For a Mac purchased mainly for Windows gaming, 24GB of memory and 1TB of storage are the more comfortable baseline. Choose 32GB or more when you expect demanding AAA games, high-fidelity settings, streaming, mods, development tools, or several heavy applications open at once.
Apple silicon Macs run Windows games through an Arm version of Windows in a virtual machine such as Parallels Desktop, or through a Windows compatibility layer such as CrossOver. That means memory and storage are shared among macOS, the Windows environment, graphics workloads, and the game itself. More RAM or a larger SSD cannot solve a title that fails because of graphics APIs, drivers, launchers, or anti-cheat software, so check each game’s compatibility as well as its hardware needs.

These are purchase targets, not guarantees of a particular frame rate. The game’s graphics API, translation layer, anti-cheat system and launcher can be a harder limit than the Mac’s memory capacity.
Why Apple silicon changes the Windows-gaming calculation
Apple silicon uses unified memory: the same pool is shared by macOS, the CPU, the integrated GPU, a Windows virtual machine or compatibility layer, and the game. A Mac advertised with 16GB does not reserve 16GB exclusively for the game. macOS and background services consume part of the pool, while a virtual machine also needs memory for Windows itself.

Parallels Desktop’s 2026 documentation says Apple-silicon Macs support only Arm operating-system versions and recommends 16GB of RAM or more for best performance. Its exact wording is: “Only Arm versions of operating systems are supported.” Parallels says it is authorized by Microsoft to run Arm versions of Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise on Apple-silicon Macs.
Windows 11 Arm can run some x86 software through Microsoft’s translation technology, but behavior varies by title. A game may launch and run well, run with graphical defects, or fail because it expects an unsupported driver or anti-cheat component. Treat the operating-system architecture as a compatibility requirement before treating RAM as a performance upgrade.
How much RAM each gaming scenario needs
16GB: the workable entry point
Sixteen gigabytes is the minimum sensible purchase for this use. It matches Parallels’ “16GB of RAM or more” best-performance guidance and is also the memory tier documented for a base M1 configuration of Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, targeting about 30 frames per second at roughly 900p.
On a 16GB Mac, keep the workload focused. Close large browser sessions, video editors, containers and other memory-heavy applications before starting a virtual machine. Watch macOS Memory Pressure in Activity Monitor rather than relying only on the amount shown as “free”; sustained yellow or red pressure indicates that the system is compressing or swapping memory.

Sixteen gigabytes is less forgiving when Windows, a launcher, a modern game and macOS applications all run concurrently. It is a reasonable floor for a carefully managed setup, not the best long-term choice for a Mac bought primarily for gaming.
24GB: the sensible mainstream target
Twenty-four gigabytes gives macOS and Windows room to coexist while you keep a browser, chat application, launcher or utility open. It is the best balance for most people who want regular Windows gaming without paying for a workstation-class memory configuration.
Because unified memory is also used for graphics, the extra capacity helps avoid contention when textures, shader caches and game assets are loaded. It does not create a separate graphics-memory pool, and it cannot add support for a missing graphics API or driver.

The published Cyberpunk 2077 tiers illustrate why capacity can rise quickly: CD Projekt Red’s requirements, reported by Tom’s Hardware in 2025, list 18GB of unified memory with an M3 Pro for a 1080p/60fps target and at least 36GB for higher-fidelity tiers. Those figures describe that game’s stated targets, not a universal requirement for every Windows title, but they show why 16GB is not a comfortable ceiling for ambitious settings.
How much SSD storage Windows gaming consumes
What the operating system and tools require
Parallels requires at least 16GB of additional disk space for a Windows guest and specifies an SSD for best-performance workloads. That 16GB is a minimum allocation, not a realistic allowance for Windows updates, applications, restore points and games.
CrossOver’s guide lists 1GB of disk space for the application on Intel or Apple-silicon Macs running macOS 10.15 or later, with additional space required for Windows applications. A compatibility layer avoids the fixed overhead of a complete Windows desktop, but each bottle still needs the game’s installation files, patches and shader or cache data.
Modern game sizes set the real requirement
Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition requires at least 92GB free for Steam, Epic Games Store or GOG installations, according to the requirements reported by Tom’s Hardware in 2025. The App Store edition requires nearly 160GB. Updates may need additional temporary working space, so a drive that is exactly the listed size can still fail during installation or patching.

