What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Windows 11 requires at least 4 GB of RAM, but that is an installation minimum—not a comfortable target for most people. Microsoft recommends 8 GB for longer-term everyday use and says 16 GB or more may suit photo and video editing or other demanding projects. For gaming and multitasking, the right amount depends on the specific game and the other apps you keep open.
Windows 11 RAM requirements versus practical needs
Microsoft lists 4 GB of RAM as the minimum system requirement for Windows 11. That figure establishes a baseline for eligibility; it does not mean a PC with 4 GB will feel responsive under every workload. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements.

RAM is short-term memory: Windows and apps load the data they are actively using into it so they can access it faster than they could from storage. When memory is limited, having more apps open at once can contribute to slowdowns. Microsoft summarizes the trade-off this way: “The more memory a device has, the more it can do at the same time without slowdowns in performance.” Its general memory guidance distinguishes everyday use from more demanding work.
How much RAM to choose for each workload
| Use | Guidance | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 eligibility | 4 GB minimum | This is Microsoft’s formal system requirement, not a comfort recommendation. |
| Browsing, documents, and streaming | Microsoft says to aim for at least 4 GB and recommends 8 GB for longer-term use. | 8 GB is the clearer everyday-use target if you want more room than the minimum provides. |
| Gaming | No single universal RAM figure is established by the cited sources. | Check the game’s minimum and recommended specifications, then account for Windows and any other apps open while playing. |
| Photo or video editing and other high-performance projects | Microsoft says 16 GB or more may be a good fit. | This is workload-dependent guidance, not a guarantee that every project will run smoothly. |
| Multitasking | There is no single minimum that fits every mix of apps. | More RAM can help when you use more programs at the same time; the number and demands of those programs matter. |
Microsoft’s figures are broad guidance, and individual apps or hardware may need more. Its everyday-use guidance and workload examples are explained in All about computer memory.

Is 8 GB enough for Windows 11?
For browsing, documents, and streaming, 8 GB is Microsoft’s recommendation for keeping a device running longer term. It is a sensible general-purpose target for those tasks, but it does not guarantee that every demanding app or a large set of simultaneously open programs will perform well.
If you already have a PC with 8 GB, consider what you actually run together. A browser with many active tabs, a video call, and other applications compete for system resources. If you regularly edit large photo or video projects or keep demanding apps open alongside games, Microsoft’s guidance points to 16 GB or more as a better fit for those workloads.

- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
- VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
- A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
- A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
How much RAM do you need for gaming?
There is no universal amount that guarantees a good experience across all PC games. Check each game’s own minimum and recommended system specifications, and remember that its listed system RAM is separate from graphics-card video memory (VRAM). Also account for apps you plan to leave open while playing.

Steam Support warns that when a system runs low on memory, “your game or Steam might start being swapped to disk which can cause repeated frame rate hitches.” Steam also says that with 16+ GB of memory, Windows can cache many files, helping level loads and game relaunches. Those observations describe memory pressure and caching; they are not a promise of a particular frame rate or proof that 16 GB is enough for every game. See Steam’s hardware troubleshooting guidance.

Do not choose a memory kit based only on the fact that a PC runs Windows 11. Microsoft advises checking with the PC manufacturer or a retailer about options for some systems below 4 GB; upgradeability and compatibility depend on the exact device. Before buying, identify the exact PC or motherboard model and verify:
