For reliable website captures in an AI agent workflow, separate page interaction from visual output: open the page, inspect its structure, perform the needed actions, confirm the resulting state, then save a viewport, element, full-page screenshot, or PDF. Use an inspect–interact–capture workflow
An agent needs a browser automation or capture interface; it does not need a special physical screenshot device. Playwright’s documented CLI pattern is to open a page, take an accessibility snapshot, interact using the references in that snapshot, then inspect the updated state before capturing. - Open the page. Start the browser session and navigate to the URL you need.
- Inspect the structure. Use an accessibility snapshot to identify headings, links, buttons, and other interactive elements. For a single target on a large page, Playwright CLI documentation says you can use
findinstead of taking a full snapshot. - Interact deterministically. Use the accessible references to click, fill, or otherwise change the page state.
- Re-inspect the page. Take an updated snapshot and confirm the expected content or state before saving an image. This is practical workflow advice based on the documented interaction loop, not a guarantee that the capture will be error-free.
- Choose the output and scope. Capture the viewport, a target element, or the full page; export a PDF if the output needs to be a document.
A snapshot and a screenshot answer different questions. The snapshot exposes page structure and text for interaction; a screenshot records the visual layout, including content such as canvas charts. Playwright describes screenshots as useful for visual inspection and bug documentation, and snapshots for reading text and navigating structure.

Control output size and resolution
Choose CSS-pixel or device-pixel output intentionally. The Playwright MCP screenshot tool defaults to CSS-pixel sizing and offers device-pixel scale. In the agent CLI, --hires accounts for device pixel ratio; the documentation cautions that the resulting coordinates no longer align with CSS-pixel mouse commands. Use standard scale when screenshot coordinates must correspond to page interaction coordinates, and high resolution when detail in the image matters more.
For a screenshot of a long page, full-page mode is appropriate; for a single UI component, target it rather than saving the whole page. Lazy-loaded content and changing page state can affect what appears, so inspect the page after interactions and choose the scope that matches the artifact’s purpose.
Use Playwright MCP when the browser is exposed to an agent
If the agent connects to a browser through Playwright MCP, the documented screenshot tool is browser_take_screenshot. Its options include a target selector or reference, fullPage, file format, filename, and CSS versus device scale. The Playwright MCP documentation describes these controls and notes that full-page capture cannot be combined with a target.

Use the MCP route when an AI agent already has a browser tool and needs a screenshot as part of the same browser session. Confirm the tool’s current parameter names and output handling in the documentation for the MCP version in use.
Handle screenshots and saved sessions as sensitive data
A capture may show signed-in account details, private pages, or other sensitive information. OpenAI’s computer-use guide warns that screenshots can contain sensitive page or account data. Restrict access to saved captures, keep sensitive screenshot data out of application logs, review saved browser activity, and delete the session when finished where the workflow provides that option.

The screenshot shows the wrong page state
The capture may have run before the interaction completed or before the updated page was confirmed. Follow the open, snapshot, interact, re-snapshot sequence and capture only after verifying the relevant content.
The output omits content below the fold
A viewport capture includes only what is visible. Select full-page capture for scrollable content, subject to the interface’s constraints; in Playwright MCP, do not combine full-page mode with a target element.
Coordinates do not match the screenshot
High-resolution output can use device pixels rather than CSS pixels. The Playwright CLI documentation warns that --hires coordinates do not align with CSS-pixel mouse commands. Use standard scale if coordinate correspondence is important.

The target element is hard to locate
Inspect the accessibility snapshot for a reference, or use the CLI’s documented find approach when a full snapshot is unnecessary. Verify the target after interaction before taking the screenshot.
The PDF layout differs from expectations
The reviewed CLI documentation establishes PDF export and a custom filename, not identical pagination or rendering across interfaces. Check the specific Playwright interface and version you’re running rather than assuming screenshot options also apply to PDF.
A capture contains private content
Restrict who can access the image or PDF, avoid writing sensitive capture data to logs, and remove saved activity or the browser session when the workflow is complete if those controls are available.
