A Mac mini cluster uses the sum of the computers’ wall power plus every attached device on the same circuit. In Apple’s September 22, 2026 support table, listed configurations range from 4–7 W at idle to 50–145 W during Apple’s maximum workload tests per computer. Three M4 systems, for example, total about 12 W at idle or 195 W at the listed maximum before displays, networking, storage, or other equipment are added.
Those maximum readings are not normal all-day averages. To estimate electricity cost, use the cluster’s average watts, operating hours, and your local rate. To manage heat, add the computers’ published BTU/h figures, keep each unit within its model’s environmental limits, and arrange the cluster so exhaust air cannot recirculate into another computer.

Apple’s published Mac mini power figures
Apple measures these figures at the wall, including power-supply and system losses. You therefore do not need to add a power-supply efficiency correction. The configurations below are the exact systems Apple identified for testing; other memory or storage combinations can differ.

| Model and tested configuration | Idle | Maximum test | Idle heat | Maximum-test heat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mac mini M6, 16 GB unified memory, 256 GB SSD | 4 W | 70 W (Max) | 14 BTU/h | 239 BTU/h |
| Mac mini M5 Pro, 64 GB unified memory, 8 TB SSD | 6 W | 145 W (Max) | 20 BTU/h | 495 BTU/h |
| Mac mini (2024) M4, 16 GB, 256 GB | 4 W | 65 W (Max) | 14 BTU/h | 222 BTU/h |
| Mac mini (2024) M4 Pro, 64 GB, 8 TB | 5 W | 140 W (Max) | 17 BTU/h | 478 BTU/h |
| Mac mini (2023) M2, 24 GB, 2 TB | 7 W | 50 W (CPU Max) | 24 BTU/h | 171 BTU/h (CPU Max) |
| Mac mini (2023) M2 Pro, 32 GB, 8 TB | 7 W | 100 W (CPU Max) | 24 BTU/h | 358 BTU/h (CPU Max) |
Apple defines Idle as Finder open with default power-management settings. For the M6, M5 Pro and M4 entries, the table uses “Max”; the M2 entries use “CPU Max,” meaning a compute-intensive test application designed to maximize processor use and power consumption. Because the labels and test generations differ, treat the values as useful planning points rather than a perfectly controlled cross-generation benchmark.

How to calculate a cluster’s electrical load
Sum the computers first
For an approximate all-idle or all-maximum estimate, multiply the relevant per-computer figure by the number of identical units and add the results. This is arithmetic based on Apple’s individual tests, not a measurement of several machines operating together.
- Three listed M4 systems: 3 × 4 W = 12 W idle; 3 × 65 W = 195 W at the listed maximum.
- Four M4 Pro systems: 4 × 5 W = 20 W idle; 4 × 140 W = 560 W at the listed maximum.
- Two M5 Pro systems: 2 × 6 W = 12 W idle; 2 × 145 W = 290 W at the listed maximum.
For a mixed cluster, multiply each model separately and then add the subtotals. A group of two M4 Pro and four M4 computers would be about 26 W idle (2 × 5 plus 4 × 4) and 540 W at the listed maximum (2 × 140 plus 4 × 65).
Add everything powered from the same outlet
The Mac mini figures exclude equipment connected elsewhere in the setup. Include displays, USB hubs, external drives, network switches, routers, audio hardware, KVMs, chargers and any other device drawing from the same circuit. A display connected to a mini’s USB-C port may still draw its power from a different supply, so count it according to how the complete setup is actually powered.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the cluster shares a power strip or circuit, the safest planning number is the sum of the computers’ possible simultaneous draw plus the nameplate or measured draw of the accessories. Check the circuit and power-strip ratings for your region; the Apple table does not establish a safe limit for a particular building circuit.

Convert watts into energy and cost
Power is an instantaneous rate. Energy consumption over time is calculated as:
energy (kWh) = average watts × hours ÷ 1,000
Multiply the resulting kilowatt-hours by the electricity price on your bill to estimate cost. Use an average workload figure, not the maximum column, when estimating a month of operation. A maximum test is a stress condition; a server that spends most of its time waiting for jobs will consume far less energy than one running a sustained compute workload.
Worked examples
- Three M4 computers operating at their listed maximum for eight hours would be 195 W × 8 ÷ 1,000 = 1.56 kWh. The cost is 1.56 multiplied by your rate per kWh.
- The same three computers at their listed idle figure for 24 hours would be 12 W × 24 ÷ 1,000 = 0.288 kWh, before accessories.
- A mixed cluster of two M4 Pro and four M4 machines at the arithmetic maximum of 540 W for six hours would use 3.24 kWh. This describes a sustained assumption, not a measured result.
Real usage varies with screen state, storage activity, network traffic, background processes, thermal management and the application running. A plug-in wall-power monitor can measure the assembled setup at the outlet, including peripherals. Take readings during idle, normal work and the heaviest repeatable workload, and record the time interval so you can calculate an average rather than relying on a brief peak.
Translate electrical draw into room heat
Nearly all electrical power consumed by a computer eventually becomes heat in the room. Apple supplies a direct thermal reference in BTU per hour for each tested configuration, so you can add those figures in the same way as watts.

