To reduce Chrome’s memory use without closing every tab, turn on Memory Saver in More > Settings > Performance, then close or disable browser tasks you do not need. Memory Saver deactivates eligible inactive tabs; when you return to one, it reloads. This can ease memory pressure, but Google does not specify a guaranteed amount of RAM saved.
Turn on Chrome Memory Saver
- In Chrome, select More (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
- Open Performance.
- Turn on Memory Saver and choose a deactivation level.
Google describes the feature this way: “To save your computer’s memory and help active tabs run smoothly, Chrome deactivates tabs that you aren’t currently using.” An inactive tab is not permanently closed; opening it again reloads the page, so it may not be ready instantly.

If a site needs to stay active, go to Settings > Performance and add it under Always keep these sites active. Use the exception list only for pages where continued activity matters: excluded sites will not be deactivated by Memory Saver.

Some activity can already keep a tab from deactivation, including audio or video playback, calls, screen sharing, notifications, downloads, partially filled forms, pinned tabs, and connected devices. If a page does not deactivate, check for one of these conditions before changing the setting.
Close unnecessary tabs and extensions
Close tabs you are not using and disable or remove extensions you no longer need. Google notes, “The more tabs you have open, the harder Chrome has to work.” Extensions and background pages can also consume resources even when you are not looking at them. Google Chrome Help: Speed up Google Chrome.

Find the task using memory
- Open Chrome’s three-dot menu and choose More tools > Task Manager.
- Select the Memory column to sort tasks by memory use.
- Inspect high-use entries, including tabs, extensions, and background pages, and decide whether each is safe to stop.
- Select only a task you can afford to interrupt, then choose End process.
Ending a task can discard unsaved work on that page or extension. Save forms or other changes first, and do not end a task merely because it appears near the top of the list.
Review page preloading only if relevant
If pages still feel slow, decide whether Preload pages is useful for your browsing. Preloading is a speed feature, not a memory-measurement tool. Google says it can use cookies when allowed and may encrypt and send pages through Google; review the explanation in Chrome’s speed guidance before changing it.

Reduce memory pressure from other programs
Chrome is only one source of demand on a low-RAM PC. When practical, quit programs you are not using and pause downloads while troubleshooting. If Chrome reports memory trouble while loading a page, Google’s guidance is to close other tabs, quit other programs, pause downloads, and remove unneeded extensions before retrying. Sort Chrome Task Manager by memory while the slowdown is happening. If one tab, extension, or background page stands out, save any work, then close or disable that item and see whether the problem changes. Testing one item at a time makes it easier to identify the source than ending several processes at once.

On managed Windows installations, Google also recommends checking Windows Task Manager or another process manager and isolating the tabs or web apps involved.
