For a U.S. city, start by searching the Atlas of Surveillance for your city, county, state, and law-enforcement agency, then filter for drones. Treat any listing as a lead, not proof that the department operates drones now or a complete inventory. To learn what police may do with them, verify the program and read the agency’s current written policy alongside relevant local records and law.
How to check whether local police use drones
- Search the Atlas of Surveillance. Search by locality and agency, and filter for drones. The Atlas describes its database as open-source research on surveillance technology used by law enforcement in U.S. communities. Listings can be incomplete or out of date, so they do not establish current operational status. See the search page and Atlas overview.
- Note what the listing actually says. Record the agency name and any date, aircraft model, or linked source. A listing may indicate acquisition or reported use, but it does not by itself show whether the agency still operates the aircraft or what its policy permits.
- Verify with the agency. Check the police department’s official website for a drone, unmanned aircraft, or aviation policy. If the information is unclear, ask the department’s public-information officer whether it currently operates drones, owns them, borrows them, or receives support from another agency.
- Check government records. Look at city council and public-safety committee agendas, ordinances, budgets, procurement or grant records, and program or usage reports. These can help distinguish an approved or proposed purchase from an active program.
- Ask for missing documents. Contact the department or city clerk for the current policy, program approval, retention schedule, usage statistics or logs, data-sharing agreements, and audits. Follow the applicable state or local public-records process: access rules, exemptions, and response deadlines vary, and not every record is necessarily public.
What to look for in the written policy
Read the policy itself rather than assuming a database entry or news of an equipment purchase explains permitted use. Note its approval authority and revision date, and compare written rules with local ordinances, approvals, and any available reports of actual practice.

Permitted missions and who approves flights
Look for the purposes that authorize deployment and the threshold for a flight. Does the policy limit use to a call for service, an emergency, search and rescue, or a specified investigation? Who may approve a mission, and are approvals documented?

Where and what officers may observe
Look for limits on observing homes, private spaces, demonstrations, or people unrelated to an incident. Check whether the policy addresses sensors, zoom, or analytic capabilities, and whether it restricts collection beyond the stated mission.
Retention, access, and sharing
Find out what the department records, how long it keeps imagery, when it deletes it, who may access it, and whether it can share data with other agencies or outside parties. Check whether access and sharing are logged.

Oversight, reporting, and complaints
Look for audits, public reporting, city council review, a complaint channel, and consequences for policy violations. A written safeguard is not the same as evidence that it is followed; usage reports and audits can help show how the program is administered.
Equipment and weapons
Check whether the policy prohibits weaponization or limits payloads. The ACLU recommends clear, public drone policies, limits on use and image retention, public oversight, and no weapons. These are the ACLU’s advocacy recommendations, not a statement of uniform U.S. law. See ACLU: Domestic Drones.

Keep flight rules separate from surveillance rules
The FAA’s public-safety guidance concerns drone operations and aviation safety for public agencies. It can help with questions about applicable flight rules, but it does not determine what a particular city’s policy allows police to collect, retain, or share. For those questions, consult the local policy, applicable state law, and relevant constitutional rules. The FAA page was listed as last updated March 26, 2026; see FAA: Public Safety.

When comparing agencies, keep the same questions in view: permitted missions and deployment threshold; warrant and emergency provisions; observation and collection limits; retention, access, and sharing; oversight and public reporting; and the policy’s revision date and approval authority. Distinguish three separate facts: whether the agency has equipment, whether it currently operates it, and what its written policy permits.

If the policy or records do not answer a material question, ask the department or clerk for the specific document or record rather than relying on a general assurance. To assess your legal rights or a particular use, identify the city and state and consult current local law or qualified local legal help. A national database and FAA guidance cannot establish the full local answer.