- Three M4 systems would represent about 42 BTU/h at the listed idle point and 666 BTU/h at the listed maximum.
- Two M4 Pro and four M4 systems would total about 90 BTU/h idle and 1,844 BTU/h at the listed maximum.
- Two M5 Pro systems would total about 40 BTU/h idle and 990 BTU/h at the listed maximum.
These totals cover the computers only. Displays, storage arrays, networking hardware and power supplies add their own heat. BTU/h is a scale for understanding the load, not a complete heating, ventilation and air-conditioning calculation: room size, insulation, sunlight, occupants, outdoor temperature and air exchange also matter. A sustained workload can make a small enclosed office noticeably warmer even when the cluster’s electrical demand looks modest.
Operating limits you should respect
Apple’s M4 specifications list an operating temperature of 10–35°C (50–95°F) and relative humidity of 5%–90%, non-condensing. The same M4 specification lists typical idle sound pressure of 5 dBA. Use the environmental limits for the exact generation you own; do not assume the M4 limits automatically apply to M2, M5 Pro or M6 systems.
For the M2 generation, Apple lists maximum continuous power of 150 W for M2 and 185 W for M2 Pro in the product specification. Those are product limits, not the measured typical draw in the power table. They should not be substituted for the 50 W and 100 W CPU Max test figures when estimating ordinary consumption.

Arrange a cluster for reliable cooling
Give every intake and exhaust path open air
Place each mini on a hard, stable surface with its ventilation openings unobstructed. Avoid pushing the rear of one unit directly against the intake area of another. Do not place several computers in a tightly enclosed box unless you have designed and verified forced ventilation; the cited Apple documents do not specify a rack layout, minimum spacing dimension or approved aftermarket cooler.

Prevent hot-air recirculation
Arrange rows so warm exhaust leaves the group instead of flowing back toward the front or sides of the same machines. Leave a clear route for room air to enter and heated air to leave. If a shelf or cabinet is unavoidable, measure temperatures at the intake side of the upper and lower units during the longest expected workload; a rising intake temperature indicates recirculation even if the room itself feels comfortable.
Control the room, not just the computers
Keep the room inside the applicable temperature and humidity range. Air conditioning or room ventilation must remove the combined heat from the cluster and the people and equipment already in the space. Portable fans can improve air mixing, but airflow alone does not remove heat from a closed room; the heat must ultimately be exhausted or carried away by cooling equipment.
Watch for signs of inadequate cooling
- Intake temperature climbs steadily during a sustained job.
- Performance falls as the workload continues, suggesting thermal management is reducing speed.
- Fans remain audibly high after the workload ends because the enclosure is retaining heat.
- Dust buildup blocks openings or raises temperatures compared with an otherwise identical unit.
When these symptoms appear, first separate the units, clear the airflow path and improve room ventilation. Then repeat the same workload and compare intake temperature, completion time and wall-power readings.

- Inventory the hardware. Record the model, memory and storage configuration of every mini, plus displays, storage, network devices and powered accessories.
- Choose planning cases. Calculate an idle subtotal and a simultaneous-maximum subtotal from Apple’s figures. Add the accessories’ measured or stated draw.
- Estimate energy. Select a realistic average wattage for the workload and apply the kWh formula for the number of operating hours.
- Estimate heat. Add Apple’s BTU/h values for the computers and account qualitatively for the rest of the equipment in the room.
- Check the environment. Confirm the room temperature and humidity stay within the exact model’s specification, using the M4 limits only for M4 systems.
- Measure the assembled cluster. Use a wall-power monitor at the supply point and log idle, normal and sustained-load readings. Do not treat a short spike as the daily average.
- Recheck after expansion. Adding a mini, external SSD, display or network appliance changes both electrical demand and heat. Recalculate the totals instead of assuming the original airflow remains adequate.
Common planning mistakes
Using the maximum as a permanent average
The maximum or CPU Max number is a defined Apple test condition. It is useful for worst-case circuit and heat planning, but it will overstate energy if the workload spends substantial time idle or waiting on input and output.

Counting only the computers
A cluster can have low computer draw and still create a larger load once displays, storage and networking are included. Measure at the wall when you need the complete setup’s number.
Confusing product limits with measured consumption
The M2 specification’s 150 W and 185 W maximum continuous power values describe limits for those products. They are not replacements for Apple’s 50 W and 100 W CPU Max measurements.
Assuming a rack or cabinet is automatically safe
Apple’s published pages do not validate a particular enclosure or fan arrangement. Treat any cabinet as a thermal design problem: provide an intake and exhaust path, prevent recirculation and verify temperatures under the intended sustained workload.
What to put in a cluster plan
Before buying or deploying additional machines, write down the exact model/configuration, idle watts, maximum-test watts, corresponding BTU/h, expected workload, operating hours and attached equipment. Keep the measured wall average beside the calculated estimate. This makes it clear which figures come from Apple’s test conditions and which describe your own environment, and it gives you a repeatable baseline when the cluster grows.
