Choose the ElevenLabs connection based on when your text is ready: use HTTP audio streaming when you have the complete text, and use the TTS WebSocket when text arrives incrementally and audio should start before it is complete. In Electron, keep network I/O asynchronous, keep credentials and privileged APIs out of the renderer, and move substantial CPU-bound work off the main process UI thread.
Choose HTTP streaming or a WebSocket based on your text
Both approaches stream audio, but they suit different input patterns. HTTP streaming is the simpler choice when the complete text is available at request time. ElevenLabs progressively returns audio bytes, which your app can consume as they arrive rather than waiting for the entire response. See ElevenLabs’ Streaming API reference and streaming text-to-speech guide.

Use the realtime TTS WebSocket when text itself arrives in pieces—for example, from a live generation process—and you want to submit incremental text while receiving audio chunks. That adds connection and message-handling complexity, but can let speech begin before all text exists. The one-voice TTS WebSocket is distinct from ElevenLabs’ dialogue WebSocket; use the dialogue endpoint only if its multi-speaker format and model fit your application. Compare the options in ElevenLabs’ TTS vs. TTD WebSockets guide.

|---|---|---|
| When is the text available? | The complete text is ready before the request. | Text arrives incrementally and can be sent in chunks. |
| What does the service stream back? | Progressive audio bytes in the response. | Audio chunks over the WebSocket. |
| Typical fit | Read-aloud of a completed article, message, or generated answer. | Speech that should begin while text is still being produced. |
| Integration trade-off | Usually the more straightforward streaming path. | Requires managing a live connection and incremental input/output. |
For realtime TTS, model compatibility matters: ElevenLabs’ current endpoint documentation says /text-to-speech/{voice_id}/stream-input does not support eleven_v3 or eleven_v4. Check the current WebSocket API reference and supported-model information when choosing a model, because availability can change. The realtime guide uses eleven_flash_v2_5 as a latency-oriented example; that is an example, not a universal recommendation.

Keep network and audio work off Electron’s UI thread
Electron’s main process owns the app’s UI thread. Synchronous work there can freeze the interface, so use asynchronous network and disk APIs and avoid synchronous IPC. Audio transport should not require the main thread to wait for a response or perform a long-running task. Electron’s performance guidance recommends keeping the main process responsive and moving long CPU-heavy work to worker threads or another process when appropriate.
A useful division is: the renderer handles the interface and playback; a narrow preload bridge exposes only the actions the UI needs; and a trusted process performs the authenticated ElevenLabs request. If audio must cross a process boundary in chunks, consider a MessagePort where it suits your design. Electron’s process model and UtilityProcess API describe the available process options, including hosting Node.js work separately and communicating with a renderer through MessagePorts.

Great computer recording mic for gamers/streamers/youtubers focus on the main source and reduces background noise. The streaming microphone does the job well for broadcast ,OBS and teamspeak.
Keep ElevenLabs credentials out of renderer content
Streaming requests require credentials. Do not put a long-lived ElevenLabs API key in renderer JavaScript or expose it through a broad bridge: renderer content is the less-trusted side of Electron’s process boundary. Instead, let the renderer request an operation such as “speak this text,” and have privileged code attach the credential and make the request. For applications that must not ship a reusable service key to clients, use a trusted backend to authorize or perform the request.

Electron’s IPC guide explains cross-process communication, and its sandbox documentation describes how sandboxed renderers delegate privileged work. The right trust boundary depends on whether the app is desktop-only, loads remote content, or uses a backend, but renderer code should not receive privileges it does not need.

Implement the streaming path in manageable stages
1. Decide how text reaches the request
If the full string exists already, start with the HTTP streaming endpoint. If your app produces text progressively and wants speech to overlap generation, use the realtime TTS WebSocket and send supported incremental input. Do not select the dialogue WebSocket merely because it also streams; it serves dialogue-specific use cases.
2. Route a user action through a narrow bridge
Expose a specific operation such as startSpeech(text) or cancelSpeech(requestId) from preload code. Validate the input and associate it with the requesting window or session. Keep the ElevenLabs key in the privileged process or a trusted backend, not in the renderer.

- Solid Construction--Adopting premium metal pipe and heavy-duty ABS stand to make sure that you will be satisfied with our computer mic quality
3. Consume bytes or chunks progressively
For HTTP, read the response body incrementally instead of converting the entire response to one completed buffer before playback. For WebSocket TTS, handle incoming audio chunks as they arrive while continuing to send text according to the endpoint’s message format. The renderer needs a playback path that accepts the chosen audio format and can make useful use of arriving data.

There is no single universally correct browser audio buffering recipe established for every Electron app. The format, playback API, buffering strategy, and whether chunks can be played directly depend on the endpoint response and your application. Validate those choices with your selected Electron version and target platforms rather than assuming arbitrary chunks can be concatenated or played independently.

4. Offload CPU-heavy work only when it warrants it
Asynchronous I/O generally does not justify adding another process by itself. First profile where time is spent. If decoding, conversion, or other CPU-bound processing measurably affects responsiveness, move it to a worker thread or consider a UtilityProcess. Keep the main process responsible for coordination rather than doing sustained computation on its UI thread.
5. Treat lifecycle and flow control as part of the design
A production implementation should explicitly handle user cancellation, network and service errors, slow consumers, cleanup, and window shutdown. Stop producing or forwarding audio when playback is canceled or the destination disappears, and close WebSocket or stream resources when they are no longer needed. The exact backpressure mechanism depends on your transport and playback pipeline; test it under slow playback and interrupted connections instead of assuming that every consumer can keep up.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Tune for start latency without sacrificing natural speech
Streaming can reduce the wait before playback, but chunk scheduling is a trade-off: smaller chunks may reduce latency while harming quality or naturalness. Begin with the service defaults, then tune against the experience you want—time to first audible speech, continuity, and perceived speech quality. ElevenLabs discusses these trade-offs in its audio streaming overview and latency optimization guide. Treat any latency result as application-specific; no universal timing target or benchmark is established for your Electron app by the endpoint documentation.
Quick Recap
Common integration mistakes to avoid
- Waiting for all audio: buffering the complete response before playback gives up the principal benefit of streaming.
- Blocking the main process: synchronous requests or sustained CPU work can stall the interface.
- Exposing the API key: a renderer-facing key or unrestricted bridge weakens the privilege boundary.
- Sending unsupported models to realtime TTS: verify model compatibility for the current endpoint before release.
- Assuming every chunk is independently playable: confirm format and playback behavior in your own pipeline.
- Ignoring cancellation and backpressure: a stream needs defined behavior when the user stops, the window closes, or playback falls behind.
