Large mobile games can take tens of gigabytes, and installing or updating one may require more free space than its store download size suggests. Check the publisher’s current requirement for your game and device, then make room by removing files you no longer need or clearing temporary cache—not by deleting app data unless you understand what will be lost.
How much free space do large mobile games need?
There is no single storage requirement for every large mobile game. It varies by title, platform, downloaded content and update state. Use the game publisher’s current figure for your device rather than treating another game’s requirement as a general rule.

These are Genshin Impact requirements, not a benchmark for other games. HoYoverse cautions that “Storage requirements may increase with future game updates.” Check the [official Genshin Impact system requirements] before installing or updating.

A store’s download figure and the space needed by a finished game are different measurements. Google Play’s developer documentation bases its size limits on compressed download size and treats install-time and on-demand asset packs separately. A game can therefore download additional resources after installation, and an update may need working space while files are being replaced. The Play documentation explains the distinction, but it does not establish the installed size of any particular game. See [Google Play’s app-size and asset-pack guidance].
#1 Best Overall
- Expand your storage in a flash: ideal for Android smartphones and tablets, Chromebooks, and Windows laptops.
- Up to 140MB/s transfer speeds to move up to 1000 photos per minute
- Load apps faster with A1-rated performance
- View, access, and back up your phone’s files in one location with the SanDisk Memory Zone app
- Relax knowing your card is backed by a 10-year limited warranty by SanDisk
When planning, look for the publisher’s current available-storage requirement for your platform. Do not compare a compressed store download on one platform with the fully updated footprint on another.
How to free storage without risking game progress
Start with files you recognize and can replace, then consider app cleanup. Avoid removing a game until you have checked how that title stores progress and whether you can sign back into the same account.

- Check the game’s current requirement. Use the publisher’s instructions for the exact game and platform. Leave room for future updates if the publisher recommends it; do not assume a fixed patch allowance.
- Inspect what is using space. On Android, open Settings > Storage. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage or iPad Storage. Menu labels and available tools can vary; some Google Android help steps apply only to Android 14 or later.
- Remove offline files you no longer need. Review downloaded videos, music, maps and other local files. If photos are backed up, confirm the copies are available before deleting them from the device. Google also describes copying files and folders from Android to a computer over USB before deleting local copies. Follow [Google’s Android storage instructions].
- Clear cache, not storage, when you mean temporary cleanup. On Android, clearing cache removes temporary data; an app may be slower the next time it opens. Clearing storage is different: Google says it “Permanently deletes all app data” and advises trying to delete data within the app first. Do not use Clear storage as a synonym for clearing cache.
- Archive or uninstall apps you can restore. Android’s archive option, where supported, removes an infrequently used app while preserving personal data. Uninstall only when you are comfortable downloading the app again.
- Before deleting a game, verify its save and sign-in rules. Confirm you know the account credentials and check the game publisher’s reinstall guidance. Activision says Call of Duty: Mobile progress and other game data can be reinstated after reinstalling when the player signs in with the same account. That assurance is specific to that game; do not assume another title behaves the same way. See [Activision’s Call of Duty: Mobile support].
- Install or update, then check storage again. Use a reliable connection and confirm the game has completed downloading its additional resources before judging its final space use.
What not to delete or assume
- Do not clear an app’s full storage just to reclaim cache. Full app-data deletion can remove local data and settings; use the app’s own cleanup controls where possible.
- Do not assume cloud saves are enabled. Check the specific publisher’s instructions and confirm the account you use to sign back in.
- Do not expect a USB drive or SD card to expand game-install space. A compatible external drive may help copy personal files off a device, but compatibility varies and an accessory does not necessarily let a game install or run from it.
- Do not rely on a generic “storage booster.” Review files and app storage yourself so you know what is being removed.
