Choose capacity based on the workflows you run, how many execute at once, and observed memory and CPU use—not on an unsupported claim that one fixed VPS size is enough for everyone.
Why n8n does not have one universal VPS size
n8n’s documentation treats performance benchmarking, concurrency control, queue mode, execution data, binary data, and memory-related errors as separate scaling topics. That points to workload—not simply the fact that n8n is installed—as the basis for sizing. The documentation surfaced here does not provide a profile-by-profile RAM or vCPU recommendation or a numeric minimum. See the n8n documentation.

Consequently, a precise rule such as “n8n needs 2 GB of RAM and one vCPU” should not be presented as an official requirement. Such a figure would need a defined workload and deployment setup behind it to be useful.
What determines the resources your n8n VPS needs
Concurrent executions
Consider how many workflows may be running at the same time, especially during peak periods. Simultaneous executions can increase the load on an instance. n8n identifies concurrency control and queue mode as scaling topics, but the documentation available here does not give a hardware formula for a particular concurrency level.

Workflow memory profile
A lightweight workflow that mainly coordinates API calls may place different demands on a server than one that processes large payloads or binary files. n8n lists memory-related errors and binary data among its scaling concerns; the actual effect depends on what your workflows do.
Execution volume and stored data
Include the amount of execution activity and the data retained from executions in your planning. n8n treats execution data as a distinct scaling topic, so consider both the work the instance performs and the data your setup keeps.

Deployment architecture
A single n8n instance and a queue-mode arrangement with workers and supporting services are different architectures. Queue mode is one of the scaling topics identified by n8n, but the available documentation does not establish how much RAM or CPU each component needs. Do not assume that a sizing estimate for one arrangement applies to the other.

How to choose a VPS size without guessing
- Describe the workload. List the workflows you plan to run, note whether they handle large payloads or binary data, and estimate when several executions may overlap.
- Test representative work. Run the workflows that reflect your real use, including busy periods where possible. A test of only a quiet or unusually simple workflow is not a dependable basis for production sizing.
- Watch the instance under load. Monitor CPU use, memory use, concurrency, and execution behavior while the test runs. Treat this as practical sizing advice based on the scaling topics n8n documents, not as an n8n-published sizing formula.
- Adjust based on evidence. If measurements show resource pressure or execution problems, investigate the workload and configuration, then increase capacity or change the architecture as appropriate. Recheck under representative load rather than assuming a larger VPS will solve every kind of bottleneck.
Any specific starting size should be labeled as an estimate, not an n8n requirement, and tied to a clearly described workload, n8n version, database, and deployment architecture. The evidence available here does not support numeric recommendations for light, typical, or heavy use.

Does binary data change the VPS requirement?
Large binary data can affect storage choices. n8n’s external S3 storage feature stores binary data produced by workflow executions and can reduce reliance on the local filesystem for large data. It is a Self-hosted Enterprise feature that requires an Enterprise license key. n8n supports AWS S3; other S3-compatible services may work but are not officially supported. See n8n’s external storage documentation.
This is a storage option, not proof that S3 reduces CPU use or removes the need for adequate memory. Do not treat moving binary data off the local filesystem as a general fix for resource bottlenecks.

When Cloud may be a better fit than sizing a VPS
n8n lists npm, Docker, and Cloud among its ways to use or deploy the platform. With Cloud, n8n handles the infrastructure; self-hosting puts infrastructure responsibility on the operator and may suit privacy-focused use. If you prefer not to select and manage server capacity yourself, consider Cloud rather than trying to find a universal VPS size. See n8n’s deployment information.
