Use a different repair for each sound: profile-based Noise Reduction for steady hiss, a narrow notch filter for a stable hum or whistle, Click Removal for short spikes, and Repair for a single tiny defect. Work on a copy, make modest changes, and compare the result with the original; if the transfer itself is at fault, correcting playback conditions may help more than heavier processing.
Identify the noise before choosing an effect
Listen to quiet gaps as well as busy passages. Continuous broadband hiss, a steady tonal hum or whistle, and brief clicks are distinct problems; applying one effect to all of them can damage wanted audio without fixing the noise.

- Steady hiss: a continuous wash of noise, best suited to profile-based Noise Reduction when you can find a representative noise-only sample.
- Tonal hum, buzz, or whistle: a stable tone concentrated around a particular frequency, often better suited to a narrow notch filter.
- Clicks: brief, sharp spikes scattered through a passage; use Click Removal for a longer selection or Repair for one very small defect.
Audacity describes cleanup as a fidelity trade-off: every effect can remove wanted detail along with the problem sound. The Audacity Noise Removal & Repair manual cautions that these effects trade fidelity against the noise they remove.
Remove a steady hiss with a noise profile
Audacity’s Noise Reduction is a two-pass effect. First, select a representative stretch that contains only the hiss—no speech or music—and capture its noise profile. Then select the audio to clean and apply the effect modestly. A profile contaminated by wanted sound can cause the effect to treat that sound as noise.

- Select a noise-only section in the waveform.
- Open Effect > Noise Removal and Repair > Noise Reduction and choose Get Noise Profile. Effect names or menu placement may vary by Audacity version.
- Select the passage or recording you want to clean, reopen Noise Reduction, and apply a restrained amount.
- Audition both the processed audio and the noise-only output, where available. If speech or music is recognizable in the noise-only output, back off the processing.
The Audacity Noise Reduction manual says the effect can address constant sounds such as hiss, hum, whistle, whine, and buzz, but is not intended for individual clicks or irregular noise. It may not produce a satisfactory result if the noise is loud or varies, if wanted audio is close to the noise level, or if the noise and wanted audio occupy overlapping frequencies. A modest reduction that leaves some hiss can sound better than eliminating the hiss at the cost of metallic or watery artifacts.
Target a stable hum, buzz, or whistle with a notch filter
A narrow, steady tone differs from broadband tape hiss. Try a notch filter aimed at the offending frequency before broadband Noise Reduction when appropriate; Audacity recommends this approach for mains hum or a high-pitched whistle. A notch attenuates a narrow band rather than the whole noise floor.

Inspect the spectrum or listen carefully to locate the tone, then check the cleaned passage for remaining harmonics. Keep the notch narrow: a broad cut can remove useful speech or musical notes that share those frequencies. Audacity’s Notch Filter manual describes its use for a specific tonal frequency.

Remove clicks without softening wanted transients
Use Click Removal for scattered spikes
Click Removal scans a longer selection for short, sharp spikes. Start with the default or conservative settings, then listen to a busy passage. More aggressive settings can catch additional defects but may soften real transients, including drum hits, consonants, or picked strings. The Audacity Click Removal manual explains the effect and its controls.

Use Repair for one very short defect
For a click that remains, zoom in and select only the damaged samples, then try Repair. Audacity limits Repair to at most 128 samples and requires undamaged audio on both sides of the selected fragment so it can reconstruct the gap. It cannot repair a fault at the very beginning or end of a clip. See the Audacity Repair manual for the effect’s limits.
Follow a cautious cleanup order
- Preserve an untouched copy of the digitized file; edit a duplicate or keep undo available.
- Listen through the recording and classify the problems. Check quiet gaps for hiss or hum and busy sections for clicks and damage to transients.
- If you hear a stable hum or whistle, try a narrow notch and check that it has not removed wanted audio.
- Run Click Removal conservatively across passages with scattered spikes. Use Repair only for individual tiny defects that remain.
- For steady hiss, build a profile from a representative noise-only section and apply modest Noise Reduction to the needed audio.
- Clean before levelling or equalisation. Later level changes can raise whatever noise remains.
- Compare the processed copy with the original at matched loudness. If the result sounds metallic, watery, softened, or otherwise less natural, undo or reduce the processing.
Matched-loudness comparison is a practical way to judge whether cleanup helped; the Audacity manuals caution about fidelity but do not prescribe a formal listening-test protocol.

When the cassette transfer is the underlying problem
Some noise or tonal problems come from the playback and digitization conditions, not just the file. Audacity’s sample workflow for tape digitization notes that the need for noise reduction depends on tape quality, azimuth setting, tape-head cleanliness, and Dolby settings. If the cassette is still available and you can make another transfer, check those factors rather than trying to compensate with increasingly aggressive effects. For an existing digitized recording, the file-level methods above remain the available options.
