itself is supported. Formatting erases existing data, so copy anything important elsewhere first.
A digital Switch game asks for a microSD card
Check the game’s required space against the free space shown under System Settings > Data Management. Insert a compatible card, then retry the download. Nintendo specifically notes that some games require additional microSD capacity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA game disappeared after moving storage
Reconnect the original device, verify that the same user account is signed in, and check the console’s library or redownload list. Moving an installation does not remove your purchase entitlement, but the storage device must be present for the moved files to be usable.
A simple long-term storage routine
- Once a month, review free space and sort installations by size.
- Keep a shortlist of games you are actively playing; archive the rest according to the platform’s direct-play rules.
- Before installing a major release, check its current listed size and leave update headroom.
- Sync or back up saves before deleting software or changing storage devices.
- Move captures off the console and verify the copy before deleting the originals.
- Recalculate your needs after buying downloadable expansions or adding another player’s profile.
This routine prevents the common surprise in which a drive appears full even though the visible game list seems to fit: updates, optional content, captures and reserved system space are part of the real working footprint.
