For everyday browsing, email, documents, and ordinary office apps on a Windows PC, 8 GB of RAM is a sensible baseline. Choose 16 GB if you regularly keep many demanding tabs open while using office apps, video calls, or other programs. The 4 GB figures you may see are software minimums—not a promise of comfortable multitasking.
How much RAM should you get?
Use your workload, not a fixed browser-tab count, to choose. There is no universal number of tabs that requires a particular amount of RAM: demanding web apps, other running programs, and the computer’s operating system all affect memory use.

| Memory | Best fit | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| 4 GB | Basic use or meeting a listed software requirement | Microsoft lists 4 GB as the minimum for Windows 11 and Office 2024. Its general guidance also says at least 4 GB may suit primarily browsing, document work, or streaming. A minimum or basic-use target is not a multitasking guarantee. |
| 8 GB | Typical browsing, email, documents, and ordinary office work | A practical baseline for a new everyday-use Windows computer. Microsoft recommends 8 GB to keep a device running long term. |
| 16 GB | Frequent multitasking across many tabs, office apps, calls, and other programs | A workload-based recommendation for more headroom, not an official universal minimum. Microsoft says 16 GB or more may suit photo or video editing and other high-performance projects. |
The software figures above are published requirements or Microsoft guidance, not results from an independent performance test. They describe particular software or broad use cases; they do not account for every app and background task a person may run at once.
Why 4 GB minimum does not necessarily feel comfortable
Microsoft lists 4 GB as the minimum RAM for Windows 11, and its Office 2024 requirements list 4 GB for both Windows and macOS. Those figures tell you the listed software requirement; they do not mean a computer with 4 GB will feel smooth with a browser, several web apps, desktop Office, and background software open together. Microsoft notes that specific features, apps, and added hardware may exceed Windows 11’s minimum requirements.
#1 Best Overall
- A-Tech 16GB RAM Module, DDR4 SO-DIMM 260-Pin, 3200MHz PC4-25600 (PC4-3200AA)
- Non-ECC Unbuffered, JEDEC DDR4 Standard 1.2V Operating Voltage
- Compatible with select Laptop, Notebook, Mini PC, and All-in-One (AIO) systems. Please verify your system's memory type, form factor, and maximum supported capacity before purchasing
- Not compatible with desktop DIMM, non DDR4 memory, or ECC memory types such as RDIMM, LRDIMM, and ECC UDIMM
- Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.
Microsoft’s broader memory advice makes a different distinction: it says at least 4 GB can be a target for primarily browsing, documents, or streaming, but recommends 8 GB to keep a device running long term. That is why 8 GB is the more useful starting point for ordinary new-PC buying advice, even though 4 GB appears in minimums.
When 8 GB is enough—and when to choose 16 GB
Choose 8 GB for a lighter everyday workload
Eight gigabytes is a reasonable fit if your usual routine is browsing, email, writing documents, spreadsheets, and switching among a modest number of apps. It leaves more room than a minimum-spec system without treating heavier creative or professional workloads as ordinary office use.

Choose 16 GB for regular simultaneous workloads
Consider 16 GB if you commonly leave many demanding tabs or web apps open while also running desktop office software, video meetings, or other programs. It gives you more headroom for concurrent work. This is practical workload guidance, not a claim that a particular number of tabs needs 16 GB or that every computer will perform a specific percentage faster.

Microsoft identifies 16 GB or more as a possible fit for photo or video editing and other high-performance projects; those workloads may justify going beyond the everyday-use baseline.

RAM is not the only cause of slow browsing
Google says insufficient system memory can slow Chrome’s main process. It also notes that poorly programmed web apps can increase renderer CPU use, so sluggish browsing is not necessarily a RAM problem. A slow connection or other system bottleneck can also affect how pages and online apps feel; a memory upgrade alone is not a guaranteed fix.
The available guidance does not establish a typical amount of RAM used by each tab, compare all browsers, or support a universal tab limit. If the computer slows down, consider what is running at the same time rather than assuming that browser-tab count alone explains it.

Check upgradeability before buying RAM
If you already own a computer with limited memory, check its exact model documentation before shopping for an upgrade. Some computers allow additional RAM; others have memory that cannot be upgraded. The cited Microsoft guidance does not establish compatibility for any particular PC.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm whether the memory is upgradeable and whether there is an available slot or other supported installation option.
- Check the model’s supported memory type and maximum capacity.
- Verify installation requirements before purchasing a kit; there is no universal laptop RAM kit that fits every computer.
Microsoft says adding memory may help with some device performance issues, but that is not a quantified benchmark or a guarantee that an upgrade will resolve a specific slowdown.
