Choose a portable SSD by adding up the files you need to carry, allowing room for new ones and for active work—not by assuming a certain capacity suits everyone. 1TB can fit a smaller, defined working set; 2TB offers more room for a broader set of files or expected growth; and 4TB suits a larger active library or archive when the added capacity is useful. These are practical starting points, not universal thresholds.
How to choose between 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB
Start with the drive’s job. A portable SSD used to move a few projects between devices has a different capacity requirement from one holding a growing creative library or a backup. Estimate the size of the files you plan to store, add room for growth and working space, then compare that total with the capacity you can afford and your devices support.

| Capacity | Practical fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 1TB | A smaller working set, file transfer, or more limited library. | Current file sizes, usable space after formatting, and whether growth will soon mean adding another drive. |
| 2TB | A broader working set or room for anticipated growth. | Whether the drive is for active files, a backup, or both; those roles can call for different capacity. |
| 4TB | A larger active library or archive when you can make use of the extra space. | Device compatibility, budget, and whether a portable SSD is the right medium for a large archive. |
Samsung lists its T7 portable SSD family in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities, making it one product example across these sizes. Availability and compatibility should be checked for the specific model and device. Samsung T7 product information explains that 1GB and 1TB use decimal byte definitions, so a computer using a different measurement standard may display less capacity.

Estimate the storage your files require
Make an inventory of what will live on the drive, rather than relying on broad labels such as “photography” or “video.” Note the current size of projects, folders, or libraries you plan to carry. Then consider how often you add files and how much room you need to keep working without immediately moving or deleting material.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
- For active work: Count current projects and the working files you need alongside them.
- For transfer: Estimate the largest set of files you expect to carry at once, not necessarily your entire collection.
- For backup: Decide what data is included and whether the backup is one copy among several. A portable SSD should not be the only copy of important data.
Samsung’s US buying guide estimates that one hour of 100Mbps 4K video is approximately 45GB. That is Samsung’s planning estimate for that bitrate, not a universal rule for 4K footage; recording settings and other factors change file sizes. Samsung also cautions that the number of images stored varies with camera settings, image quality, and other factors. Samsung’s buying guide frames capacity around use cases such as creative work and everyday storage.
Storage charts can help translate a capacity into approximate amounts of media, but their figures depend on stated assumptions. Kingston notes that formatting and other functions consume some of a storage device’s listed capacity. Treat such estimates as guides, not promises about exactly how many files a drive will hold. Kingston’s storage chart provides approximate figures with that qualification.

Separate working storage from backup and archive needs
A drive for active projects needs enough room for the files currently in use and any additional working space your workflow requires. A backup drive is sized against the data being backed up and the backup approach; keeping multiple versions or a growing archive can change the amount needed. If one SSD is expected to serve both purposes, account for both uses rather than counting the same free space twice.

Dell gives the example that a computer with a 1TB internal drive will generally benefit from a backup drive of 2TB or more. It also notes that large photo, video, or creative archives may require substantially more. This is guidance for that example, not a universal backup formula: the right size depends on what is backed up and how the backup is maintained. Dell also recommends weighing capacity alongside portability, speed, power, compatibility, and security. Dell’s external backup guidance discusses those considerations.

Check usable capacity and device compatibility
The capacity printed on a drive is not always the number a computer displays as available. Measurement standards can differ, and formatting and device functions use some space. Plan against the displayed capacity on your setup where possible, and leave room rather than filling the drive to its limit.
Before buying, confirm that the exact SSD model works with the computer, phone, camera, or gaming console you intend to connect. Check the connection and speed requirements for your workflow as well as capacity; a larger drive does not by itself guarantee that a device or task will work as expected. Samsung lists portable SSD use across PCs, phones, cameras, and gaming consoles, but compatibility is model- and device-dependent. Samsung support information covers T7 capacity and compatible device categories.

Use 1TB, 2TB, or 4TB as a starting point
- Consider 1TB if the files you need to carry form a relatively small, clearly bounded set and you do not expect it to grow quickly.
- Consider 2TB if your working set is broader, you expect growth, or you need more headroom. For a computer with a 1TB internal drive, Dell’s 2TB-or-more backup example may be a useful point of comparison, not a rule.
- Consider 4TB if you need to keep a larger active library or archive together and have confirmed the device fit and cost make sense.
There is no established universal cutoff assigning a particular capacity to photographers, students, travelers, or video creators. The workload and the size of the files—not the job title—determine what is useful. Compare current prices when shopping, since comparable retail pricing and current model availability are not established here.
