How Much Storage and RAM Does an Offline AI Language Tutor Need?

Offline AI tutors need room for more than a model download. Compare published Android model-file and resident-memory measurements, then plan for speech, lessons, and updates.

There is no single universal minimum. For a phone-based offline tutor, a useful starting point is a compact, quantized language model—but its download size is not the same as the RAM it needs while running. In Android Open Source Project tests on a OnePlus 12, quantized Llama 3.2 1B files were about 1.1 GB and used 1.9–2.3 GB of resident memory; quantized 3B files were about 2.4–2.5 GB and used 3.7–4.1 GB. Those figures cover model and inference measurements, not a complete tutor with speech, lessons, and app data.

Storage and RAM are different budgets

Storage holds the downloaded model and other files. RAM is needed while the model generates a response, alongside the app, runtime, operating system, conversation state, and other active processes. A model file’s size therefore cannot be used as a direct estimate of peak memory use.

Model, quantization, runtime, context length, backend, and device all affect actual use. Published measurements describe specific configurations, not guaranteed requirements for every phone or tutor.

What published mobile measurements show

The Android Open Source Project documents ExecuTorch Llama 3.2 measurements using XNNPACK and 4-bit groupwise quantization. On a OnePlus 12, the 1B and 3B measurements used a 64-token prompt. The project identifies its ExecuTorch version as v1.0.1-rc1.

  • REAL-TIME VOICE TRANSLATION: Choose two of 165 supported languages in the ConTutor App. When used with a stable internet connection, CT-06 identifies which selected language is being spoken and plays translated audio through its built-in speaker, with responses as fast as 0.5 seconds.
  • NO SUBSCRIPTION: Connect the portable translator to most iOS and Android phones or tablets with Bluetooth 6.0. The app and internet access are required during use; offline translation is not supported.
  • AI-ASSISTED LANGUAGE PRACTICE: Use it for trips, business meetings, classrooms, and bilingual family conversations. For clearer recognition, speak with in 3.3 ft or 1 m in a quiet setting.
  • SMART VOICE CONTROLS: Hold the microphone button to start or stop translation, adjust the device volume, and play or pause audio. The 400 mAh battery provides up to 12 hours of use, 35 hours of standby, and a full charge in about 1 hour via USB-C (5 V/1 A).
  • WEARABLE TRANSLATOR: The compact 1.44 oz device measures 2.36 x 2.36 x 0.39 inches. Use the collar clip or included lanyard to keep it accessible while traveling, working, or shopping.

These are model-file and inference measurements, not a complete phone-storage or whole-app RAM budget. The tests were run on a 16 GB OnePlus 12; the documentation says the unquantized 3B BF16 model was tested only on that device because it had sufficient memory. See the Android Open Source Project ExecuTorch Llama example documentation for its configuration and measurements.

Model sizes vary widely

Google’s LiteRT-LM supported-model catalog illustrates how much model-file sizes can differ. These catalog figures are model sizes, not complete tutor requirements or a ranking of suitability for language learning.

Budget for the tutor around the model

A complete offline tutor can store and run more than its language model. Its additional needs depend on the features and implementation, and the cited sources do not publish a combined total for a tutor that includes speech, lessons, and local data.

  • [SCENARIO-BASED CONVERSATIONS] Simulates real-life workplace, travel, and everyday dialogue scenarios through the mobile App. Helps users overcome "mute" language learning with interactive, personalized vocabulary and speech practice.
  • App and inference runtime: The app, runtime, tokenizer, and configuration files take storage; active processes also consume memory.
  • Speech input and output: Offline speech recognition and synthesis may require their own models and processing capacity.
  • Lessons and audio: Downloaded explanations, exercises, and audio add to storage needs.
  • Conversation and local data: Conversation state and saved learning data affect runtime memory or storage depending on how the app handles them.
  • Updates: Installing or updating a model may temporarily require room for downloaded files alongside existing app or model data.

Leave free capacity beyond the model-file figure for those components and for updates. Treat any extra allowance as a planning buffer rather than a published universal requirement: the right amount depends on the tutor and the device you intend to support.

How to choose a phone and model

  1. Set the offline feature scope. Decide whether the tutor needs text chat only or also speech recognition, speech synthesis, downloadable lessons, and persistent local history.
  2. Compare model storage with peak memory. Use measurements for the specific model, quantization, runtime, and device where available; do not infer RAM from download size alone.
  3. Test tutoring quality and speed. A smaller or quantized model may fit a tighter device envelope, but the useful choice depends on whether its answers and response time work for the target language and learner.
  4. Check the actual target device and backend. RAM capacity alone does not establish compatibility or performance. Verify the runtime, operating system, and accelerator/backend against the intended phones.
  5. Plan installation and updates. Account for how the app delivers models, whether they are installed with the app or downloaded later, and how much free storage remains during updates.

As a concrete reference point—not a universal requirement—the OnePlus 12 used for the cited ExecuTorch tests has 16 GB of RAM. A different phone may produce different results even with the same nominal model size.

Android model delivery has separate limits

Google Play’s beta Play for On-device AI system supports install-time, fast-follow, and on-demand model delivery, as well as device targeting based on RAM. Its documented limit is 1.5 GB compressed per AI pack, with a 4 GB maximum cumulative app size. These are distribution limits, not model RAM requirements or a guarantee of installed storage size. A model larger than the individual pack limit may need a different delivery or packaging approach. Details are in Google Android Developers’ Play for On-device AI documentation.

Can the tutor work without internet?

Yes, an offline tutor is feasible if the required model and other assets are available on the device and the app is built to run them locally. Google describes AI Edge Gallery as an experimental app that runs generative AI entirely offline. That demonstrates feasibility; it does not mean every tutor feature or model works offline by default. The tutor’s own speech, content, and download design determine what remains usable without a connection.
