Although the title request says October, no October ranking was located, and the list has not been verified against later builds. Use it as a dated guide to which characters may be worth upgrading—not as an official or confirmed October balance ranking.
How current is this tier list?
Pocket Gamer’s guide is an editorial meta snapshot, not a ranking published by the game’s developer, GOODROID, Inc. The guide is explicitly for version 1.26.0 and was updated September 16, 2026. Apple’s listing includes later versions 1.27.0 and 1.27.1, described as bug-fix updates; that does not establish whether character balance or the roster changed. The September rankings therefore should not be presented as independently checked for those builds.

What makes the highest-ranked units useful?
A tier alone does not tell you whether a character fits your team. Pocket Gamer’s explanations point to damage, tanking, debuffs and control, and healing or buffs as separate reasons to value units. Match those strengths to the mode and job your lineup needs.
Damage dealers and control
Jellal is described as a primary damage dealer with crowd control. First Dream Laxus is another primary damage option, emphasizing single-target damage while also dealing area damage. For S-tier teams, the guide also describes Natsu (Dragon F.) and Laxus Dreyar as powerful damage dealers. Gray Fullbuster and Holy Night Juvia are identified as debuff or control choices.

Tanking and sustain
Erza Heaven-W is named as the best tank. Irene and Wendy Marvell are highlighted for debuffs and sustain, including healing and buffs. These roles can matter more to a team than choosing another damage dealer when survival or support is the missing piece.
PvP versus PvE
The guide specifically warns that Satan Mirajane, Mavis, Bunny Lucy and Cyber Rogue are PvP meta units whose performance falls off in PvE. Their S+ placement should not be read as a promise that they are equally strong in every mode. For S-tier choices, the guide characterizes Lucy Leo Form and Mirajane as offering sustained damage plus utility, while S-tier units more broadly can fill control, utility, single-target burst, or damage-and-disruption roles.

Which units are worth upgrading?
Pocket Gamer frames its list partly as a way to help players—especially free-to-play players—avoid spending scarce upgrade materials on weaker units. Shards are one example of those resources. Use the ranking as a starting point, then prioritize a character whose role addresses a real team need and whose strengths match the mode you play.
