Choose a direct subscription if you mainly use one provider’s chat product and depend on its own features or included usage. Consider an aggregator if you regularly compare models, want several providers behind one interface or API, or need to route tasks between models. Neither option is automatically cheaper: the right fit depends on the services, limits and billing model you will actually use.
What’s the difference?
A direct subscription is purchased from the model provider for access to that provider’s product. An aggregator is a separate service that brings models from multiple providers into a shared product or API. The exact model lineup and features vary by service.

For example, OpenRouter offers chat and API access to models from multiple providers, while Poe offers a subscription with recurring allocations of points. Those examples illustrate different products, not a single standard aggregator plan. See OpenRouter’s pricing and usage details and the Poe Purchases FAQs for their current terms.

When a direct subscription makes more sense
You rely on one provider’s chat experience
If one provider meets your needs and you use its chat product most of the time, a direct plan may be simpler. It is also the option to investigate when you depend on that provider’s product-specific features or integrations. Check the plan’s current model access and usage limits; a subscription should not be assumed to mean unlimited use.

An integrated 350W power supply ensures stable and reliable output for demanding computing tasks and fully loaded extended configurations.
You need a provider-specific workflow
Before choosing, identify any features or workflow tied to the provider’s own product. Then confirm that the plan you are considering includes them, and whether its usage allowance is enough for your routine work.
When an aggregator makes more sense
You compare models or switch providers
A shared interface can make it convenient to try models from different providers without managing each one through a separate chat product. This is useful when you have a reason to compare outputs or choose different models for different tasks. First check that the specific models you need are available through the aggregator.

You want one API integration or model routing
An aggregator may provide a common API for applications that need access to multiple models. OpenRouter also describes routing a request to a model based on the task and a selected cost-quality tradeoff. That is a particular product feature, not a guarantee that all aggregators route automatically or that routing will suit every task. Review the OpenRouter API and Models information if this capability matters to you.

“Aggregator” does not describe one billing model. Depending on the service, you may encounter a subscription with a recurring points allocation, provider-specific usage limits, or usage-based API charges. Poe’s FAQ describes points allocated daily and/or monthly depending on the plan; OpenRouter publishes plan and usage details. Check how the particular models you expect to use consume the allowance, what happens when it runs out, and whether any additional charges apply.

- Professional AI & Creator Workstation: AMD Radeon AI PRO R9700 GPU with 32GB GDDR6 is engineered for AI development, professional content creation, and compute-intensive workloads.
- Massive 32GB Memory Capacity: 32GB of GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit bus provides ample bandwidth for large AI models, 8K video editing, and complex 3D rendering.
- Advanced RDNA 4 with AI Accelerators: 64 Compute Units with 3rd Gen Ray Tracing and dedicated 2nd Gen AI Accelerators for groundbreaking AI performance and visual computing.
- Professional Blower Cooling: Efficient single blower design exhausts heat directly out of the chassis, ideal for multi-GPU workstation and server configurations.
- Enterprise-Grade Thermal Solution: Vapor chamber heatsink with industrial Honeywell PTM7950 thermal interface material ensures reliable cooling under sustained professional loads.
There is no universal cost winner. Your total depends on how often you use the service, which models you choose, the plan’s allocation or limits, and whether you need API access. Compare the current terms against your own workload rather than assuming that one subscription covers every model or that a multi-model service will cost less.
Keep chat subscriptions and API access separate
A consumer chat subscription does not necessarily include API access. Anthropic states that a paid Claude subscription enhances the chat experience but does not include access to the Claude API or Console. If your application needs the Claude API, treat that as a separate requirement and check the current terms and charges. Do not assume another provider uses the same arrangement.

Before paying, confirm whether you need a chat product, API credentials, or both. Then verify exactly what the proposed plan includes; a subscription’s access through a chat interface is not proof that it can be used from your own software.
Check privacy and routing for the exact service
There is no established privacy winner between aggregators and direct subscriptions. Data handling can depend on the service, plan, and model endpoint receiving a request. Read the current terms for data use, retention, and routing for the precise combination you intend to use, especially if you will submit sensitive information or send requests through an intermediary.

A practical way to choose
- List your must-haves. Note the models, provider-specific features, integrations, and workflows you rely on.
- Decide whether you need chat, API access, or both. Check whether the proposed plan includes the kind of access you need.
- Check availability. Confirm that each required model and feature is offered through the direct plan or aggregator you are considering.
- Map your usage to the billing rules. Review the current allowance, model-specific costs, limits, and what happens if you exceed an allocation.
- Compare the terms that affect your work. Check data handling, retention, and routing for the chosen provider, plan, and endpoint.
If one provider’s chat features anchor your workflow, start by checking that provider’s direct plan. If you routinely test several models or need one API integration across providers, compare aggregators against your actual model choices and usage. Recheck current prices, availability, limits, and terms before subscribing because they can change.
