Best Steam Deck Remote Play Apps for PlayStation and Xbox (2026 Guide)

For PlayStation console streaming, start with chiaki-ng. It is the current next-generation Chiaki project associated with the Steam Deck-focused Chiaki4Deck work and documents PS4, PS5 and Steam Deck controller support. For streaming from an Xbox console at home, use Greenlight as the leading evidenced option. For Xbox Cloud Gaming, follow Microsoft’s separate Microsoft Edge setup for Steam Deck. Asobi: Remote Play is available on Steam, but its Steam Deck compatibility is currently listed as unknown, so treat it as experimental rather than a dependable recommendation.

These choices depend on what you are streaming. Remote Play sends video from a console you own. Xbox Cloud Gaming runs eligible titles on Microsoft’s servers, while Steam Remote Play streams a game running on another computer. None of the available sources establishes a universal winner for latency, bitrate or image quality.

Stream a PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 you own chiaki-ng Open-source PS4/PS5 client with Steam Deck controller guidance, including touch controls and gyro It is a third-party client; Sony does not list Steam Deck or SteamOS among the devices on its PS Remote Play page
Stream an Xbox One or Xbox Series console at home Greenlight Open-source client for Xbox home streaming with Linux and Steam Deck support, gamepad controls and a friends list The project reports some bugs and side effects on Steam Deck and is not affiliated with Microsoft or Xbox
Play eligible Xbox titles from the cloud Microsoft Edge on Steam Deck Microsoft publishes a Steam Deck setup for Xbox Cloud Gaming Microsoft says the Edge Flatpak is not actively maintained and Edge is not officially supported on SteamOS

What “remote play” means on a Steam Deck

The phrase covers several different services. Choosing the wrong category is the fastest way to install the wrong software.

PlayStation or Xbox console remote play

Your PS4, PS5, Xbox One or Xbox Series console runs the game. The Deck receives the console’s video and sends controller input back over the network. You must own or have access to the console, and the console must be available to accept a remote connection.

Xbox Cloud Gaming

Cloud Gaming is not a connection to your home Xbox. Eligible games run in Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure and are displayed in a browser. The Microsoft Edge route therefore belongs in a separate category from Greenlight’s Xbox home-streaming function.

Steam Remote Play

Valve’s Steam Remote Play streams a game running on another computer to a connected device. It is useful for a gaming PC and Deck, but it is not a PlayStation or Xbox console client and does not replace chiaki-ng or Greenlight.

PlayStation on Steam Deck: chiaki-ng

chiaki-ng describes itself as the next-generation open-source PlayStation remote-play client. Its project documentation states compatibility with PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on supported operating systems and includes Steam Deck-specific controller guidance. It is the most directly evidenced Deck-oriented PlayStation option in this comparison.

Why it is the default PlayStation choice

  • It targets both PS4 and PS5 remote play.
  • Its controller documentation addresses Steam Deck layouts rather than assuming a generic desktop gamepad.
  • It documents touch controls and gyro input.
  • It documents DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers, where the connected setup supports those features.
  • It is open source, allowing users to inspect the project and follow its release documentation.

These are feature and compatibility claims, not a laboratory performance result. The cited material does not establish that chiaki-ng has lower latency or better image quality than every alternative.

How to set up chiaki-ng

  1. Confirm the console side first. Enable Remote Play on the PS4 or PS5 and make sure the console can be reached on the network you intend to use. The exact menu names can vary by console software version, so use the current PlayStation instructions shown on your console.
  2. Install the current chiaki-ng build using its Steam Deck instructions. Use the project’s current release and Steam Deck setup documentation rather than an old Chiaki4Deck guide copied elsewhere. Project packaging and launch steps can change.
  3. Launch the client in Desktop Mode initially. This makes account and controller configuration easier to inspect before you add the program to Steam or use a gaming-mode shortcut.
  4. Register the console through the app’s on-screen flow. The client will present the registration information it needs. Keep the PlayStation account and console available while completing that process; do not paste credentials into unofficial forms or scripts.
  5. Choose a Deck control layout. Test the sticks, triggers, touch controls and any gyro mapping in a non-critical game. If you use a DualSense, verify whether haptics and adaptive triggers are available in your chosen connection mode rather than assuming every feature is transported.
  6. Move the shortcut to your normal play mode. After a successful test in Desktop Mode, add the client to Steam or use the launch method described by the project so it is easy to start from Gaming Mode.

