You can restore several everyday conveniences in Windows 11 without extra software: move Start to the left, hide taskbar buttons, and reorganize the Start menu using built-in settings. Other changes—such as a smaller taskbar or expanded right-click menu controls—have been announced for Windows Insiders, so they may not be available on your version yet. These adjustments recover specific options, not the entire Windows 10 interface.
Move the Start button and taskbar icons to the left
To move the Start button to the left in Windows 11, open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors. Set Taskbar alignment to Left. Start follows the taskbar alignment, so its button moves with the other taskbar icons. Windows 11 uses centered alignment by default. Microsoft’s taskbar instructions and Start menu instructions document the setting.

Hide Search, Widgets, and Task View from the taskbar
Open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar. Under Taskbar items, switch Widgets and Task view off if you do not want their buttons displayed. For Search, choose whether it appears as a search box, an icon with a label, an icon only, or is hidden. You can also unpin apps you do not want on the taskbar and drag pinned apps to rearrange them.
These controls hide or reorder taskbar items; they do not bring back every feature or layout of the Windows 10 taskbar. Microsoft’s taskbar customization guide lists the documented options.

Start customization lets you control what appears in its pinned-app area, app list, recommendations, and account area. Open Settings > Personalization > Start to review available options.
- Reorder or remove pins: Right-click a pinned app to unpin it, or drag pins into the order you prefer.
- Group related pins: Drag one pin onto another to create a folder, then add or rearrange related apps.
- Change the installed-app view: Choose Category, Grid, or List where those view options are available.
- Adjust recommendations: Use the Start settings to control Recommended content.

Microsoft documents these controls in its Start menu customization guide. Available choices can depend on the Windows build.

Can you restore the old right-click menu?
The current Microsoft taskbar and Start support instructions do not describe a universal Settings switch that restores the full Windows 10 context menu. Microsoft’s August 17, 2026 Windows Insider Blog announced a customizable context-menu experience, with controls to toggle built-in commands and choose whether app extensions appear in the main menu or a submenu. The announcement does not establish that the feature is available on every Windows 11 PC; check your build and Insider channel before looking for it.

How to make the Windows 11 taskbar smaller
Microsoft’s May 15, 2026 Windows Insider Blog described a compact taskbar option with smaller icons and a shorter taskbar, intended to provide more vertical workspace. At announcement time, Microsoft said the experience was rolling out in the Experimental channel. The post also described planned Start layout changes for Insiders. These are rollout-dependent announcements, not instructions for a setting guaranteed to exist on every Windows 11 installation. Check Microsoft’s May 15, 2026 Insider announcement and your own Windows build and channel for current availability.

For managed or advanced configurations, Microsoft Learn documents values related to Start layout, recent apps and recommended content, taskbar badges, button grouping, and multi-monitor taskbar behavior. The reference is technical guidance, not proof that every value has a matching Settings control or that a registry change restores all older interface features. Prefer the normal Settings interface when it provides the change you need, and do not treat registry edits as a universal Windows 10 interface restore.