Keep meaningful free capacity on the SSD for macOS updates, virtual-memory swap, Windows updates and game patches. Filling an SSD to its practical limit can also make file operations and updates slower, even when an installer technically reports enough space.
Storage tiers to choose from

A fast 1TB USB-C portable SSD is the most useful capacity supplement when the Mac’s internal drive is small. Store virtual-machine bundles, game libraries, installers and backups on it. It increases available space, not RAM or graphics performance, and should be formatted and connected reliably before placing a VM on it. Keep free space on both the internal and external drives rather than filling either one completely.

Compare the two approaches on four separate axes: whether your game is supported, how much unified memory remains after the Windows layer starts, how much storage the environment and library occupy, and whether the title’s graphics and anti-cheat technology works through that path. A smaller memory footprint does not make an incompatible game playable.

- Confirm the architecture. Use an Arm build of Windows 11 supported by your virtualization software. Apple-silicon Macs do not use Intel Windows images in this setup; Parallels documents Arm operating systems as the supported option.
- Reserve storage before installing. Start with more than the 16GB guest-space minimum. Account for Windows updates, the launcher, the game, patch staging space and the free capacity macOS needs.
- Place large VM bundles on the fastest suitable SSD. An internal SSD is simplest. If capacity requires an external USB-C SSD, keep it attached during play and backups, and avoid disconnecting it while the VM is running.
- Set memory and CPU conservatively. Do not assign nearly all unified memory or every available core to Windows. macOS needs resources for graphics, input, audio, file services and background tasks. On Parallels Standard, remember the documented ceiling of 8GB vRAM and 4 vCPUs per VM.
- Install the game and test before buying expansions. Launch the title, load a demanding area and test its launcher, graphics options and multiplayer or anti-cheat path. A successful installer does not prove that gameplay or online services will work.
- Measure while playing. Check Activity Monitor’s Memory Pressure and swap use, and observe frame pacing in the game. If pressure stays high, close applications or lower settings before concluding that more storage is needed.
Using CrossOver efficiently
- Check the specific title and version. Compatibility is per game, launcher and sometimes update, so do not infer support from another Windows application.
- Create the bottle on the drive with adequate free space. Reserve room for the game’s installation, updates, shader caches and saved data in addition to CrossOver’s 1GB application requirement.
- Install only the components the game needs. Extra runtimes and launchers consume storage and can introduce conflicts; follow the title’s documented instructions.
- Test graphics and online functions separately. A game that runs in single-player may still fail when its anti-cheat or multiplayer service loads.
Common failure modes and practical fixes
The game will not install
Check free space on the volume containing the VM or bottle, not just the Mac’s total capacity. A 92GB game can need additional temporary space while unpacking or patching. Move the library or VM to a larger SSD, remove unused installers and retry with a substantial free-space margin.

macOS becomes sluggish during play
Look at Memory Pressure and swap in Activity Monitor. Close browsers and creative applications, reduce the VM’s assigned memory if it is starving macOS, or move to a Mac with 24GB or 32GB unified memory. Adding external storage will not correct memory pressure.
Performance is poor despite enough RAM
Verify that the title’s graphics API is supported by the chosen path and that the game is running at a realistic resolution. Parallels’ virtual graphics limits, translation overhead and the game’s rendering requirements can dominate performance. Lowering texture quality, resolution or effects may help; more RAM is not a substitute for missing API or driver support.
Online play or launchers fail
Anti-cheat drivers and launchers often depend on low-level Windows components. Test the exact game version in Arm Windows or CrossOver before committing to a large installation. If the title requires an unsupported driver, neither a larger SSD nor additional unified memory will make that implementation work.
An external SSD disconnects
Use a reliable USB-C cable and a drive with a sustained-performance rating suitable for large sequential transfers. Eject the volume only after shutting down the VM and closing the game launcher. Keep backups of VM bundles and save files because a disconnected or damaged volume can affect the entire guest environment.