The project is not endorsed or certified by Sony. Sony’s own PS Remote Play documentation says the service works with PS4 and PS5 and requires a compatible device and the free app, but its published device list names mobile devices, Windows, Mac and selected Android TV devices—not SteamOS or Steam Deck. Installing chiaki-ng therefore means using an independent client, not an officially supported Sony Deck application.

PlayStation setup problems to check first

  • The console is not discovered: confirm both devices are on the intended network and that Remote Play is enabled on the console. Discovery and registration are separate steps.
  • Controls feel wrong: return to the Deck layout documented by chiaki-ng and check whether a game is expecting a PlayStation button arrangement or a standard XInput layout.
  • Video works but input does not: test the project’s documented controller profile before changing network settings. A stream can be healthy while the selected layout sends unusable buttons.
  • Features differ from a DualSense connected directly to the console: haptics and adaptive triggers depend on the client, game and connection path. Treat them as supported capabilities, not a guarantee for every title.

Xbox console streaming: Greenlight

Greenlight describes itself as an open-source client for xCloud and Xbox home streaming. Its repository states that it runs on Linux, macOS, Windows and Steam Deck, and lists Xbox One and Xbox Series video and audio streaming, gamepad controls and a built-in friends list.

What Greenlight is best suited for

Choose Greenlight when the Xbox you want to play is in your home and you want the Deck to act as the screen and controller. It is the closest match in this source set to the question, “What program should I use on Steam Deck for Xbox’s equivalent of PlayStation Remote Play?” It is not evidence that Greenlight is the only possible client; it is the clearly documented option here.

Greenlight setup workflow

  1. Prepare the Xbox. Enable the console’s remote features and verify that the account you intend to use can sign in. Keep the console powered or configured for the standby behavior required by its current software.
  2. Install the Steam Deck build described by Greenlight. Use the project’s current Linux or Steam Deck package and its own release notes. Do not assume that an older package has the same login or controller behavior.
  3. Sign in through the client. Complete the account flow presented by Greenlight, then select the home-streaming function rather than a cloud-only option when both are shown.
  4. Pair or select the Xbox. If more than one console is available, identify the intended Xbox before starting a session. The first connection is the right time to confirm that video and audio are coming from the home console.
  5. Check gamepad mapping. Use the Deck controls in a menu and a game with low stakes. Confirm the guide, menu, view and shoulder buttons before starting a long session.
  6. Test from Gaming Mode. The project says the Deck build has been reported to work with some small bugs and side effects. A short Gaming Mode test can reveal launch, focus or overlay behavior that is not visible in Desktop Mode.

Greenlight’s documentation is explicit about its status: it is not affiliated with Microsoft or Xbox. That matters for account expectations, support and troubleshooting. A working client does not turn into an official Xbox application, and Microsoft’s support team may not be able to diagnose a Greenlight-specific problem.

Greenlight caveats

  • The project reports some bugs and side effects on Steam Deck, so expect occasional rough edges rather than a guaranteed flawless setup.
  • The available sources document features and platform support, not a controlled comparison against another Xbox client.
  • Do not confuse its xCloud capability with Microsoft’s supported Edge route; Greenlight can expose more than one streaming mode, and the mode you choose determines whether you are using a home console or a cloud service.

Xbox Cloud Gaming: Microsoft Edge is a different route

Microsoft publishes instructions for setting up Xbox Cloud Gaming in Microsoft Edge on Steam Deck. This is the appropriate path when you want eligible cloud titles without streaming from an Xbox console in your home.

What the Edge method does

You open the Xbox Cloud Gaming service in Edge, sign in with the required Microsoft account and play titles available to that service. The Deck is acting as a browser client; your home Xbox is not the source of the video.

Practical setup sequence

  1. Switch to Desktop Mode so you can install and configure the browser using Microsoft’s current Steam Deck instructions.
  2. Install or launch the Edge Flatpak exactly as described in that guide. Package names and permission prompts can change, so follow the current page rather than an archived command.
  3. Sign in to the cloud service and confirm that your account and subscription meet the service’s current requirements. Availability of individual games and plans can change.
  4. Configure controls and display behavior in the browser session, then test one title before creating a Gaming Mode shortcut.
  5. Keep expectations realistic about support. Microsoft says it does not actively maintain the Edge Flatpak and does not officially support Edge on SteamOS. Browser updates or SteamOS changes can therefore require local troubleshooting.

