Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Choose NAS capacity from the media you plan to keep, then add room for growth and account separately for redundancy and backups. For networking, Jellyfin recommends a wired gigabit connection or faster for the server; remote streaming depends on your upload capacity and the bitrate each client needs. Neither Plex nor Jellyfin sets one universal library size or bandwidth figure for every home.
How much storage should you plan for?
Start with your own collection rather than a generic terabyte target. The official Plex and Jellyfin guidance does not prescribe a universal media-library capacity: file sizes vary, and your future additions matter as much as what you already own.

- Estimate the combined size of the films, shows, music, and other media you intend to keep.
- Add capacity for the library growth you expect.
- Account separately for any redundancy arrangement and for a separate backup or second copy, if you choose to keep one.
- Check usable capacity for the NAS and drive arrangement you select; do not treat a RAID array as a backup.
Keep media capacity distinct from space for the server software and its working data. Jellyfin’s hardware-selection guide recommends a 100 GB SSD for the operating system, Jellyfin files, and transcoding cache; that is a software and cache recommendation, not a target size for the media volume. Jellyfin’s storage guidance also discusses database placement and space for database and transcoding needs.
How fast must the storage be?
For serving media files, compare the storage’s sequential read capability with the bitrate of the media being played. Jellyfin’s Hardware Selection guide says: “Anything with higher sequential access speed than bitrate of media is acceptable.” That makes the largest bitrate you expect to serve a more useful check than buying storage for an arbitrary speed target.

This is a file-serving throughput rule, not a guarantee that every part of the NAS will be fast enough for every workload. Running the media server, database, and transcoding may introduce separate compute, memory, or storage demands.
What network speed do you need for local playback?
For a Jellyfin server, plan on wired gigabit Ethernet or faster. Jellyfin does not recommend Wi-Fi or powerline for the server. Actual network load depends on the bitrate of the media and how many streams run at once, so consider the combined traffic across the server link and the rest of your home network. The gigabit recommendation is a planning baseline, not a promise of a specific number of simultaneous streams.

What upload speed do you need for remote streaming?
Remote playback relies on the server-side internet connection’s upload capacity as well as each client’s requested bitrate. Jellyfin recommends at least 20 Mbps upload for remote access, but that is not a guaranteed allowance for a particular number of users or for high-bitrate streams. Compare the available upload capacity with the bitrates of the streams you expect to serve concurrently.
Plex notes that a remote connection or configured stream limit that cannot sustain the file’s bitrate may require transcoding. A lower-bitrate converted stream may fit where the original does not, but only if the server can transcode it. See Plex’s bandwidth and transcoding limits guidance.

Will clients Direct Play, or will the server transcode?
Direct Play lets a compatible client play the media without the server converting it. Whether this works depends on what the client can handle, including the media’s codec and playback requirements. If the client cannot play the file as supplied, the server may need to convert it; Plex explains the distinctions in its Direct Play, Direct Stream, and Transcoding overview.
Storage capacity alone cannot answer whether a NAS can serve your library smoothly. If you expect frequent transcoding, assess the server’s CPU or GPU capability and software support separately from the drive pool. Plex cautions that NAS capabilities vary, and some systems—particularly some ARM models—may not support transcoding. Check the relevant Plex NAS limitations guidance and your specific model before relying on it. Jellyfin also documents transcoding and hardware acceleration.

Put the requirements together
| Use case | What to size or check |
|---|---|
| Media library | Estimated media size plus expected growth; account separately for redundancy and backups. |
| Media reads | Sequential storage throughput above the bitrate of the media being served, per Jellyfin’s guidance. |
| Local streams | Aggregate bitrate of simultaneous streams against the wired server link and home network; Jellyfin’s baseline is gigabit Ethernet or faster. |
| Remote streams | Server upload capacity against each remote stream’s bitrate; Jellyfin recommends at least 20 Mbps upload for remote access, not as a per-user guarantee. |
| Transcoding | Client compatibility, server compute and hardware acceleration support, and any extra workspace needs. |
These checks address different bottlenecks. A larger disk pool does not increase internet upload speed, and faster networking does not make an incompatible client able to Direct Play a file.