This route should not be described as Xbox Remote Play from your own console. If your goal is to wake and stream an Xbox One or Series console, use a home-streaming client such as Greenlight instead.

Asobi: Remote Play and the current Steam listing

Asobi: Remote Play is now listed on Steam with an October 9, 2026 release date and a free-to-play listing. Steam currently marks its Steam Deck compatibility as unknown. That status is the decisive fact for a Deck buying or installation decision: the app may be interesting, but compatibility is not established.

An August 12, 2026 report discussed an earlier pre-release test and made claims about PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming and video modes. Because the Steam listing changed after that report, those pre-release details should not be treated as current features without checking the live listing or the developer’s current documentation.

When it is reasonable to try

  • You are comfortable troubleshooting an app whose Deck rating is unknown.
  • You can use Steam’s current listing and the developer’s documentation to verify requirements before signing in.
  • You have a fallback client—chiaki-ng for a PS4 or PS5—if the experiment fails.

It is not the right first recommendation for someone who wants a known PlayStation console-streaming workflow today.

Network requirements and what they do—and do not—tell you

Sony’s current PS Remote Play guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. Those are product guidelines, not a performance guarantee. Sony also notes that results vary with the network environment and the game.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
  • Bandwidth is only one variable: congestion, wireless interference, distance from the access point and upload capacity can affect responsiveness.
  • Measure the path you will actually use: a Deck next to a console on the same home network is a different situation from a Deck connecting over the internet.
  • Do not infer Xbox thresholds: the cited Greenlight and Edge material does not provide a matching named minimum or recommended speed, so no equivalent number is stated here.
  • Ethernet is optional: the available guidance does not require a USB-C Ethernet adapter or identify a particular accessory as tested. A wired docked setup may be useful in your environment, but it is not a prerequisite established by these sources.

Controller and usability differences

chiaki-ng Steam Deck layouts, touch controls, gyro, DualSense haptics and adaptive-trigger documentation Whether each feature works in your game and connection mode
Greenlight Gamepad controls listed for Xbox streaming Button mapping, guide/menu behavior and any Steam Deck bugs reported by the project

Troubleshooting by symptom

Black screen or immediate disconnect

First establish which mode you launched. A home-console client requires the console to be configured and reachable; Edge Cloud Gaming requires a working browser session and service sign-in. Recheck the console’s remote settings or the browser account before changing Deck graphics settings.

Playable video with delayed controls

Check wireless congestion and whether another device is saturating the connection. Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation apply to PS Remote Play guidance, but neither number guarantees low latency. Test close to the access point and compare the same game at a different time of day.

Wrong buttons or missing menu controls

Reapply the client-specific layout. chiaki-ng’s Deck guidance is the relevant reference for PlayStation; Greenlight’s gamepad mapping is the relevant reference for Xbox. Browser sessions may also lose focus, so click the game area before concluding that the controller is unsupported.

Login or account concerns

Use only the sign-in flow shown by the current project or Microsoft page. Remember that chiaki-ng and Greenlight are independent clients, and Greenlight explicitly says it is not affiliated with Microsoft or Xbox. If a project requests credentials through an unexpected script or page, stop and verify the source.

How to choose in under a minute

  1. Own a PS4 or PS5 and want that console’s games? Choose chiaki-ng first.
  2. Own an Xbox One or Series and want to stream it from home? Choose Greenlight, accepting its reported Steam Deck bugs and third-party status.
  3. Want cloud access rather than your own console? Use Microsoft’s Edge instructions for Xbox Cloud Gaming.
  4. Want to experiment with a new PlayStation app? Consider Asobi only after checking its live Steam Deck status and current requirements.
  5. Looking for a performance champion? The available evidence cannot identify one. Select by console, streaming mode, controller needs and tolerance for third-party software instead.

Bottom line

chiaki-ng is the strongest documented starting point for PlayStation remote play on a Steam Deck. Greenlight is the clearest documented choice for Xbox home-console streaming, while Microsoft Edge is the separate browser solution for Xbox Cloud Gaming. Asobi: Remote Play remains an experimental option because Steam lists Deck compatibility as unknown. Keep the distinction between official platform support and independent clients in view, and treat network figures as guidance rather than a promise of perfect play.
